Some days I want to get out into the desert but I'm not really in the mood to hike all day. I just want to get into it, find a nice spot where no one comes along, eat some lunch, and read for a couple hours. Praying Hands Loop has become one of my favorites for this kind of day. Once you gain some elevation, the view is spectacular and you didn't kill yourself doing it. It didn't take you all day so you can find that perfect rock that fits your butt nicely and sit around as long as you want. I finally ran across this trail description today after doing this loop a few times and not knowing what to call it. I like doing this loop the opposite direction, though, for two reasons. The first is that the trail is easier to find going clockwise and the second is because I like doing the uphill when its more secluded. This way, when you reach the Treasure Loop (god, I wish it was called the Treasure Trail) where you're bound to see the Lost Dutchman crowds, its a quick shot down and out. Though, come June 3rd when the park closes this won't be a problem anymore and those benches after a steep section can be pretty nice. Also, today, I ran across a deer. We surprised each other and it bolted before I could get my camera out.

Today I wanted a nice spot to relax-- next week I'll be doing something a bit rougher!

Did an overnight trip out to the ranch. Man-- what a cool place. The orchards are blossoming, the creek flowing, and tons of neat old farm equipment. We thought we were going to get rain dumped on us but it only sprinkled for a few minutes. Then the unexpected happened-- snow! It was really awesome. We saw a little wildlife. There were a few rabbits and what we think were foxes but didn't get a close look. They could have been skunks, I guess, but they appeared too light in color. We sure smelled a skunk or two, though. We also felt bad for the European guy that had hiked all the way to the ranch after missing the turn off to the falls. We found him resting on a rock eating sushi. It was a fun one.

Today was beautiful. I started at the Crosscut TH and took the trail that takes you farther east. I'm not sure if it has a name but I haven't been able to find it. After a minor off trail jaunt, I made my way up to the Massacre Falls Loop and took that a good ways but didn't make it all the way to the falls. I figured it would be merely a trickle right now if anything and the cornish pasty I brought on the trail with me for lunch didn't turn out to be the wisest choice-- although, a delicious one at the time. So I decided to make my day a loop and worked my way back to the Treasure Loop in Lost Dutchman and then Jacob's Crosscut. It turned out to be really nice way to hike that area and Lost Dutchman State Park was unusually dead for a weekend. I saved my GPS track but its pretty sloppy due to my indecisiveness and I don't think I'll post it unless someone thinks differently. The wildflowers are in full bloom right now and it was pretty beautiful.

Did this trail for the first time and was super pleased. Ran into two other groups the whole trek and those were only in the first couple miles. Saw a really nice crested saguaro and the wildflowers were in bloom. Also-- lots of water. I recommend this hike. Keep watch, though, the trail sign mileage is really misleading-- don't trust it. Also, be prepared once you hit the Skunk Creek Trail. The nice little stroll you started with is over for a while!

I planned on taking the Dutchman Trail and heading up to the top of Black Top Mesa, but when I hit West Boulder Canyon there was so much water that I had to explore upstream for a while. I eventually found a really nice little tributary and followed that a little while until it was a perfect spot for lunch and sat around a bit relaxing. It was just one of those days and absolutely beautiful outside.

This hike is no joke... I mean seriously-- can I get a switchback? Reavis Falls is beautiful and worth every bit of effort!

Did part of the Massacre Falls loop via Crosscut. It was my first time on the trail and the day was awesome. I wasn't planning on doing any of those trails but First Water was packed with folks which seems to be the typical weekend there now, so I decided to check out something different. Next time I'll bring a friend and do the whole trek. I can't wait to get back!

water level at Bartlett Lake is pretty low right now. Not the prettiest or most interesting hike but nice to hike by water for a change.

Hiked this loop today with a couple friends. This is really a wonderful hike this time of year. Boulder Canyon has plenty of water flowing (not as much as last spring). Stream crossing and hopping across rocks keeps this one interesting. Lots and lots of cairns will show you where to cross and where the trail has disappeared to. The description calls this area "over cairned" but I found them extremely useful. I posted my GPS routes-- the first one for this hike! I'm glad to get to contribute to a site I use so often!

I helped lead a group of hikers up to fremont saddle for a writing workshop. Everyone had a good time, although we lost a couple hikers on the way up-- usually happens. This is the fourth hike we've done for work and they've all been pretty successful.

Great hike. Headed towards Black Top Mesa via Bull Pass to check things out. Didn't have enough time to get to the top but had fun exploring that direction for the first time.

Did a quick hike in to a nice swimming hole and camping spot. There seemed to be enough cairns to not get too lost. Also, a really beautiful meadow of wildflowers at the beginning of the trail. A nice pleasant trip.
