Sam & I did an out and back to the summit using the shortest leg. Sam preferred the shorter hike to the loop. Plus it rained the whole way. Saw 45 other hikers, 1 biker and 1 bow hunter. A number of the hikers were a school group from Casa Grande. Even though there were no views and we were wet, it was a nice hike. Given the cool temperatures I never drank any of my water.

Sam and I did a loop beginning at the Gaddis Canyon Trail (#110) trailhead. We hiked FR104B, 104 & 104A to the Coleman Trail. We hiked the Coleman to FR413 and then FR413 to the Gaddis Canyon Two (9037) trail. We hiked this to the Gaddis Canyon Trial (#110) and then back to the car. This was a little more strenuous than what we've been doing, so we were a little slow. Hopefully we can do some more harder hikes to get in better shape.

Sam & I did both the Cold Spring and Garden Grove trails with a 15 minute drive on an unpaved road to connect the trailheads in order to add to the segments of the Prescott Circle Trail that we have done.

For the Cold Spring trail we hiked out and back from the Aspen Creek Trailhead to the junction with the Potts Creek Trail (#327). This is a nice single track with good views and lots of shade. The aeg was 128' northbound and 292' southbound.

To get to the next trail we drove west on Copper Basin Rd to Thumb Butte Loop road. While the latter road is not maintained it was in decent shape. There is a great viewpoint to the west along this road. We parked in a parking area at the intersection of Thumb Butte Road and Camp Willow Springs Rd.

To hike the Garden Grove Trail from the parking area we hiked Trail 318 (across Camp Will Springs Rd from the parking) north to 332. We followed this right to Thumb Butte Road and the Garden Grove Trail (#392) on the other side. This trail is flat during the first part and then climbs to its junction with #326 and #322. We hiked back until we neared the road. There was an unofficial trail on the left marked by a cairn. We thought this might be a shortcut to the road, which we planned to use to return to our car. This unmarked trail actually turned out to be a great side trip. It roughly paralleled the road until it reached the road right at the south end of the parking area.

It was a good day for hiking, but we had to hurry back to Phoenix because I had movie and dinner date with my wife and daughter.

Sam & I did a short hike on the Circle Trail (#332) in order to connect where we left off last week to a section of this trail we did 2 months ago. We hiked from the #332 TH on Iron Springs Rd north to Granite Basin Rd and back. This was an easy hike. The trail dipped during the first .6 miles then gradually climbed for 1.4 miles to the turnaround point. There were no other hikers but we saw 3 bikers on the trail.

Sam & I did this as well as parts of other trails to complete this NW segment of the Prescott Trail. We started at a small trailhead at the end of Katahn Rd. We first hiked on the Willow Trail #347. At .62 miles the Ho-Kay-Gan Trail #341 went right. At 1.42 miles we passed under some power lines and at 2.05 came to a junction with #347 again. We continued straight on #347. In about .1 miles we came to a junction with #346 the Willow Connector. We followed that through a gate and immediately turned left onto the Javalina (Circle) Trail #332. We followed this to Granite Basin Road where we turned around. On the way back we turned right at the junction of #347 and #341 about .1-.2 miles past the gate and took the "short cut" back to the trailhead. There were some nice views of Granite Mountain and Thumb Butte on the hike and the weather was great.

Hiked the Potts Creek Trail out and back with Sam both to make progress on the Prescott Circle Trail and to gather data in order to write a description of the trail for HAZ. Its a nice hike entirely in the pines. The weather was threatening during the hike. When it started to sprinkle I put on my poncho and it abruptly stopped and we stayed dry. Putting on rain gear seems to be a good way to prevent rain. We saw a number of mountain bikers but no hikers on the trail.

Sam & I did hiked the Turley Trail and the Boy Scout Trail to the Ranch Trail and back. I took notes along the way in order to post a description which slowed us down. It sprinkled on us a little as we finished and was overcast for the most part keeping the temperatures moderate. We are planning on hiking segments of the Prescott Circle Trail each week that we haven't hiked previously so we should complete the existing parts this year.

Sam & I did this after we found that the trail we planned on hiking was closed due to the Doce Fire. It was very interesting hiking through the Dells but the hot weather slowed us down. We started at the Sundog Ranch trailhead which added about .4 miles to the loop.

Did this from the Aspen Creek Trailhead to the junction with the new Wolverton Mtn Trail #9415 and the old trail, now called 9415A, which goes down to White Spar and back. I took notes and plan to do the other part of #9415 and post the description of the entire Wolverton Mountain Trail (#9415) on HikeAZ later this summer. The trail has been rerouted as it nears White Spar and the new trail, adding a switchback.

Hiked this trail in order to create a single track for it and to take notes for posting a description. My wife dropped me off on Dove Valley Road next to the new trail head construction area and I bushwhacked (easy) to the beginning of the trail - about .5 miles. It was overcast so wasn't to warm. There were a lot of trail users this Memorial Day. I counted 1 jogger, 4 horse people, 15 hikers going in the opposite direction to me and numerous mountain bikers.

Sam & I hiked this trail out & back from Iron Springs Road to Thumb Butte Road. It began with a very gradual downgrade on the old SFP&P rail bed. After that there were ups and downs through the forest. There is trail rerouting work going one currently (5/24/13) on the southern most 1.5 miles. As a result there are new trails breaking off which are currently unsigned. We kept to the newer looking trails and did get to the end without getting lost. There looks to be one more section being built and then it will probably get signs.

Did a nice loop hike today to gather data in order to post descriptions and tracks for three trails in the northern area of the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve. I started at the 10th Street access. 10th St from Carefree Highway is .5 miles paved and .5 miles good gravel road. From the small parking area I took the access trail .11 miles to the Sidewinder Trail, turned left and hiked another .17 miles to the beginning of the Ridgeback Trail. At the first junction with the Ridgeback Overlook I turned right on that trail following that back to the Ridgeback Trail. I continued on that to the Ocotillo Trail, turned left and followed that to the area where the new Sonoran Preserve Trailhead is being built. I took the Sidewinder Trail to its intersection with the Apache Vista Trail, followed that and returned to the Sidewinder. Then I continued on the Sidewinder back to the 10th Street access. The Sidewinder and Ridgeback Trails now have decals on the posts. They were on the Ocotillo as well from where I joined it to the trailhead. There were no decals yet on the Ridgeback Overlook or Apache Vista trails.

Did this hike to create a description and track for the Sidewinder Trail. Had to start at the 14th Street access since the new Sonoran Preserve Trailhead is currently under construction. Hiking from east to west on this trail is the harder way since most of the hills come at the end. I was dragging at the end and the heat didn't help.

Hiked a loop from the 10th Street access counter clockwise. The city is beginning to post the decals giving the trail names and mileages in this part of the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve. The main trail I used today is the Sidewinder Trail (as I found out today). It only had decals on posts to milepost 3.5 and is 6.98 miles long. I think more decals were being placed today since the park ranger's truck was next to my vehicle when I left and I never saw him/her (so he/she was probably going in the direction of where decals had not been placed yet). Also it appears the city is building a trailhead at the east end of this trail complex accessible from the new Dove Valley Road/Sonoran Desert Drive. I saw them clearing vegetation there and that is where, I believe, the Sidewinder Trail begins. I'll go back next week via the 14th St access and verify if I'm correct. I'll also check where it goes at the west end.

Sam & I hiked 2.5 miles in to a great viewpoint, had a snack, enjoyed the view, and hiked back out to the marina. It is a very picturesque hike and this was my 3rd time doing it. We encountered a rattler at the viewpoint. I walked past where it was without seeing it. When Sam came by it was angry and scared the heck out of Sam. Fortunately no one was bitten.
