So sick of driving so far every weekend and I'm starting to really miss the desert. We got out for an evening hike. Lots of water in the Hackberry area-- and lots of bugs. We gotten eaten up. We saw a skunk, a rattlesnake, and a giant toad. Pleasant night with really nice temperatures. I recently got a new phone with better location services than my old one so I decided to try Route Scout. Route Scout is awesome.

Quick overnight with a friend and the dogs. We dropped into Bear Canyon from FR95 and headed downstream. There was lots of water the whole way. The fire didn't get too close to the bottom except for in a couple short spots. We hit the spot with the long swimmer and bypassed left. Quickly we decided we were ready to leave the canyon and figured since we were already a quarter of the way up, now would be a good time. I caught a very healthy coyote watching part of our ascent. We made it up to the ridge, worked our way cross country most of the way (with a bit of road), and hit 95 again. We headed over to Fred Haught and camped for the night at the ruins of Fred Haught Cabin.

We already planned on having a short hike out. We both wanted to get back to the valley fairly early. We bushwacked straight out of camp up to the ridge on our north and walked the roads back to the car. I was home by noon :D

I had never hiked this loop before and honestly had kind of low expectations. It turned out to be pretty nice. We had clouds, shade, and nice temps most of the day. 9L managed to get us a quarter mile off trail within 3/4 miles of hiking-- a rather impressive and mathematically complicated feat. Lily had plenty of water to play in along the way and even found some lilypads to cool her own Lily pads near. Kathy read the historical markers for the benefit of us all. Karl mocked the gods with beer in hand which immediately brought rain, thunder, and lightning for the remainder of our hike. Tell my mother I'm rejoining the church.

We did a nice easy backpack in Yellowstone while we were in the area. It was a beautiful campsite that came with millions of mosquitoes.

That 9L really knows how to put together a trip. This one had been in the works for a while and luckily Lee was already up that way and could join us. It was a heavy snow year and we'd been nervous for a while about if we could complete it or not. There were two spots we were worried about. Luckily, Hurricane Pass was no problem. The Paintbrush Divide ended up being intimidating but nothing that microspikes, ice-axes, and determination couldn't conquer. I would absolutely love to spend more time in the Grand Tetons. Its a beautiful range with so much character. I think we caught it at the absolutely perfect time. It was four days of snow and wildflowers.

Great hike today with the dog. I hiked up to Doyle saddle for lunch and then back down. Could see a storms in the distance. Lots of rain and traffic on the way back to Phoenix. Had a @Tortoise_Hiker sighting on the 17-- not sure who co-pilot for the day was.

Took a nice leisurely hike with Lily and a friend. We started on the ridge and took the old FR92 (closed to vehicles)all the way to Turkey Crossing and then headed back through Beaver Canyon. I've never stuck on 92 the entire way and was surprised at how difficult to follow it is for stretches and then out of nowhere you're on a full blown road again. The temperatures turned out much nicer than expected. It was overcast once the afternoon hit and we got a short and light chilly rain for just a few minutes. Beaver Canyon was beautiful as always. I had expected the fires may have driven more wildlife into this area so I was hopeful to see some animals. We saw a herd of about 30 elk on the ridge. They ran off once they saw us and then we would stumble upon them a couple more times. We finished just in time to watch some weather come in across the rim from the nice viewpoint just west of where we parked.

We had to get out of the Phoenix heat for the day so we headed up to Flag. There were only a couple cars at the TH when we arrived which was unexpected. We took Bear Jaw up to the Waterline and then headed over to the Inner Basin. There were a lot of people in the Inner Basin. Once in the Inner Basin, we cut over to the old road that heads up towards the Cirque. We took lunch at Bear Jaw Spring and then headed back. There was a little water flow near Bear Jaw Spring but I think it was just snow melt in one of the adjoining drainages. I think the spring itself get sucked into the pipes right at the source. We could notice some of the smoke from Kendrick on the way back down Bear Jaw but it wasn't too bad.

We all woke up and took our time. After breaking camp, we went our separate ways. John, Claire, Carrie, and I headed to Pivot Rock after Lee's recommendation. It was a nice easy going hike with plenty of water for the two dogs. It looks like it gets lots of ATV traffic but we didn't come across any. This nice little area has lots of road access. I need to look at a map more closely of the area.

Really beautiful day to be in WCC. We had a good sized group and a pack of dogs. We headed downstream for a while. Those dogs really had to work for this one. There were lots of swimmers for the mutts. After turning back upstream we went to check out Sundance. There weren't many people downstream but it seemed like everyone was camping upstream.

There were a lot of people camping down there including a very large group of scouts that were making their way out as we arrived. They left their fire hot and their toilet paper and waste that comes with it unburied. Maybe scout leaders need to be given a little training or a basic run down of LNT? I hate to see their reputations tarnished but honestly when I see a scout group they more often than not don't know what they're doing. It should be obvious that this is not an area appropriate for a huge group to camp not only because of the lack of space but also the impact in general. It would be a shame for this to be a day-use only area because people lack common sense.

I've done this loop or some version of this loop quite a few times. Its always awesome. There's plenty of water out there right now-- I don't think Lily ever had to go more than a mile and half without cooling her feet off.

Headed back up to Flagstaff. We planned on hiking to the summit a couple weeks ago but Lily's been sick so we didn't make it all the way up. We headed back this morning since she's on the mend. The lot was only about half full when we got there. We passed about 5 or 6 groups on the way up and made really good time. There were quite a few people and dogs lounging on the summit when we made it up. Everyone was pretty friendly and laying around on the helipad. I ran into an acquaintance up there who had lugged a 50 pound bag up as training for a big trip soon. She had carried 60 pounds up Wrightson the week before! My training for the Tetons this summer has been much less impressive. It was a beautiful day and it felt like it had been a while since I'd been on a summit.

I love this area more and more every time we explore it. We parked at the bottom of FR415 and dropped into the little canyon north of Rattlesnake Ridge. Its a little thick in parts but opens up into nice areas with lots of water. We took it all the way to Beaver Park and took Beaver Canyon north a while until we found a good spot to climb up to Turkey-Beaver Ridge. We headed cross country and utilized some of the old roads and finally dropped down into Turkey Creek. We headed south a bit and found a spot to climb back up the ridge. We headed back over towards Beaver Canyon and dropped back in near the power lines. From there, Chumley and 9L took the canyon just south of Rattlesnake Ridge for a bit and then bushwacked up to 415. I opted to take 415 the whole way. 415 drops into Beaver Park and I wanted to scout the condition of the road for possible future camping spots. I met back up with Chumley and 9L on the way back to the car. Lily and BrunoP had a great time with all the water but were ready for some napping on the drive home. Lily has been having some health problems lately which seem to be improving-- it was nice to see her having some fun.
