The best thing about trails after a good rain is no dust. The worst, mud. At least the mud wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Nice and cool out this morning and the trails weren't too busy either.

It's been a while since I've hiked the Little Pan loop and a Geocache was just listed along it, so off I went. The geocache is off the west side of the loop, so I went clockwise to reach it earlier in my hike instead of later.

Along the north end of the loop, it started sprinkling a bit, but nothing to get wet by. Below Cottonwood Gulch along the Agua Fria, I heard thunder. Water was running at the north crossing of the Agua Fria, but I was able to work my way across without getting my feet wet. The rain picked up a bit here and as I started climbing out of the gulch, I could see raindrops on the water. The thunder started picking up as I continued along the east side. Then, after crossing a wash and starting the longest climb of the loop, the rain came. I stopped and pulled out my umbrella and the rain cover for my pack. It was storming hard for a while and the wind picked up as I crossed the ridge when the climb leveled out.

Along the way down, I saw a small tortoise in the middle of the trail. The shell was probably 6" front to back and was clean and shiny from the rain.

The rain finally stopped as I neared the south end of the loop, so I closed my umbrella for the rest of the hike.

The east side of the loop could use some brushing as the catclaw is starting to encroach on the trail a bit. Nothing bad now, but it will be soon enough.

The mornings are awfully nice lately. Wish I had all morning to spend outside. So what do I do, walk fast and finish in my fastest time. Oh well.

During my walk, I was thinking how unusual it was to see as many rattlesnakes as I did in August and that I haven't seen any since.

1st trip
My route: I started at Tom's Thumb trailhead and took Tom's Thumb trail up to Tom's Thumb. From there, I back tracked to the East End trail and followed it down to the Windmill trail. I took Windmill trail to Coachwhip Trail, then to Pemberton Trail. Pemberton trail to Boulder Trail, to Marcus Landslide trail, and back to Tom's Thumb trailhead.

The day was really nice, temperatures were comfortable and there was a slight breeze. People weren't much of a problem. There were several on the way up to Tom's Thumb and on my way down from Tom's Thumb to the East End trail. After that, I saw only a handful of people until I was finishing up on the Marcus Landslide trail.

Tom's Thumb trail is more like a path for most of it. It's all decomposed granite and is wider and smoothed. I actually wished it was rougher as it was too groomed for my taste.

Going down East End trail was interesting as the tread changed composition at least three times. It started with the decomposed granite, switched to some other type of rock, then sandstone. I don't pretend to be a geologist, so that's the depth of my take.

Once on the Windmill trail, things were fairly level and fast when the tread was good. Even when the tread wasn't as good, it was still fairly easy to keep walking with purpose.

There is a ramada and picnic table at the Coachwhip / Pemberton junction. I stopped there and had a Gatorade. There's a bike stand, and tools for cyclists. There're also some prayer flags and plaques with interesting verse in the ramada. It was a good place to stop for a few minutes.

The Marcus Landslide trail is an interpretive trail and is smooth and wide like the Tom's Thumb trail. By then I was hungry and just wanted to finish so I mostly just cruised by the signs.

Lots of trees blown down walking along the road to the trail after yesterday's storm. What a mess. It was nice out though; the temps were great. The trail was pretty quiet, a nice change from yesterday.

Nice day for a walk. It was busier up the Ridgeline than I expected.

I wanted to go farther today but had an emergency work meeting scheduled for 10.

Pretty nice day and I was on the jam so made really good time. Climbing up the Ridgeline trail, I passed two ladies, and they said I was making them look bad. I replied, no, you're making me look good. Ha.

I wasn't planning on walking this, but I figured I probably would end up walking it, and I did. This is called Scenic Ridge, for a series of six geocaches called Scenic Ridge #x along this two-track road along a ridge off of Scenic Loop Road. Got that? I was riding my Honda dualsport and when I arrived at the road up to the ridge, I decided my riding skills aren't what is needed to make it up the hill onto the ridge so I parked the bike, shed my riding gear and walked.

It really was a nice walk along a scenic ridge and I enjoyed the excursion finding the six caches. Two were new, so I was the first finder for them. That's really the reason I was out here to start with.

The walking was easy, like on a nice trail except for the initial ascent onto the ridge, where the road was fairly steep with a lot of loose sand and gravel with some large ruts. I had the place to myself as I saw nobody else in the area.

I keep thinking I should go somewhere else to hike but it seems like such a hassle for a few hours walk. So I keep walking the same place out my front door. I know almost every rock. ](*,)
