I didn't see a single person while hiking Wasson today. I was surprised, because it was fantastic. I didn't even need to carry water. Just perfect temperatures, but cool on the summit.

Air quality was pretty good in the basin, but I could see very brown air to the west and northwest. So, even if it ends up being a warm winter, at least the air here will be better than it was in the valley in 2018. I do recall driving to hike Picacho Peak in December of 2017, partly to escape the air pollution. Here, that isn't really necessary.

Awesome weather, but in another month consistent 80 degree weather is a bad sign. Lot of yapping and howling coyotes as I was hiking down.

The trail is not overgrown, so you won't have to fight vegetation if you want to summit Pusch. It is in pretty rough shape and seems over used, so there is that. People are hiking this one far more than in the past, these days, and either tourists or snowbirds are out with the season.

Pusch is one of those hikes that was better 7 years ago when I was in the Tucson area the first time. It was a beater then, but now it's a sometimes hike. After beater hikes like Piestewa or Camelback, Pusch loses some luster. At least I had a really nice afternoon for it, and it was gorgeous on top.

Too windy and not enough day light to hike to the summit, so I did this instead. At least the low is moving away and the air quality improving. Usual stuff to the North and west was visible.

Gray and overcast which is not my favorite. When I was almost back to the trailhead a coyote trotted through the parking lot with something in it's mouth. He saw me looking at him in the weeds, and kept on moving.

It has been warm enough lately I thought I could hike above 10,000' once more this year before winter. While everything looks like winter minus the snow, it was pretty mild for late November on Heliograph. Then again, for being about 600' higher than Wrightson, it was cold compared to last weekend. I was in shorts there. Here, I had on some layers. It might be nice to snowshoe on Heliograph or up the High Peak Road, if there is enough snow this winter.k

I also wanted to see about the trail work. Well, despite claims, the trail is not open all the way to the Noon Ridge. Close, but there are a couple hundred feet which remain thorny and are as they were in summer; terribly overgrown. Most of the trail has been opened up above this, but there is still a lot of locust and currents with thorns in that one section. Otherwise, no changes.

Also, the gully crossing remains. No new trail or improvements, so expect to use the rope, if you attempt this from Arcadia.

Very still out on this. No breeze and it was an eerie dead silent as a result. Very quiet out here when it is like that.

About as nice as conditions get for Wrightson in the fall. The forecast in town for me was 88, so it was mild on top and probably in the 60s. Felt like October, even if the sun was low and said November. Most leaves are gone, too. Still water in the major springs.

The air was a little dirty towards Tucson and the NW, but everywhere else it was clear. Very nice looking towards the Pinalenos and I got to thinking that maybe I should hike Heliograph from Arcadia soon since that trail might be rebuilt at the creek. I know the upper bushwhack was cleared, too.

Mostly silent on this hike, which is likely related to the time of year. I still heard some running water in the lower canyon, and there was a fair amount of deer. I didn't see any bears, but there was a huge pile of bear crap near the TH.

Still pretty nice out for this, but I could see some of that air pollution captured by Tibber yesterday in north Phoenix. The Estrella and 7 Miles were in a thick haze. Otherwise unremarkable.

I don't think it was as hot as forecast as it was really nice while hiking this. The air was pretty clean, too, with the Estrella and 7 Miles clearly visible as is common in winter. Coming around to the back thought I smelled bighorn. Just briefly, but who knows.

I came back down to the Huachucas to get some apples at the Miller Canyon Orchard at Betty's Guest Ranch. Unlike the Angle Orchard who seemed to have a great season, they had poor rainfall this year so this was my first time back since I picked apricots in June. Also, they have a bear problem. Probably related to the reduced rainfall. Either way, I was able to get about 13 pounds of Winesap, Albemarle Pippin, and a 3rd variety. I forgot the name.

Coming in, just before the switchback climb to the pass the Border Patrol had about a dozen illegals tied up on the road waiting for their transport to processing. They came over a pretty steep ridge to get there and it seemed like an odd spot. Either way, I guess they head up some of these canyons northward.

I wanted to hike something different, so I opted for Miller from the Crest Trail. I wasn't really a big fan of Miller Canyon, either. The south end of the Crest Trail is not a summer hike, that is for sure. Even now it was warm, but nice in the shade or higher up. I was glad I skipped this in June. This hike dose have some pretty expansive views especially to the east when descending, which was nice.

There has been recent trail work cutting trail and chopping the shrubs back. This first half of the hike is nice. It is getting thick beyond, so maybe they'll return to continue chopping the shrubs back?

Things are brown and dry again. The Huachucas are rather shrubby and brushy, and Miller feels almost the same as Wrightson. You just have a longer drive unless you live in Sierra Vista. More cliffs here, however.

Super nice day for Wrightson. Cool, perfect weather, and the sky was clear so the summit was nice. Looking a lot like winter out here now, with most leaves off the oaks, and the grass is golden everywhere down lower. No snow, obviously.

We took the upper Super Trail back to near Josephine Saddle for some variety. I like the lower Super Trail, but the back side of the upper trail is overgrown with a thorny shrub, so that wasn't much fun. One more time on the Old Baldy Trail is 20 times and a red dot for my profile, but today put me over 3.7 million feet of AEG, so that was nice.

Even though it was kind of hot out I enjoyed another nice day doing this. Views seemed dirtier than yesterday, especially towards Phoenix. Makes sense. The trail is wide open, not weeds covering it the way they do Finger Rock. Fresh paving at the trailhead, too.

It had been a while since I was all the way to the top of Safford and today was so nice I thought I should. It really was quite nice, and visibility was winter like with a clear view all the way to Peak 5024. Also, there was a coyote trotting on the road while driving out. I think I last saw 3 or 4 over near here in the summer. I was due for another.

The desert has lost most of the summer lush and green, and it is starting to look like it did last winter.

After my hike less than 2 weeks ago I had no plans to return to Kimball until November, but the trails to Wrightson are closed until tomorrow or Monday thanks to that tiny fire. After today, I still feel Wrightson is my new "favorite" summit or hike around these parts, but Finger Rock is still a solid hike. It's just not as enjoyable as I remember it being. Maybe I am just getting older? It can't just be me and how it makes me feel back at the bottom, as I notice it wears my shoes a lot more than Wrightson. Even after a single hike the tread wear is noticeable.

So, hiking this again I decided to perform a public service by bring pruning shears and removing 90%+ of the horrible Arizona thorn scrub plants, or cat claw that was all over the trail between the saddle and the pillars. It took me well over an hour to get most of it cut back. I didn't get it all, but coming down was a breeze compared to how I remember my last hike.

If someone wants to follow suit, there remains some intermittent cat claw between the cave and the saddle, and the trail still has tons of weeds and garbage all over the place. A shovel and pick might be helpful to rebuild more than a few sections. If I planned an event, would people bring tools to help reconstruct Finger Rock trail?

Excellent dry cool-ish weather made for perfect hiking. Wasn't really windy, either, despite the forecast. No complaints there. Lots of really pretty cirrus clouds around, too. Some were the flying spaghetti monster variety.

This is a lot more pleasant than Finger Rock right now. I could easily hike it a couple more times this year and earn another red dot.

Earlier reports of overgrown vegetation and slope erosion are accurate. I hope the vegetation improves with use in the next month or so, otherwise I won't really be hiking this. The erosion won't get better, but it is tolerable. As always, the trail is very rough, so maybe I still won't be hiking it every other weekend. Wrightson is much easier on the body.

The canyon got rearranged near the cottonwood, which was interesting. Very windy, but it seemed winder in the desert than on the mountain. Really gorgeous early fall outing on this.

The Angle Orchard has a a couple more weeks left and I wanted to pick a few more apples. It was also a pretty good day to hike this. Lots of yellow on the mountain while driving up. Very windy, however, and rather chilly with a cold front coming through.

After Heliograph from Arcadia in June, I pretty much came to the range to pick fruit every time I was here this summer. While I only did shorter hikes after my orchard visit, I still feel I got a good feel for the range. Perhaps, in the future I should try Lady Bug Peak from the Lady Bug trail, but that isn't really a summer hike in my opinion. After hiking this road to the top today, I have come to the conclusion that Heliograph Peak from Shannon Camp, loop or not, is probably the best hike or summit in the range for summer.

Views were nice today, but that wind was fierce. It still managed to be humid, too.
