| no partners | | I keep thinking about how hiking has changed for me, and how so many other things have changed in all of our lives. It's easy to notice the couples who hike side by side as they pass other hikers, the hikers headed downhill who walk right past nice spots to get a good distance off the trail when I'm headed uphill, and the groups of multiple family groups. There are a lot of noobs out there because hiking is one of the few ways to get serious exercise in my neighborhood. I see a lot of fellow hikers wearing basketball shoes.
I thank the heavens every day that I'm a 15-18 minute walk from Shell Ridge Open Space which is adjacent to Mount Diablo State Park. I've also been thinking about how fortunate I've been during this whole mess compared to so many other people, and how I should be more tolerant of less experienced trail users. People who may have far weightier matters on their minds than proper trail etiquette, and are just trying to get some exercise while trying out a new sport. People who are more focused on how psyched they are to have finally discovered the wonderful hiking opportunity in their neighborhood. We really do live in an accepting community.
At first I was tempted to lash out, to tell them the way it needs to be (according to me!), but now I find myself more accepting of how people who aren't decades-long hiking enthusiasts use the trail. It's getting warm here so there should be fewer people on the trails, except for the next week, but I think it's a good thing that so many people discovered hiking over the last 2 months. |

Wildflowers Observation Moderate The poppies are starting to dry out and die, and the range is turning dry and golden as normal for this time of year. |
