Ugh! Am I the first person to log this for this season, again?

The trail is open and clear, with all the downed trees cut out. The snow is all but gone from the mountain, and the lookout tower is open for business. I took a long time today because I went to the Devils Head area and then went off the west side hiking around looking for the fire that occurred last week. I never found it. It was pretty small so I probably never will.

(4/27/08)I've been logging a lot of these trips to record the miles and elevation gain. Now that I discovered I can do this without boring others with my trip logs by hiding my trip logs I can enjoy my achievements and finally allow others to record some trips. This is great, I wish I had discovered this earlier and for other trails/ mountains I do a lot.

The road is open and this is a fun little trail to do on a Sunday afternoon. A little out there, but it has great views, and it was nice and warm today, then again everything around here finally was. Nice and gentle, and it might be a good hike for solitude and altitude acclimatization if you're from down low (anything under 5000'). How does one live in that thick, viscous air?

It was a pretty nice hike. The trees are leaving out and the neo-tropical migrants are back. All the calling birds reminded me of when I was working a few years back in Virginia. You just don't get that in Flagstaff. Come to think of it, we hardly ever get any calling wildlife that I hear. The constant hurricane force winds must drown them out.
The end of the trail was nice with the tall cliffs above you, but the trail felt a little short overall. Still, it is a nice hike. This was my first real hike after having my tonsillectomy on the 28th of March. I hate to say it, but I was really tired after it. I say that, but I forced myself to do Doe Mt afterwards. Then I regretted it as I felt horrible by the time I got back to my car. Interesting side note, the regular trailhead was packed when I got there just after noon. Instead, I parked at the Fay Canyon trailhead. It makes a great spot to park and do both Boyton and Doe. Plus, its got lots of spaces where as Boyton and Doe/Bear Mt lots have hardly any spaces.

Thats right, I'm logging this! I've never skied anywhere, until today. It was far harder than I imagined, especially when compared to snow shoeing. The Aspen lift was closed, so I had to learn on the Hart Prairie lift and run. I'm glad I took a lesson, and even more glad I finally did this. I fell a lot, but I got back up and then fell 50 feet later. It was quite a day. I'll sleep like a baby tonight, and wake up stiff tomorrow.

FYI: There were few people on the lifts/runs when I crossed them on Saturday for my Humphrey-Agassiz hike, and perhaps 10% of that out today. I spoke with a "higher up" individual who would be in a position to disseminate quality information and he told me that unless we get more snow, Snowbowl's expected closing is April 13th. So, get out now if you want to go again, and I recommend the weekday. On the other hand, lets hope for more snow.

A nice hike to do the day after Humphrey/Agassiz. Took my time on the way down and enjoyed the views. Lots of out of state tourists hiking today. Did Doe Mt afterwards.

A relaxing hike. I could recommend this to just about everyone but the wheelchair bound. Great views for so little effort. The sweeping vistas of the housing developments really hit the spot! I actually did like the hike.

It might be Spring everywhere else in Arizona, but on the Peaks it still looks like Winter. The visibility was winter-like, and the winds were non-existent today. Thats not at all spring-like for Flagstaff. It was so nice up there that I was able to make the traverse from Humphrey to Agassiz on the ridge between the two peaks. The snow on top was hard and stable, but anything on a SW slope was soft. On the way up I went through the bomber wreck and took some shots. The view from Agassiz was also good, and I took some pictures there again, too.

If you've been itching to hike Humphrey with deep snow you still have plenty of time left. even though it was turning to a crust of ice, it was still very deep on the mountain. The sign-in box on the trail was still under a foot of snow.

Came over on the ridge from Humphrey and then went down to Snowbowl. It was fantastic today. I couldn't have asked for better weather. Coming over from Humphrey was a lot easier this time since I stayed as high up on the ridge as I could. If you do this traverse, you will want to do the same.

Rip roaring winds and heavy flow on the river meant that we only went as far as the crossing before turning back. The winds made the dust on the trail fly, but it still had to be better than it would have been up on a mountain.

What a great trail in a really cool area. Even though the view of the Peaks is partly obscured by other pieces of the plateau, the views of the surrounding terrain and valley along the entire length of the trail more than make up for it. The walk across the sandstone dunes was fun and scenic. I would love to hike this trail at any time of year. It would be a great place to watch a monsoon storm build up and move around the rim.

I must not be wise. Actually, the trail conditions have improved greatly, and have really dried out. There are still some muddy spots mid way up. Snow is present and quite deep in some area, but almost absent in others. Once above 8900' its snow and ice all the way to the top, and the snow above the saddle is 3 feet deep in spots.
Spring winds are in full effect. I had planned on snow shoeing Humphrey today, but opted to try again next weekend due to a forecast for high winds up there. Unfortunately, I was greeted by them on Elden. Still not as bad as they would have been at 12,000'; Only 25 to 30 MPH. Before moving to Flagstaff, I had never lived somewhere that "wind" could be considered a season.

Nice little hike to try out my new RR pass. Went beyond the normal trail's end to do a little bouldering and climbing up into the canyon. In the narrow canyon the cold rock acted like a refrigerator and chilled the air. Lacking on views, but the side trip to the Indian cave and the ledge above it provided a good view to the south. The hike and area is nice, but the persistent helicopters flying tourists around was really annoying. I'm not one of those people who brings a gun on a hike, which is good because if I had I would have shot at the helicopters.

I went up to the summit again today. It would have been a perfect trip except for the fierce winds above treeline. Perhaps 40 to 50 miles per hour at times. The view to the north was fair, but the Verde Valley looked great today. The trail appears to be getting less use from snowshoers these days, but the skiers are still active.
This has been a very snowy winter on the Peaks. Today the sign-in box on the trail was dug out of the snow and the top was about 15 inches below the snow. It wasn't powder either, it was well packed snow which I was walking on. There must be at least 5 feet of snow on the trail at that elevation. I wonder how trail conditions will be in early June. I expect snow on them even then.

What a great trail into the Canyon. I don't know where that 3 hours one way time comes from, because we were taking our time when we made the river in about an hour and a forty five. Fantastic scenery, and great temperatures for the hike.

I am estimating the mileage based on being off trail and following some foot prints to the top for the last mile or so. Everything hiked above 8500' was off trail and pretty much a straight shot towards the tower. It was also in 3 to 4 feet of snow.
I don't know why I keep doing this trail. I guess, when everything is snow covered, and you don't have time to hike up Humphrey in your snow shoes, Mt Elden seems like a reasonable mountain to climb. Its not. Not this time of year anyway. The bottom is melting and its more of a mud slick in some spots than a trail (the fat man's loop part is really bad and I can't recommend that at all) and as you get above 8500' the trail disappears under some rather deep snow. I don't know how this hike would be this year if the trail was visible, but the snow is currently deep enough that without snow shoes on the upper 1/3 of the mountain you will end up post-holing your way up. Its wet and cold and not much fun. At least the mountain is wet this year. I should take my advice and stay away from this trail. Its not going to be much fun until dry conditions take over. If you stop seeing reports, I must have gotten wise.

Somehow, I once again hiked this on a day with lousy weather. Actually this was my third time on this mountain, and every time I have ever hiked it I have had not so great to just plain miserable weather. I have never really had a view when on top, and have come to the conclusion that the gods don't want me to hike this mountain.
Well before I summited it had clouded over completely, and by the time I reached the gravel road it was snowing. I could barely see anything off the mountain. It was lousy, no, miserable. Other than being bored with Elden and the day not being well positioned to do Humphrey again, this hike wasn't really worth my effort. Really, it felt more like a chore than a pleasure. But, this time of year with the snow and the road closures, there aren't many options. At least if it had been clear there might have been some good views. Perhaps next weekend I'll do something at lower elevation.
The trail was extremely difficult today. Heavy snow that was close to 3 feet at higher elevations covered it completely, and progress was not easy as a result. If you attempt this during this winter, bring snowshoes. But, with the amount of snow up there today, it won't really matter all that much. You'll still post hole. Unless we get a warm up and melt period, good luck. You might want to pass on this until spring.

I hiked in the rain to see if I could make it to the elevation where the precipitation would change to snow. I never found it, despite making it to about 8700'. I guess the weather service was wrong about their prediction of a 7500' snow line. The trail was mud and snow at the bottom, ice and snow in the middle, and rain soaked snow over ice from about 8000' to my turn around point on the "cat-walk". I haven't done this trail in 3 weeks, but I don't think I'm missing much. Not until spring anyway. Unless you have some crampons, I wouldn't recommend it until the upper portion's ice cover melts. I've done Humphrey plenty of times this winter, but I felt uncomfortable on the upper section where the trail narrows and the slope gets steeper. Plus there are some trees down over the trail.

Very slow going with some fresh powder on the mountain. I stumbled upon the bomber crash site, and only realized where I was when I saw the landing gear sticking up from about 200 feet below it. Heading up to treeline was very difficult with deep soft snow the whole way. Once on the slope I took to the ridge things improved, but the snow was not completely set and coming down I had to remove my snow shoes and rock hop in a few spots. I found out that in my 3 previous summits of Humphrey this month I came within 200 feet of the wreck and never knew it. Now I know how to get back there. Cold and windy on top (when compared to the 3 other times in January) and the view was not as stellar as the last few times either. The approaching storm may have been part of this. Still, its always an experience on the Peaks in winter. This hike makes 15 times that I've been up Humphrey, 4 times in snow/winter.

Stumbled on the site when heading up to the summit today. I found myself at the bottom of an opening and thought, "I wonder if I'm near the wreck". I scanned the terrain above me and found the landing gear. It was a pleasant surprise. I didn't bring my camera, but it wouldn't have mattered as most of the debris was buried under deep snow.

I'm logging this for the calendar/history.
I went with some folks from the local outdoor group. They were a little slower than me, but it was nice to have some company and their first time enthusiasm made the trip more enjoyable. Plus, I was getting a cold (and I probably gave it to them), so it was nice to be able to go slower and not wonder why I had to keep stopping to catch my breath. Fantastic conditions! Warm (for winter at 12,000'), clear blue skies, virtually no wind, and the views were spectacular (again)! Nothing like being able to not only see Navajo Mt, the White Mt's, and the Grand Canyon, but also the smoke/steam from both the SRP Navajo(Page) and Joseph City power plants. Plus, you could see all the points south, including the pollution and haze dome over Phoenix. The color contrast from the white snow and the deep blue sky is incredible. I love doing Humphrey this time of year. Plus, I hardly ever see other people. It was #14 on the peak, #3 in winter/snow. Its important to quantify this things for bragging and betting purposes ;-)
