Cloudy and cold after rain the day before. Wildflowers continue to become more common, and the trees are starting to resemble their normal selves.

Apparently someone was dumb enough to go hiking in the cold rain. Guess who that person is?

There were surprisingly a decent number of people, but the rain wasn't that bad, and Nimitz Way is paved for about 4 miles. I went out about 3 miles and came back while hitting Wildcat Peak on the way back. It was lightly raining when I started, not raining in the middle, and very lightly raining when I finished.

I saw a lucky worm, a cool rough-skinned newt and a covey of California quail. Some unhappy wildflowers were also seen.

We wanted to check out the Sargent cypress forest and serpentine wonderland on San Geronimo Ridge, and then head up to Pine Mountain for some nice turkey sandwiches. I was reminded why I keep coming back to this area. Great views, botanical curiosities and the feeling of being 'out there.'
I had only done the big loop hike, but my company wasn't up to it so we kept it mellow.
It was too windy for good pictures of the Sargent cypress in spite of the near-perfect lighting conditions. Today was a good day.

I really liked this loop. Counterclockwise to the saddle then clockwise on the southern half back to Briones-Diablo back to the saddle then up to the high northern peak then down the north switchback. It would all make sense if you did it.

Shell Ridge is simply a phenomenal amenity to have a mile away.

There's now about a half dozen clusters of California poppies. We are a week or two away from wildflowers changing from Isolated to Light.

Nice day out in Point Reyes with CN. We had a bite to eat out on Limantour Beach which was lovely, then went back up to Muddy Hollow. Hiked up the Bayview Trail to the Inverness Ridge Trail then back down the Drakes View Trail. Lots of mountain lion poop which seems to be the general theme on Inverness Ridge.

Spring fever is here. However, we need a lot more rain. I don't want to spend another summer choking on smoke. I saw a second cluster of California poppies.

Took a slightly different route this time on my local loop. I saw a nice coyote that didn't seem overly concerned with the few people who were out in the crazy wind. The wind reminded me of a Red Flag day so thankfully it isn't fire season.

Typical Shell Ridge loop. Not a lot of people out there today despite the weather being drop dead gorgeous. Still just the two California poppies, but there are some others on the way from the same plant. I saw a nice kestrel on the way down. Those things really don't like people getting close to him. The barn swallows were more cooperative with respect to having their picture taken.

Left work a little early to enjoy the first non-cold day in weeks. Great colors in the sky at sunset. I saw the first two poppies of the year near the high point.

Nice little hike on Shell Ridge. I mixed it up a bit by descending the switchbacks on the north side because I almost always take the road.

Lots of haze around the bay and the inland valleys in the East Bay, but it was sunny up on the ridge top. I wish I would've worn shorts because it was gorgeous today.

Today was much warmer than last Saturday when I hiked in Sibley. Not as many people as there normally is, but still a lot.
I saw a kewl kestrel, and Mount Tam rising above the clouds across the bay was spectacular.

The all-time undefeated champion: Shell Ridge Loop. It's still cold out, and I'm ready for a pineapple express. At least that would warm things up a bit, and we could really use some serious precip.

I had been wanting to get back to Sibley for a while now, and apparently many other people had the same idea. I hadn't been here for 9 years, but it hasn't changed a bit. This area was obviously heavily grazed recently, and I wouldn't be surprised if cattle are rotated through this area on weekdays.

My original plan was to get all the way to Redwood Regional Park, but my right knee and left calf weren't having it. It was pretty cold (high 40s and low 50s) with a lot of wind, I only needed my gloves at the beginning. I remembered a trick for hiking with a beanie: reverse it every half hour to keep it dry. Perfect.
