Dog meet-and-greet hike with Wil and Collin, followed by grill and fire pit time. Great evening.

Post-Thanksgiving penance hike with great friends John, Zane, Preston, Tim and Tim’s brother Brian. Beautiful day and we beat most of the crowds. Always preferable to Black Friday shopping!

Solo evening hike at the old standby. Not a soul on the trail and an amazing sunset to finish it off.

Quick morning hike with Wendi and Meia followed by lunch at Handlebar. Definitely a net caloric gain, but sometimes that’s okay.

Nice morning hike with Chris and the dogs. Breezy and shady at the saddle. Only saw one other party the whole time.

Beautiful, shaded climb with Sam in South Mountain. We did four routes that got progressively easier. Great area for Fall through Spring!

Got a good group onto the trail with the dog. Nice little side trip to the ruins. Followed it up with a great lunch with Gary at Blue Adobe. Good start to the weekend!

Working on 68-degree days is for chumps. So I Carpe Diemed and left early so savor the weather with the pup. We had solitude and shade and who could ask for anything more??

Last-minute partial hike before Tim was ready to move. We didn’t finish but it was still nice.

Kicked off the Valley hiking season with a local favorite. Gary and Powers joined (and Meia). A little warm but light crowds and beautiful!

Part 2 of overland/hike trip. Awoke to excessive dog licking and unexpected light rain. Hot coffee and oatmeal under the back hatch was a great way to start the day. Finally got on the trail about 10am under welcome cloud cover. Had the whole trail to ourselves. The views were spectacular; but at the tower I saw a sizable cell headed right our way so we didn’t linger. We got a steady rain most of the way down, making the closed-in trail almost eerie.

Got back to the truck only lightly wet. Decided to save the Crown King leg for another day and instead returned to Prescott via Walker road. Had rain all the way until we merged onto the 17 and reality. This trip was exactly what I needed before a busy Fall.

First leg of a quick hiking/overland trip with Meia the dog. Plan A was to finally do more than 2 miles of Weatherford, but Schultz Pass Rd was closed. Turned out to be a blessing in disguise: Parked at the blockade on Elden Lookout Rd and jumped on to Brookbank somewhat aimlessly. That trail was depressingly washed-out and charred until the first saddle. Then it was paradise and solitude. Ate lunch to the sound of elk bugling (probably actually hunters calling) and used Verizon's double-edged sword of a network to find Tibber's Schultz Loop track. Sounded like a good plan to me! The road closure provided great quiet and solitude along the Schultz Creek Trail, which is exactly what I was after for this trip.

By the time we reached Rocky Ridge, Meia and I were questioning our wisdom. Turns out laying off hiking for a summer isn't great for endurance. No matter and no tears - we pushed on to the truck still happy as clams. Meia tried to pass out in the middle of the street but I roused her for a pint at Historic. Both energized after that, we trucked over the beautiful 89A to Groom Creek where we happily shared a rotisserie chicken before passing out in the back of the 4Runner. A perfect day. Part 2 of the adventure to follow!

Got out before the Labor Day crowds/boats with Gary, John and Tim. Kind of a nice change to be on a lake. Very serene in the canyons/tributaries.

Quick, impromptu morning paddle with John. It was made quicker with the higher flow. On and off the river in 90 minutes. Would’ve liked longer but can’t complain about a quick retreat!

Managed to get a good group on the river with Gary, John and Tim joining. Crazy-low water levels had me grateful for my flex fin. Much better avoiding the mess downstream from the Verde confluence.

Relatively crowd-free paddle/float. May have had something to do with the conditions beyond the Verde/Phon D. Looked like millions of gallons of chocolate milk was being poured into the Salt. Had we known how bad it looked and smelled we would’ve stopped. Probably shot for the season. But upstream was beautiful as always!

Beautiful little excursion during our Bozeman weekend. We actually changed it up last minute based on a local’s recommendation. Wendi turned back at history rock a mile in. Good for her because the next mile got really steep. Unfortunately she missed the true reward of the hike once the trailed leveled out over the ridge. One of those easy trails with beautiful scenery that beckons you to hike forever. Hard to believe we were barely in the recreation area. Definitely a place to return and explore.

Another quick escape from camp. This was a great surprise considering that my planning consisted of choosing the closest trailhead via Route Scout. Just a few steps down the trail and I was dropping into a stunning oasis fed by the recent deluge. Jumped in and enjoyed a shower and chill time behind the falls. Amazing!

Snuck away from my duties at the kids' marching band camp to get a few miles in. Nice run going downhill; but not so pleasant on the way back up!
