Today was much warmer than last Saturday when I hiked in Sibley. Not as many people as there normally is, but still a lot.
I saw a kewl kestrel, and Mount Tam rising above the clouds across the bay was spectacular.

The all-time undefeated champion: Shell Ridge Loop. It's still cold out, and I'm ready for a pineapple express. At least that would warm things up a bit, and we could really use some serious precip.

I had been wanting to get back to Sibley for a while now, and apparently many other people had the same idea. I hadn't been here for 9 years, but it hasn't changed a bit. This area was obviously heavily grazed recently, and I wouldn't be surprised if cattle are rotated through this area on weekdays.

My original plan was to get all the way to Redwood Regional Park, but my right knee and left calf weren't having it. It was pretty cold (high 40s and low 50s) with a lot of wind, I only needed my gloves at the beginning. I remembered a trick for hiking with a beanie: reverse it every half hour to keep it dry. Perfect.

Short and steep. Always a blast to get back to Briones. My left knee is a little grumpy after this one. Cold and breezy.

I decided to leave work a little bit early to hike Shell Ridge in the ever advancing cold and cloudy darkness. It was actually pretty cool because the clouds to the west put off a nice show with pinks, purples and dark grays. I'm so grateful to have Shell Ridge as close as it is.
I've learned that even a little slice of nature can reveal a new part of itself every time I look at it. One of its many fine qualities is an ability to quickly dry out after a rain event. The northern half of Shell Ridge seems to be made of extremely well-draining material with the exception of the quarter mile between the end of Marshall and the beginning of the paved road up to the ridge.

Just a short jaunt each way from Bull Valley Staging Area down to brunch at the Bull Valley with a new friend. The views of the Carquinez Strait were nice, especially because the sun is low in the south this time of year. The larger chunk of the Carquinez Strait Shoreline to the east looks to have a nice 7.5-mile loop hike, but this section only has about 3+ miles of trails.
We hiked down to the Bull Valley Road House in Port Costa which is why it took us over two and a half hours to hike 3.9 miles. This place has the best breakfast sausage that I've ever had, and it's not even close. We took a longer, more leisurely route back to the trailhead, and saw a nice red-tailed hawk. There was cattle about including a bull without any horns, but he was just chilling. The hills are green and the cows are fat and happy.

A little overnight splash of rain washed away my plan to hike the Pine Mountain Loop in Marin because it would've included a 4-mile stretch of pure mud so I settled on Nimitz Way because it's largely paved. Some muddy stretches, but nothing crazy.

The day started out cloudy with misting going on across Wildcat Canyon, but ended up being gorgeous. I hiked for a bit with a nice couple I met on Wildcat Peak. Paved Nimitz Way all the way past the Nike missile site to Mezue Trail which I took down to Wildcat Creek Trail. Unfortunately I started immediately coming back uphill on the Havey Canyon Trail which had a few stretches of mud. Nothing too crazy, but definitely some hairy stretches. Then I went up to the actual Nike missile site because I had to hit that high point. Returned on the Nimitz Trail with its usual ridiculous afternoon views.

Great way to start the new year! I'm going to push for 500 miles and 100,000' of AEG this year. I need to get in a lot of miles before I hike the Grand Canyon in late April. My feet are going to need some work.

The weather was gray, but not terribly cool. There were a ton of people out as usual. I didn't see a lot of wildlife, but I did see a kestrel, a couple of goofy barn swallows and a bunch of cows. A few muddy stretches, but they were easily conquered.

Nice little loop before the rain started. I can't believe this was only the second time I've been to Lafayette Reservoir. I prefer the upper Rim Trail to this shorter and flatter paved trail, but this fit the bill today. We followed this with brunch at Batch and Brine in Lafayette, one of my favorites.

I really enjoyed getting back to the Marin Headlands in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It was a little on the cool side today, and the usual crowds were out in force, but the sky was a beautiful bluebird blue.
I encountered a few ravens that were very comfortable being close to people which made for good pictures, but makes me suspect people feed them.

Nice trip up Stoney Mountain. I always enjoy this unassuming little summit, but I wish all of my fellow travelers displayed better hiking ethics. Hiking to or from the summit on anything other than the use trail along the ridgeline is not only unsafe, but harms the natural environment.

I always enjoy hiking out of Spur Cross. I took the Cottonwood Trail to the petroglyphs. It was a gorgeous day, and the saguaros contrasted against the deep blue sky was delightful. There was a lot of water in Cave Creek. It was a really good day to be out in the desert.

Fairly unremarkable hike up Piestewa Peak EXCEPT FOR RUNNING INTO JOE FREAKING BARTELS!!! :y: It was great to see our fearless leader in his natural habitat, and also great to get back on the mountain.

It's always a blast to hike with the Stiller when I get to town. This was an inspired choice. I was surprised to realize that I'd never done anything in the main part of Red Rock country south of Sedona so this hike was much appreciated. I was amazed that this was the first hike I'd done with Stiller where I drove. I'm not sure he appreciated my California-style driving (it wasn't that bad), but we got back pretty early which was cool.
I like the Arizona cypress that are found in the area.
