Another great day in the Superstitions! Beautiful weather, not too many folks, and too much trash left, but we hauled that out! We had a few light sprinkles and lots of cloud shadow to watch...even a rainbow! Saw a few tarantulas, too! Still an all time favorite hike!

Stopped off to check this out on our way to Grand CAnyon for a day hike/picnic. I would recommend starting earlier rather than later. We went around 11 AM and almost had the cave to ourselves. As we were leaving 2 hours later, a youth group of about 15 kids and a Boy Scout troup of a few more than that arrived along with 6 or 7 college students...a regular subway tunnel filled with people! This would be a good place to cool off in summer months for a change of pace.

Nice, easy dog hike for puppies who are a little too old to go as far as they used to. Also really convient to get to when you have a busy day and very little hiking time. Still, it has nice views, how can you go wrong anywhere near the Superstitions! We went right after a rain, so it was cool and beautiful.

We went out this morning just to check out the area. The rusted pole gate has signs on it saying road closed and it is pad locked shut. (Road closed due to public safety concerns.....whatever those are !) We followed the paved road up a little ways and found another parking area. Spent an hour climbing around on the rocks and walking around the wash. It's a pretty area if you ignore the mining stuff. Still, it wasn't exactly what we had in mind!

THIS WAS MY SECOND TIME UP TO THE SUMMIT, THE FIRST FOR MR. LANDSINAZ. I THINK OF THIS AS BEING VERY SIMILAR TO SIPHON DRAW/FLAT IRON, BUT OTHERS IN OUR GROUP THOUGHT IT WAS A BIT MORE CHALLANGING. WE SAW A WESTERN DIAMONDBACK ON THE WAY IN AND A MILLIPEDE ON THE WAY UP. OTHER THAN THE 4 IN OUR PARTY, THERE WAS NOT ANOTHER SOUL AROUND. THE MAILBOX DOES DESPERATELY NEED A NEW PAD OF PAPER, WE LEFT AN OLD ARAVAIPA MAP, SO THERE IS SLIGHTLY MORE WRITING SPACE. THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN HIKES. IT'S EASY TO GET TO, HAS A GREAT PAY OFF AT THE TOP, AND IS REALATIVELY UNPOPULATED. IT'S GREAT THAT IT IS COOLING OFF ENOUGH IN THE MORNINGS TO HIKE IN THE SUPERSTITIONS AGAIN!

What a great little hike to get out into the Superstitions after a cooling summer rain! Excellent trailhead directions and well maintained trail. We spent most of our time taking in the petroglyphs and still could have spent more time. No Bighorns this trip but losts of birds and lizards. The little pools are filled with tadpools and just metamorphisized toads the size of a small fingernail! This is a good one if you don't have all day to hik, but still want to get out aand feel miles away! We were really surprized to see only 2 other groups of people on this one. Maybe people thoght it would be too hot?!

Trail is in good condition despite being really wet and a little muddy in spots. Once we got to the far side of the lake, we didn't wee a single person on land, just a few kayaks on the lake. A nice stroll to get those under-used hiking legs going again!

This was a great alternative to Fossil Springs trail as it is closed. The water was perfect. It was surprizingly uncrowded for a Saturday. We had two dogs with us aand both ended up with damaged pads from having wet feet and hitting the trail too soon. We also encountered some campers who had a large fire burning around 3 PM----please remember to protect our forest. We would hate to see such a beautiful area destroyed because of carelessness or ignorance!

5/18/2002 The Forest Service has closed this trail due to 'extreme fire danger.' We saw several cars parked here to do the trail anyway, but it looks like most people opted to go in via the Flume trail.

Amethyst Mine trail is once again cairned if you want to go up Brown's Peak and down Amethyst Mine. The trail is not in very good shape from the top down towards the middle. Lots of downed trees---makes you feel like you are doing hurdles! Still, it's nice to have a different view and the Lupine are just starting to bloom. There was a Memorial service going on when we were there, but otherwise, no hikers except our party of 3!

We did this hike on a late Friday afternoon and it is amazing. Yes, that means the road is completely passable if a little rough. We had the entire canyon to ourselves and some really incredible lighting at sunset! Of course head lamps were a must for the hike out and it's still getting pretty chilly (34 degrees at 7 PM...), but well worth it for the view of the stars. This is a nice day get away for those of us who live in the East valley and don't always have as much time as we'd like to get out and enjoy.
