Left Agassiz lodge, went on trail to the Dutchman Glade, followed tracks uphill to the treeline, then went up the set snow and ice to the ridge and the summit. Ran downhill in powder through the Dutchman, loosing about 800 vertical feet in 7 minutes. Lots of fun. Skiers hate that.

I did this in the snow Saturday. It's ashame this trail is too rocky to hike in snow shoes, I could have gone a lot faster in them. I suppose you could use them with 3 feet of snow, but Elden would never keep snow long enough to get that accumulation from multiple storms, unless it came in one shot. There was no view as it was foggy and snow was falling while I hiked. I'm really tired of this trail, I think I've done it over 50 times in the last 16 months since I moved here. Flagstaff needs more mountains. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to stick with the Peaks for now.

My time includes a traverse over the ridge from the saddle to Agassiz. If you do this, I recommend you stay as high up on the ridge as possible. Its much more stable and the snow is not as deep.

A great way to start the year! Up from Agassiz lodge to Humphrey in 2.75 hours and back up on Agassiz a few hours later. The weather was incredible. It was calm and sunny, so it felt very warm on top, a real treat compared to 3 weeks ago up there. In winter, the best way to hike up is with snow shoes in the packed trails.

I did this today when I did Humphrey. I came across the north ridge from Humphrey saddle, so I only counted 356 feet of elevation gain. I am using 1 mile, and 1 hour which is about what the traverse across from the saddle will probably take. This trip was much better, with no wind and the sun making it feel really warm up there.

FYI, if you choose to do this and Humphrey together, stay as close to the top of the ridge as possible when hiking between Agassiz and the saddle, and then again for the first 1/3 of the trip from the saddle to Humphrey. The snow on the southwest sides of the peaks is deep and likes to slide as it melts. This is problematic to say the least. The little snow that will be on the ridge is hard and stable. As always, use caution on top.

A great first hike on the peaks in winter. Very windy on top! The snow at the bottom was 33 inches deep and almost 5 feet deep just below tree line. It was a good hike.

A little muddy at the bottom (with 2.76 inches of rain in town) and deepening snow as I went above 7500'. Probably around a foot or so on top. Great views of the Peaks. The snow slowed me down but I'm glad we finally got some precipitation this season. When will Snowbowl open so I can do Agassiz?

This was a fantastic hike! I did this the day after Thanksgiving and the weather was a bit cooler than I would have preferred (low 70s at the bottom), but it was in the 90s a few days before and only the 50s the next day. It was so much cooler the next day due to a cold front. Unfortunetly for me this meant the front was approaching or coming through as I was coming down. This meant that there was abundant wind. Nothing like I've had on Elden or Humphrey, but still it was more than I wanted. I noticed wind blowing when I summited, but this worked out well because it forced me to leave sooner than I would have, which was good as it took 2 hours to come down and I was forgetting that these mild temperatures that I was enjoying were not the result of it being June (I live in Flagstaff) and soon it would be dark.
Part of why I loved this hike was the low elevation. It has a great deal of climb, is very steep in some spots, and has excellent views, but yet I never got winded! Compared to Humphrey's 6 days before I felt like a bunny on crack! I haven't experienced such boundless energy on an uphill in so long. I want to do this one again. If one packed enough water it could be a cool hike to do in summer when no one is out there hiking. Start early and summit before it gets too hot. Hang out in the shade and relative cool until later and then come down for dinner. I think it could workout well.

Hot on the way up with the sun beating down and temperatures in the middle sixties. Only moderate wind on top, but without the rock reflecting the sun on me it felt much cooler. A nice hike to follow Humphrey on Saturday.

A nice mid November hike up Humphrey. Not too cold on top, not much wind, but also no snow so far this year. Great late Autumn/ early winter visibility with really clear views of the canyon.

A great day for hiking Elden after hiking Humphrey the day before. The color is peaking and the weather was nice and warm. I ended up talking with the lookout operator (Anders, not Randal) for a while and came down in the dark. With Flagstaff lit up I felt like I was landing in an airplane after dark. It was a good hike.

This hike took much longer than usual, but it also felt like it was near or below freezing above tree line. There had been a forecast for wind gusts up to 40 MPH, but fortunetly my time spent on the mountain this day had little more than mild breezes. Probably nothing over 25 MPH. I wore many layers and was happy to have done so. I saw several insane hikers in T-shirts and even shorts.

I hiked this last September and took some pictures that I like. I thought they really made the hike worth doing. I don't remember much about the day, but I do think September is one of the prettier months to do this Peak. I came up the way I almost always did: from Schultz Pass and the south slope of Fremont, I skipped Doyle on this day.

On October 20, 2007 I hiked to Doyle Saddle and then up to Doyle Peak, the Doyle Shots are from that day.

I came up from FR 75 and the base of Bald Mountain. It took about 1.5 hours to come up that very steep and gravelly slope. I made the summit, but views aren't really good from there. So, I went off the summit a little to the east and got some good views of the cloud covered peaks. I hiked this the day after a heavy rain event and some clouds from the pacific low were lingering in the area. Not a bad little hike, but very steep AND gravelly so while I enjoyed it, its not likley to be a regular one.

It took me 2:10 up and an even 2 down. The wind was blowing very hard on the mountain making hiking difficult at times. With shorts and a shirt on it was down right cold up there. Summer is definetly over on the peaks.

Not a bad little hike. Very scenic. This was a good hike to do after a 14er as it was gentle and the only real stress came from the heat. I'll try this one again when the area cools off.

I had to start down in the Chico and work my way up the road from about 8000' to the summit at 14,345'. The weather was great this day...except when I was near and on the summit. Once on top I was shrouded in clouds and I had no view to enjoy. About 8 minutes after I got to the top a bolt of lighting hit a ridge (Mt Lindsey?) nearby to the east and I got off the summit in a hurry. It started to gromit on me and the temperature dropped making coming off in some class three stuff a little hard. Fortunetly by the time I was back below 12,000' the skies cleared. I made it down the really rough Lake Como Rd in about 3 hours and was out by 530pm. I want to do this again, but as a backpacking trip.

Up again in 2 weeks! This time I summited in under 2 hours; one hour fifty-five minutes to be exact. A bad hail storm with lots of lightning blew up and made coming down unpleasant to say the least. Still, it only took about 2 hours to come down. Always bring a poncho. Always.

Even with the strong monsoon action overall, Elden doesn't seem to be getting much rain. The mountain was so dry that the grasses which had started to grow earlier are beginning to die back. The trail is so dry, loose and gravelly (more so than when rained on) that it feels like the mountain never got any rain at all this year. 1:10 up, 1 down. The view was good, and I watched a small storm move in from the south, up I-17 and over the airport. It must have been small as the airport only recorded 11/100ths of an inch.

I am back to hiking this trail more than I want to. This is due to the monsoons, which have been excessively active this year and made hiking other trails risky. I think I'm up over 40 times for hiking it since I first hiked it about a year ago. I don't know why, but Randall the lookout operator is keeping the tower closed to the public and the FS has installed a gate at the base making tower ascent technically illegal. Fire risk has been low for some time now, so he must just hate the public, well the non-sexy public. One funny note- the tower may be closed, but Randall let about a dozen high school girl cross country runners that had run up the lookout road into the tower a few weeks back. He's a dirty old man. Got to love him. If no one is in the tower you can hop the gate and head up for a better view, its worth it. I wish we would get a break in the monsoons so I could head up Humphrey. Last time I did that I got hailed on.
