Hike at 1/6/07:

This hike has it all: On trail, off trail, scenery, bouldering/creek bed rock hopping, bush whacking with cats-claw, route finding, water features, and solitude. This is a fairly long and grueling hike, recommended for the more experienced hikers;

The hike takes you from the First Water trailhead south on the Dutchman trail#104 to Parker Pass. From there you take a secondary trail to the Right (Willow Springs Tr..unmarked and unsigned with sometimes cairon marked) over to O'Grady Canyon and on over Tim's Saddle and down into Boulder Basin then South to W. Boulder Canyon, then SE in W. Boulder Canyon. At this point you follow the creek bed SE to undergrown running-Willow Sprgs.(left side) and on the right side, an OLD STONE 6 ft ~1930 built HORSE CORRAL.. WHY?? in this most remote canyon area of the Superstitions???...

Start fm Miles TH end at 9:30am: hiked 2.25 miles West on W. Pinto Tr#212 to intersection of Cuff Button Tr#276, then hiked approx 4 miles in/up #276 (this trail is ~8 miles one way, ending at FR305), then a short lunch and turn-around at 2pm for the hike out and back to the Miles TH; End hike at 5:15pm;

12/27/06 Hike Notes: This hike was on the "official" Cuff Button Tr#276; Required: long pants/ long sleeve shirt, gloves(for trail overgrowth and kats claw); some areas of my 4 mile hike in on this trail were difficult to find the trail route, some steep and loose rocky ups and downs; cairns helped along the way and I built some additional cairns too for the next hiker; nice scenic views at high points, trail raps a lot around washes and gullies with lots of ups and downs to get back in this 4 miles, some dry creek crossings and a number of dry springs along the way and some old corrals and ranching history to see; nice variety of foliage along this hike; This hike is very remote hiking on this Cuff Button Tr #276; In the Spring'07 I plan to take my Jeep up to the North end of this Tr#276 (the end of FR305), and hike in the additional 3-3.5 miles to where I turned around on my 12/27/06 hike..and.. IF have enough time, will drive up 4x4 road FR306 to Musk Hog Springs to check-out the NE end START of the OLD decommissioned Pinto Peak Trail#213;

Happy New Year-2007!!

Preston, very nice hike writeup!

I did this same hike back on 11/4/06 via 4x4ing all the way in FR25A and we parked at that OLD BLUE BUS you mention in your writeup and have a picture of. The 4x4 drive all the way in FR25A is a very serious 3 miles, but a most scenic route with sycamores, aspens, and following the rocky creek bed within a beautiful high walled canyon with much mining history (and open mines) along the way before arriving back to where the old bus resides and where the South end start of the Cornucopia TR#86 begins.

On 11/4/06, I enjoyed this remote Mazatzal Loop Hike so much, and still think that it is a well kept secret hike in the Mazatzal's, that I plan to lead this same hike for my local hiking club sometime this Spring'07. Four of us are now scheduled to try and "pull off" this Feb'07, a PREHIKE of this LOOP HIKE via your writeup by starting where you did at the PEELEY TH. We may or may not be able too do this in Feb due to our AZ winter weather season now here and the higher altitudes at the PEELEY TH... we will see! I would love to take the club hiking group in via 25A to do this loop hike, but "no can do" and anyway it would add another 6 miles of hiking to the total hike distance and also the weekend days are pretty active in on 25A with all the ATVers which I don't think that my hiking club would enjoy smelling the fumes, extra dust, and noise.

Do you or does anyone know exactly where the location is on 25A or off the Cornucopia Tr where that old Mercury Mine use to reside?... is it actually right where the Old Blue Bus now resides?

Regards,

I did this loop clockwise and when we reached the high point of the Y-Bar Tr#44, we could not figure out what to do next (ie, where the Y-Bar went from there (up or down) to connect with the Mazatzal Divide Tr #23 at Windsor Spring.. so we made the mistake of hiking parallel to the ridgeline toward Windsor Springs (don't try it!) and then after reaching it.. not a perennial spring, we then lost another 20 minutes trying to find the 23/44 trail intersection; After finding it at 1:30pm and not having a lunch break yet, we thought we had it "licked" and took a 45 minute lunch break, then took off on the wrong way on the #23 trail and lost another 30 minutes... then after finding the right way to go to get to the 6 mile North end of the Barnhardt Tr, we had no idea how long and grulling a bushwhacking hike we still had to complete to finish that ~3.5 mile portion of #23 to get to the Barnhardt... to make a long story short, we reached the North end of the Barnhardt..still 6 miles in... one hour before dark. With flashlights, we reached the Barnhardt TH and our vehicle at 9:15pm... ONE TO REMEMBER!! :roll:

I was just checking out the "W" listed hikes in our hike data base, and came across THIS ONE :roll: , which brought back some very vivid memories of how two of us spent APRIL FOOLS DAY-2006!!

On that beautiful April Fools Day, our original plan was to hike the W.Pinto Trail#212 from Rogers Trough TH (leaving at 9:30am) to the other end at the Miles TH, then back... this would have been an 18 mile hike, but by the time the two of us arrived at the Spencer Tr intersection with the West Pinto Tr (about 7 miles in), we were already so chewed-up from cats claw and frustrated with so much trail overgrowth and negotiating downed trees on that West Pinto Tr section, that we decided it had to be easier to take the Spencer Tr#275, its ~4.6 miles back up to FR650 and then just walk on the forest road, the ~3.5 additional miles back to our vehicle and Rogers Trough TH.

Little did we know what was in-store for us on the Spencer Trail hike section... I won't bore you with all the details, but this LONG 4.6 mile SPENCER TRAIL HIKING SECTION is without doubt, the most difficult route finding hike I have yet to do in the past 3 years I have been hiking the Superstitions. It is really a beautiful, scenic view trail with a lot of elevation gain and loss and running seasonal creeks, BUT once you hike in for a distance, once committed!!.. The overgrowth-cats claw on this trail is very bad and there are numerous spots where the carins just end or become very confusing and you can and probably will wander around trying to find the next correct segment of the trail. IF hiked correctly and IF this loop hike really is 14 miles (I think it is more like 16 miles with the walk on FR650), then on 4/1/06 my hiking buddy and I wandered around to find the correct trail for an additional 1 mile at least. With the Superstition Wilderness Map, a GPS, and two of us to sort out the options, we finally arrived at FR650 at 6:30pm,(30 minutes before dark).. then we hiked on FR650 for 2 miles after dark, then I waived down a pick-up truck for a ride the additional ~1.5 miles back to ROGERS TROUGH TH and our vehicle... I think it was after 10:30pm before we arrived home!... IF you decide to do this loop hike, just re-read and note: ALL THAT IS DETAILED IN THE ORIGINAL HIKE WRITE-UP STILL APPLIES TO THIS LOOP HIKE..and..THEN SOME! I am glad I did this hike as it was a big accomplishment for me, but next time I plan a hike on April Fools Day, I will put a lot more thought into where I decide to go when I plan to start hiking at 9:30am.. 8)

A nice loop hike and a nice way to spend my time while visiting Kartchner Caverns State Park awaiting my 3:15pm tour time for the "Big Room".

This day hike and summit of Mount Langley was part-of a longer 4nt/5day (9/4-9/8) Sierra Club (San Diego Chapter) sponsored Labor Day 1992 backpack bus trip. We departed and returned five days later in from Lone Pine, CA, at the popular "Horseshoe Meadow- Trail Pass TH" at 9950ft elevation.

I don't recall the total round-trip miles or AEG for this combo backpack/day hiking trip. I do recall it was another very rewarding and memorable trip to our CA Eastern Sierras that I will always be :D for having done..

An epic day-hiking life experience.. :y:

Started in from Whitney Portal TH before dawn at 5:30am and returned on adrenalin only to same TH 14hrs later at sunset 7:30pm.. :sweat: :sweat:

Arrived at Mount Whitney 14,497ft summit with altitude sickness and remained long enough to sign-in to the trail register and have a picture taken of me standing on the summit holding a banner which read: "Mount Whitney 14,497ft". After the summit pic, it began to hail with wind and the temperature dropped by about thirty degrees. It was a challenging 21.4ml day hike both up and down for me with altitude sickness relief when I reached a decent altitude of 10,365ft at the Outpost Camp with only 3.5 miles to go..
