Weaver's Needle Crosscut Loop - Went from Bluff Springs Trail to Terrapin to Weaver's Crosscut to Peralta to Cave Trail back to Peralta TH. A very beautiful hike. I agree with another triplog that the Weaver's Crosscut valley should be called the "Valley of the Angry Ducks".

I started at the free TH, which definitely took some mileage off. I didn't quite make it to the top. I hiked for a little less than two hours and found myself 500 feet from the top (and about 300 in elevation). I was afraid of running out of daylight, so I turned around.

This is now one of my favorite hikes! I loved doing it solo and having time to just veg out and meditate. It was a relaxing day where I only saw 7 people, 6 of them were on the Bluff Springs trail on the way back to the car. I really liked finally seeing the eye of Miner's Needle and exploring around Crystal Spring. There was plenty of water throughout the hike. Next time, I'll take the time to explore Williams Camp. I took a short detour onto the Terrapin trail, but didn't make it to the Weaver's Needle Overlook. It was about 50 degrees the entire trip and the wind made it a bit chilly.

Happy Birthday Mom. You would have been 65 today.

What an amazing day. We started out at 8:04AM at the LDSP as we thought it would be a good idea to be wait so it would be slightly warmer on top. On top we explored the Flatiron for a while until the clouds / fog really started setting in and then we went to the South side, checked out the plane crash (from afar) and then had a quick bite while looking at what we think was Canyon Lake (Saguaro Lake?). The fog really set in and then we started to look for the cairns for peak 5024. We missed the cairns and walked 3/4 of the way around the peak, bushwacking around until we gave up. The visibility was about 20-30 feet at this point. On the way back, the fog cleared up a bit and we easily found the cairns to 5024. It was a fun jaunt to the top. We walked around, found a very discreetly hidden peak log. Signed the log and then we headed down. As always the trip down was far worse than the trip up in my opinion. Next time I go up the Siphon Draw, I am coming down Carney Springs. :)

What a great shuttle hike. We started out at First Water and ended up at the Peralta TH. The views of Weaver's Needle were amazing, especially in the early morning with all of the low cloud cover. Nick, Mike, and I had a great time.

A great trip with my best buddy Lucy the golden retriever. I went to where Bluff Springs intersects with the Terrapin Trail and then I turned around.

Had I been in better shape, this might have been a good hike.

Mike and I started out around 7:30 AM. We bounced along in the cool morning excited to try and climb this mountain we've both stared at for the past few years. I was carrying 170 ounces of water, Mike had about 148. We made it to Garden Valley where we met a SARS trainee, then we met some Neo Nazi's carrying assault rifles, and finally a group of four girls and a guy where two of the girls were carrying no water at all. !

We went down the Second Water trail to Boulder Canyon. We rock hopped through the creek bed to the Southern end of Battleship Mountain and we started heading up very slowly. It was at this point we had the good fortune of meeting Tough Boots! This great guy took the time to help guide us up the mountain, which I am certain saved us a good hour of hunting the correct route. After a nice rest at the top we headed down. By this time it was 90 plus degrees outside for this AC lover.

At this point, I started feeling sick to my stomach and getting the chills. I then tripped and slapped my gloved hand onto a barrel cactus and shortly thereafter walked into a cholla.

After a couple of long rests where I pulled cholla needles out of both of my legs with pliers, we finally made it to the shade in the creek bed of Boulder Canyon where I took a 30 minute "cool down". I was guzzling water like crazy this entire hike, but I certainly wasn't handling the heat and exercise well. I was walking at a very slow clip, but we finally made it back to the car at around 4:30PM, which is when my water ran out.

This was the type of day where I was thankful for having my patient uncle Mike with me!

The whole Houston family walked about a mile into the West Fork of Oak Creek. What a beautiful hike! My girls played in the creek with their water shoes, and my dog Lucy had a great time too! We had lunch on the trail. It was starting to get really busy when we walked out. I loved the cabin ruins.

Went camping this weekend. I left early on Friday with Lucy so we'd have a chance to do the AB Young trail. I started at around noon. It was beautiful at the Bootlegger Day Use area, but it was probably low to mid 90's on the hike up. The hike quickly degenerated into a dash from shady spot to shady spot. My dog Lucy really had a hard time with heat, so we had to stop often. We went through about 4 liters of water between us and Lucy had plenty of Oak Creek water too!

We checked out the East Knob Fire Lookout Tower, saw a deer, and wandered around the forest for while. We both took a nap at the top of the switchbacks while waiting for the shadows to cover more of the trail before heading down. :)

A great hike, but the heat on the way up made it a tough one.

What a great hike! Ben, Bill, Mike, Nick, and I made the trek up Brown's Peak. We didn't see any tarantulas, but we saw some cool tiny horned toads. The views were incredible.

We made it 4/5ths of the way up the scree chute before turning back. It was a great day with a great bunch of guys.

Sheri and I did this hike starting about 11:30AM. The parking lot was full, but we got lucking and found someone leaving just as we got there. This was a very pleasant hike. We kept trying to guess where the ruins of Indian dwellings were located, but never got confirmation. I never did find the vortex either. :)

Sheri and I did this hike the second thing after getting to Sedona. The first thing was to purchase our annual Red Rocks pass for $20.00. This was a great hike to get us re-introduced to Sedona! Sheri did a great job as this was her first hike on steep, slick rock.

A quick solo hike today. Did this as a shuttle hike. Started at the Telegraph Pass TH trail, then National, and then took the Corona de Loma trail to the Warpaint TH. I really liked the Corona de Loma trail, it was pretty quiet and very tough! Happy Birthday self!

A great hike with Uncle Mike! We started at the Roger's Trough Trail Head. After checking out Elijah Reavis' grave, we continued our hike to Reavis Ranch. We both loved the changes in scenery, along with the changes in elevation. The ranch and apple orchard were a fun destination! On the way back, we met up with a couple of hunters with pack horses. I don't think they had gotten any game on their trip. The way back was a lot of fun, but the last mile and a half were really tough from an energy standpoint.

One of the hardest things about this hike is the drive on 172 and 172a. These roads continue to deteriorate in my opinion.

A fantastic hike in the Superstitions. My uncle and I started at the Peralta Trail parking lot, walked over to the Lost Goldmine TH and took the trail to the Carney Springs TH. We went up Carney Springs to the West Boulder Saddle and then walked over the trail towards Fremont Saddle. We took the Robbers Roost detour which was the highlight of the trip. Thanks to the posted GPS route and a copied triplog description, we were able to find Robbers Roost without too much trouble. I am certain we never would have found it on our own. This is one of my favorite West Superstition hikes. The only negative was the hike down the Peralta trail from Freemont Saddle. It just seems to take forever! What a great hike!

A fine Sunday morning hike with my uncle up to Tom's Thumb. We started a bit North of the Gateway entrance off of Thompson Peak Pkwy. The views at the top near Tom's Thumb were spectacular, but the loop back down was a bit too long for my aching feet!

Another great memory with Uncle Mike!

As part of our Flagstaff vacation, we went once again to the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. This time, however, the whole family was able to do the 1 mile Lenox Crater hike! I feel so fortunate to share my love of hiking with my wife and girls. Everyone had a good safe time and I know the girls enjoyed playing at the top. The only negative was that Meredith got a splinter that took a couple of days to come out.

To celebrate my daughter Meredith's 4th birtday, my family and I went to the Tonto Natural Bridge and completed two short hikes. The Gowan trail which is 2200 feet long and the Anna Mae Trail which is 500 feet long. At the end of the Anna Mae, my wife and girls played in the water for a while. The hiking was pretty steep for four and five year olds kids. I am so proud of them for making it without complaining!

It was an unusually cool morning on the 31st, so my Uncle and I hiked the Bell Pass trail to the saddle where you could see Four Peaks etc. We started at the new Gateway center parking lot and returned the same way. A nice 7 mile hike!
