Sam and I did a shortened version of this hike. We parked at the Boat Launch Trailhead and hiked 345 to 352. We went right on 352 to its junction with 348, then left of 348 to 347. We went right on 347 to its terminus with 346 and turned right. We followed 346 to the Cayuse TH and picked up 351 on the other side of it. We took 351 to its junction with 345, turning right on 345 back to the trailhead.

Nice hike. Comfortable temperatures, little brooks flowing from the recent rains and no dust. The forest had "greened up" from the monsoon rains.

Sam and I did a loop on 315, 317, 318, 367 & 326 with a .5 mile in and out on 316 to make it a 5 mile day. 315 seemed to be reconfigured to avoid some eroded areas but generally follows the old trail. Quite a few people out on the trails but the parking lot was only half full.

Sam and I did the loop counter clockwise skipping the tail as I have a sore foot. There were hikers, bikers and horse people using the trail this day. While not hiking very fast, we still beat a horse around the loop going in the opposite direction, unless she took a side trip which I doubt. Some cloud cover kept the temps cool.

Sam & I did this as a pre-July 4 hike. I hadn't hiked the loop in 5 years in much colder weather. Great views. There were a couple of hang gliders in the air at the summit enjoying the day as well. Lunch was at the Haunted Hamburger in Jerome which was worth the trip.

Sam & I did a loop on the Watershed, Seven Mile Gulch and Ranch Trail Extension. I wanted to get a track of the new segment of the Ranch Trail now that it is completed. The new trail is a nice single track with good views of Granite Mountain, Prescott, and Goldwater Lake. I posted the track for the new trail under Ranch Trail #62 Extension.

Sam and I did this as an out and back from Williamson Valley Road. We had hiked the Embry Riddle - Jan Alfano segment of the Prescott Circle trail two weeks ago (for which I forgot to post a trip log) and had turned around at the top of a hill. We hiked to that point and back on this hike. I marked junctions and turns on my GPS so I could write a description and joined the track with the one from the previous hike so I'd have a complete track. With this Sam and I have completed the Prescott Circle Trail as described in YTA guide. There's one new section which is an extension of the Ranch Trail #62 which we tried last fall but it wasn't completed at that time. From reading the 6/14 trip log written by The Eagle this extension should be complete now and we plan to hike it next week.

I'll coordinate my list of PCT hikes with Joe so that the mapped area is complete as I believe there are descriptions and tracks for the entire loop less the two gaps without trails at this time.

Sam and I did this to continue our hike of the Prescott Circle Trail (PCT) which we began last year. About half of this hike is the PCT, with the rest forming a loop and providing more interesting hiking than the PCT portion. The PCT follows the south and west segments of this loop trail and is close to busy roads. The north and east parts are away from the road, are more hilly, and are more interesting.

This was the backpack part of Tom's and my trip to hike passages 11 & 12 of the AZT. We began at the Marshal Gulch trailhead avoiding the road walk through Summerhaven. This first part of the hike was very slow. There were lots of rocks and trees on the trail not allowing us to maintain any kind of pace. There was a bit of up and down as well. The decent to Romero Pass was long and slow as well. That completed passage 12 and started passage 11 for our southbound trip.

From the pass to our planned campsite at Hutch's Pool was good trail where we could stretch our legs some. As with our hike the day before the views were great descending to Romero Pass. For the rest of the backpack we were looking up at canyon walls which were spectacular.

Hutch's Pool had plenty of water and was a nice (but sandy) place to camp. We did see a more open area where some people were camping about .8 miles south of Hutch's Pool but there was no water there. The hike out on the second day had two climbs but they were expected and the trail was good so we were out at 10:15 having started at 6:30am. After more car shuttling it was home to Phoenix.

Tom & I completed AZT passages 11 & 12 over three days. We rented a cabin in Willow Canyon about 8 miles south of Summerhaven and used that as a base for the first two nights, then backpacked the last two days.

For this day hike we started at the Oracle Ridge trailhead on the Control Road, FR38, and ended at the American Flag trailhead where we spotted our other car. This was a long, slow hike for a fair amount of climbing for a "downhill" hike. The views were terrific and the temperature was comfortable. My GPS's calculated aeg was more than I expected and more than Garmin's Basecamp showed after I uploaded the track. It felt like the former but was probably the latter.

We returned to the cabin by driving around the mountain rather than taking FR38 to the top which was the shortest distance but probably no faster. Neither of us had driven that unpaved road so we didn't know what to expect. Tom planned on driving down FR38 at the end of the trip to check it out and avoid holiday traffic on I-10.

Tom & I planned to do the canyon but the road in was pretty rough during the first .5 mile, so I parked and we walked 3 miles to the trailhead and about 2 miles on the trail and returned to the car. There were a lot of people walking on the road; few attempted to drive to the various trailheads which FR152 allowed access to. Nice cool weather for a hike.

Tom & I hiked Passage 20 on an overnight backpack. We hiked south from the Pigeon Spring TH to Vineyard TH which is the "easier" direction with less accumulated elevation gain (aeg). We left the trailhead at about 12:30 pm and found a place to camp at 4:30 after 7.78 miles. There were few camping spots as most of this part of the passage was on the side of the mountain with no flat spots. We camped on a saddle where I was able to set up my tent. Tom had difficulty finding a place for his hammock as he didn't want to string it across the trail as it appears game used the trail at night. He was able to put it up between two small trees but with the wind at night he was touching the ground by morning.

Because there was no water anywhere near where we were camping we carried all we needed. We lessened the water load by skipping the freeze dried dinner and oatmeal and coffee breakfast. We didn't carry stoves or water filters to keep our pack light to make up for the extra water. The second day was longer, 11.95 miles with less elevation gain. However, I was dragging. I think the lack of a filling dinner contributed to that as I've been taking long hikes with Tom for conditioning leading up to this trip. Lesson learned!

The published and measured elevation gains varied widely. According to the Arizona Trail Guide the total accent in the north to south direction is 3,645'. The HikeAZ track for this pass shows 4,692 when loaded into Garmin Basecamp. The ATA official track shows 2,658' in Basecamp. My track shows 3,002' on the GPS itself and 2,741' in Basecamp. My expectation was for a more difficult hike but I'm glad there wasn't as much climbing as I had expected.

The passage is beautiful with Roosevelt Lake on one side and Four Peaks on the other. The temperatures when we did this were good; 75 high and 50 low at night. I hated the road to Pigeon Spring TH which is El Oso Rd (FR143). It is narrow with exposure with a high crown in the middle. Fortunately I didn't meet any vehicles traveling in the other direction when retrieving Tom's truck at the end of the hike. The hamburger in Punkin Center was welcome but I almost couldn't finish it because I was so tired.

Tom & I planned to do the Wilson Mtn Trail #10 today, but found the trailhead closed for construction when we got there. We travelled north to the Ensinoso Picnic area and used the North Wilson Trail to reach trail #10. This was a really nice hike with quite a bit of climbing. There were a lot of blowdowns on the Wilson Mtn trail near the saddle which made for slow going. The view from the top (Sedona Overlook) was impressive. The view of the wall & Oak Creek Canyon on the way down trail #123 was great as well as the early afternoon sun cast shadows which gave depth to the crags. Temps were pleasant as well.

Tom & I wanted to get a couple more AZT passages done and decided to give 3 and 4 a try as long (for us) day hikes staying in Patagonia rather than backpacking and camping. We had great weather, cool in the morning and warming in the afternoon. The scenery was great until we were too tired to appreciate it. I thought I was in decent shape, but these two hikes proved I have a ways to go in order to complete the remaining passages.

For passage 3 we spotted a car at the Harshaw Road trailhead outside of Patagonia and drove to our starting point at Canelo Pass using AZ82 and AZ83 and FR799. While this is not the way the AZT guide says to go and not the way my car's GPS indicated, the cook where we had dinner the night before said it was mostly paved and would be easier on the cars. It worked out OK. This avoided the road walk into Patagonia. It ended up being 14.2 mies and 1,526' aeg.

For passage 4 we spotted a car at the Temporal Gulch trailhead 7 miles up FR72 and drove to our starting point on Gardner Canyon Rd. For both hikes we chose the direction with the lowest aeg. We considered spotting the car at Walker Basin trailhead to save an extra 6 miles but an AZ Republic article from 2009 scared me away from that. As it turned out, it would have been doable but slow. The day ended up being 16.2 miles and 1,942' aeg.

There was plenty of water at Red Bank Well and Cott Tank enclosure on passage 3 and at numerous spots along the north section of passage 4 in a small stream probably starting at Bear Spring.

water 1 out of 5water 2 out of 5water 3 out of 5water 4 out of 5 Red Bank Well 76-100% full 76-100% full

Tom and I did the loop without the side trip on the Terrapin Trail. It was a hot day; we only saw one other hiker on this loop. There were lots of others at the trailhead doing other hikes, I assume. Saw a gila monster on the saddle at the 4.5 mile mark but I couldn't get my camera ready in time to take its picture before it hid under a thick bush. We didn't poke at it to coax it out. The trail #235 is really a pretty hike through the canyon. Lots of interesting rock formations. This was a enjoyable hike.

I hiked this with Tom for more conditioning and because I hadn't done it in 4 years. The trail outside of Spur Cross is in rough shape; lots of erosion, loose gravel and rocks to slow you down. I, being older than Tom, took my time getting to the top but was rewarded by the great view. Even though the majority of the climbing was getting to the summit, there was still 800' aeg on the return trip. Cave Creek was flowing even though there hasn't been much precipitation since December. We ate a late lunch in Cave Creek planning upcoming hikes and I relaxed the rest of the day.

Sam & I hiked north on the BCT to the river crossing and back. We didn't want to get our feet wet as there was no dry crossing that we could find. We did find a crossing to the south but that led south toward the area where the trail crosses the river if you're going southbound which was not our objective.
