Drove right up to the Orizaba Mine gate this time, but it was locked and posted as private property.
Checked out abandoned shafts on ridge to the west, chatted with some trials riders who knew the owner and had permission. Bopped down to the multiple mine openings and equipment, but uneasy with the presence of "friendly" guard dogs roaming the canyon floor.
Chatted with a retiree on a quad, lost, no map, no water, no hat. Pointed him in the right direction and wished him luck. He seemed unconcerned with his lack of preparation.

Tough 4WD under I-17. Went up wrong drainage, first major navigational error in over a year. Rough country to get back on line. Orizaba Mine too far at that point, rain blowing in and I was out of food. Nice walk in the rain on the way back, though. God I love that smell.

Spillgate viewing attempt. Waing through fast muddy water and Tamarisk to get a closer look at the torrent. Good view but 300 yds. Not safe to get much closer.

Northeast of Lake Pleasant. Rough 4WD within 1/4 mile of summit, then a pretty decent foot trail to the top. Very nice ruins. Beautiful white stone.

South Kiabab to Phantom Ranch. Camp. Dayhike to Ribbon Falls, Almost as good as Havasu, but few visitors. Second night at Phantom Ranch.
Up Bright Angel to Plateau Point, had lunch with a California Condor, (no. 22). Then on to Horn Creek along Tonto. Two 8 - point bucks fed nearby as I set up camp.
Last night at Monument Creek. Awesome pink stone mini-slot canyon.
Out via Hermit's Rest Trail, 45 deg, drizzle, 10-40 mph winds. A serious endeavor.
Absolutely incredible beauty, I could do the canyon at least twice a year for the rest of my life.

Found windmill and old corral, but no water at Sweat Spring.
Peak had a bronze plaque on top reading a man's name, followed by "Our Father, Tough as Leather". Also the date 1910 scratched on a rock nearby.
Almost angered a bees nest on west side of summit, not a good place to try to run from bees.

East of Lake Pleasant. Small spring, perhaps 30 gallons, but nice shade. Followed drainage north through small section of white stone tanks and a mini slot canyon.

North of peak dominated by gun enthusiasts and an incredible amount of trash. They bring everything to shoot at, including tying teddy bears to trees.
Approached cautiously from the south, nice peak. Javalinas in a wash on the way down.

Approach from west slope. Rain, petroglyphs. Watching clouds approach at eye level, being absorbed in them, and then emerging on the other side. Sweet.

Approach on northwest slope. Summit register indicated last visit March '02. Difficult descent down east face to saddle, then up to great Indian ruins. Picked up trail heading down from saddle to the north, then west up drainage and over ridge back to starting point.

Via north Col. With "Wandering Soles " hiking club. About 8 females, 4 males. Great summit, but looked for another hour and a half on the way down for a lost member. After taking off and not telling anyone, she was upset that we looked for her while she was back at the car waiting. Ogre's Den Rules.
