One of my most favorite hikes. The views of Weaver's Needle are awe inspiring.

This trail is one of eight designated trails in Estrella Mountain Park. You start off from the Rodeo Arena area, hike in 0.7 miles on the beginning of the Rainbow Valley Trail, and then do a 4.7-mile loop back to where you left off at the Rainbow Valley Trail. Following this trail back to the Rodeo Arena totals a 6.1-mile hike!

Nice hike, very little elevation gain/loss however. Can hear the noises of the raceway nearby as you're hiking!

One of the more fun memories I have from hiking. Went with two friends...I talked it down as being easy because of not having a lot of elevation changes, but didn't tell them about the total distance :)

One friend only brought a 16 oz bottle of water, and managed to ration it to himself for the entire trip, coming out at the trailhead with still a little bit of water. The other friend, in the last mile or two, kept begging us to leave him on the trail to die because he couldn't make it! It was a great memory (partly because he DID make it!). I ended up being the cheerleader/coach, saying "you can do it, just a little farther" for, um, a few hours. ;-)

Difficulty:     (of 5), mostly just because of distance

After camping on the mountain, getting rained on and having a skunk visitor in the night, we were ready to brave the mountain. We went as high as we could to the edge of the refuge area, and then celebrated with a great lunch at Casa Marana in Safford.

Hiked Flatiron with a girl I was interested in who said she was totally able to make it. She started having heart problems, and this usually quick hike took all day and into the evening. I remember being halfway down the mountain, watching the sun set over Phoenix, and thinking to myself, if I can just keep my eyes fixed on one building and its lights, then when it goes dark I can follow the lights. That didn't work. We got off the trail and cut our legs all up on cacti and other plants. I had an unused glowstick in my pack, and used that by holding it over my feet to prevent me from stepping off the mountain or something. We eventually made it back early/mid evening, a couple of miles away from the trailhead parking lot, and begged on the mercy of a lady coming home with a car full of groceries to give us a ride back to the parking lot! Lessons learned.

My first hike in Arizona...went with a cup of coffee, no water, and tennis shoes. Made it to the top, thanks to someone somewhere along the way leaving a gallon of water on the mountain that I found. Learned a lot that day!!

Started at 8:15am, submitted 11:30. Took 2:15 to get down.
