After walking 5 miles from the back entrance of Beaver Island State Park to the start of the Nike Base trails, I walked along the Nike Base trails to the Gallogly nature trails (blue and yellow routes), ending at Assumption Cemetery. Saw a few deer in the woods. One deer jumped into the winding trail through the woods, was scared and ran quickly in my direction. When it was only 20 feet from me, it saw me coming around the corner so it made a quick U-turn and ran back in the other direction. Just one of those moments that I wished I had on video!

Around 10 am, hiked one-way with Dad and Mark B. from the trailhead starting at the Assumption cemetery through Nike Base park to West River road. Trails are very nice and there were only a few wet spots after some recent rains. There are a few bridge crossings over 6 mile creek. Starting temp about 59 but went up to about 63.

Did this solo walk/hike which ended up being a big loop around Beaver Island State Park. Also did some exploration of some less known trails branching off the Spaulding trail. High temp 68, Overnight low 50, Humidity: 52%, Wind: 5 MPH NE. Highs will be in the 80s this coming weekend and mid 70s during the week which is slightly higher than the average for this area.

Instead of hiking the normal loop which I did last year around this time, I hiked down to the creek, hiked to the South branch, took that and kept traveling down the South branch to see how far I could go. After about 3.25 miles, I saw a faint steep trail leading up to the North rim of the creek. I followed this up, and then saw some 'Private Property' signs heading North. I turned and went East instead and followed a dirt road which took me to a railroad crossing with a bridge to the South crossing the creek. There was farmland to the North and East of this point and the road seemed to end here. So, to avoid walking on private property, I walked back down the road and found an extension going to the bottom of the creek, crossed the creek and hiked up the steep but short climb to the South rim. Once on top, I found a road called Belknap road which I followed South for 1/2 mile until I ran into Bley road. It was only about 500 feet from the creek to Belknap road. I turned left and walked to the bridge going over 18 mile creek which is about where I finished my hike.

I realized when I wrote the guide that there were ruins here. I found 2 chimney structures that were in the woods, off the trail, within the first 1/4 of the trail.

Hiked the Whirlpool loop with Ed, starting off at Whirlpool State park and walking the path to Devil's Hole state park, headed down the staired trail to the lower trail section and hiked all the way to the rock overlook and back up the Whirlpool staired trail. This time we didn't go to the end of the trail because of time constraints.

I hiked a loop around Beaver Island State Park (about 3.5 miles total) plus a little extra. AEG was only 50 feet! But this hike offers a lot of scenery including trails through the woods, several picnic areas with rain shelters, the historic River Lea house, a public beach, a boardwalk, a marina, a golf course, kayak launches, and more.

I did the one-way loop from the cemetery to the river. My Dad came along doing roughly a 2 mile roundtrip loop, then drove to pick me up near the river. If there was more time, I would have done a 7-8 mile roundtrip going back on some of the other trails. Temp was 71 degrees, 86% humidity. Overcast day. Extremely comfortable. Saw only one other person walking a dog the entire time. Also noticed that the town planted some new trees in some areas along the far Eastern parts of the trail.

Hiked this classic workout hike with Jim and James. Probably my fastest time of all today. There wasn't any water flowing out of the pipe at Bellows Spring, but I was able to filter some water out of the stream directly below the trail. It was very windy at Baldy saddle, at the peak, and for the upper 0.5 miles of trail. We thought it felt like high 40s or low 50s at the top. We didn't stay on the peak for very long because of the wind. We saw a small rattlesnake 5 feet off the side of the trail coming down probably about 15 minutes from Josephine saddle. It was sliding back to a hole that was about 6 to 8 feet away from the trail. We saw at least 15-20 other hikers all day. It was busier because it was a weekend.

I started this solo hike early in the morning to avoid the heat. I started near the intersection of Park Line drive and Suizo wash. I also researched the Pinal county Land status viewer (https://pinal.maps.arcgis.com/) to make sure there was a clear route not on private land. I knew ahead of time that there was private property to the West and South of that starting point, but it appeared pretty easy to go around it. It's best to start on the South side of Park Line drive and walk to the Suizo wash, go under the bridge and once across continue North to avoid private property. At a certain point, I saw a sign saying AZ state trust land. The sign had so many bullet holes in it, it was a bit hard to read. Anyway, it didn't appear to be private property, so I proceeded. It looked as though others have went this way also. I bushwhacked until I ran into an old road/trail and followed that NW for a while. When it looked like I was getting too far away from Suizo mountain, I bushwhacked West away from the trail I was on until I hit a wash and then followed it for a while until I was closer to the summit. From there it was a relatively easy bushwhack to the top. I found and signed a registry at the high point. There were some hawks or ravens circling around above me, coming quite close. The oldest log entries were from Aug 1991, which is not so common to see. There was a log entry in Dec 1991 by a 10 year old named Tony Granek who made it to the top. That same 10 year old would be 41 today. I took a more direct way down running into a trail going South which connected up with a wash that ended up taking me North, so there was a bit of a backtrack there. I followed the wash going North and found some cattle which ran away from me as usual. After about 0.5 miles going North, the wash turned to the East and continued. I followed the wash going East until I ran into the same road/trail that I was on earlier. From there I went back almost the same route I followed earlier. I walked the fence line just to see what was there as I wasn't sure if there were any trail easements, but didn't see any. Again, I recommend following the wash under the bridge to the South side of Park Line drive to avoid having to squeeze through any fences. This hike would have been better in fall/winter, but still enjoyable and not too humid early in the morning.

I originally planned on hiking both Pinal and Signal from the Pioneer pass area. I knew the Pioneer pass campground was closed. I thought the road would be open, but it was not. Therefore, I was forced to drive up the road to the upper campground (Pinal campground). From that area, this hike isn't too challenging. I hiked to Signal peak the night before, camped overnight and summitted Pinal peak in the morning. My original plan was to hike 3 or 4 other summits in the area but because of road closures, trail closures, and terrible overgrowth, I decided it wasn't worth it. My GPS track for Pinal includes some exploration of the old Pioneer trail (#196) which hardly looked like a trail at all. That trail is in serious need of maintenance.

This is a short summit that uses the Arizona trail near the town of Oracle. I decided to bag this because it was one of the few peaks in the Catalinas that I have not yet done. I was surprised at how overgrown the Arizona trail was in this section. I guess after the monsoon, everything got bigger. I took the Arizona trail to the base of the hill and then bushwhacked up. There was a registry on top.

This might have been the shortest hike I've ever done. But, one of the last few peaks in the Catalinas for me. The trailhead was near the intersection of Mt Lemmon road and Cody Loop road.

Instead of taking the road down, I just bushwhacked down to the road making a loop.

I hiked Pete mountain via the Agua Caliente canyon trail.

I under estimated how long it would take to do this hike. The main reasons why it took longer than I expected was because (1) the Agua Caliente trail was hard to follow in so many areas especially in the 1/2 mile below the saddle North and West of the canyon, and (2) the trail going to the peak from the saddle was very overgrown and hard to follow, and (3) there was a hard rain after I got to the peak which made going down a bit slippery. About 1 mile up the trail, past a stream crossing, I saw a very interesting looking caterpillar that was gray and white with big round eyes that were black with a blue center. It was about 3 inches long and almost looked like a tiny armadillo. I have photos of this amazing creature if anyone is interested.

Going Northwest of Agua Caliente saddle there is a faint trail which is very overgrown and hard to follow. I lost that trail several times but ended up getting back on it each time also. When I was at the peak, I found a glass jar in a pile of rocks which held a registry. While looking around I found a walking stick bug and got some nice pics. About 10 minutes after I got to the peak there was a light rain which turned into a strong rain. I put my rain coat on and carefully started the descent. The water in the canyon was flowing very nicely. The trail probably crossed the stream 5 times.

From the small parking space to the West of this hill, the better way to hike this is the faint trail on the same side of the cattle guard. I started off taking the road on the other side of the cattle guard which I assumed would be the better route but I was wrong. The road dies out quickly, and then it becomes a hellish bushwhack to the ridge. Near the top there is a way to cross over the barbed wire fence. On the way down I found a much better route which was South of the barbed wire fence. I would not recommend hiking this in August as I did, as it was incredibly humid, even at 6,300 feet elevation. I did this mainly because it was one of the few peaks in the Catalinas that I haven't yet hiked. This hike would be better in the Spring/Fall.
