I decided to take advantage of the free park admissions for National Public Lands day. I've been meaning to head down Grandview trail and check out Cave of the Domes for years since a buddy of mine hid Wherigo Geocache, Cave of the Domes. Wherigo is like a location based video game played on a Wherigo enabled GPS device. Basically, I had to go down to the cave, then answer some questions at specific locations to calculate the final coordinates for the geocache, which is located outside the park.

Left my house a bit past 6 this morning, was on trail a bit past 10. The weather was nice with a bit of a breeze. Lots of people at the Grandview Point Lookout/trailhead. Most were wearing pants and sweatshirts, I was in my shorts and sandals. Go figure. The trail is steep, so it was more work going down than anticipated. Passed a group of lady backpackers on the way down and a couple other people coming out after a night below.

Interesting trail work, especially above the Coconino Saddle with the cribs holding the trail off the edge. That and the "cobblestone" tread made for a steep descent and a lung/thigh buster on the egress.

Had a good laugh once I reached the mesa with the signs pointing to Page Springs directing one to the Radioactive area to keep away from.

I spent about a half hour at the cave. I didn't go too far in as I didn't feel like crawling around in all the dust. Especially with drop off between where I got to and where I would have gone. I mucked a shoulder up the other day and really was avoiding having to stress it climbing around. I did enjoy seeing some popcorn and bacon and a whole slew of handprints above. It's always a question of how old they are. Are they from indigenous people, miners, or others?

After the cave, I went back to the camping area near the rock cabin ruin and started answering the Wherigo questions. Got the questions answered and went back out and up to Grandview Point. That was tough, I was soaking wet from sweat at the top.

After completing the Grandview Trail - Cave of the Domes, I had to actually find the Cave of the Domes geocache, so off to the Grandview Tower where I hiked the Vishnu trail out to the Vishnu Overlook, then took the return where the trail picked up the AZT and finished back at the tower. Somewhere along the way (at the loop junction), I went off the trail a bit and found the cache (I deleted that part of the route).

The Vishnu trail is signed and marked and makes a nice walk. The trail starts under the tower. It is well marked with trail signs and cairns. The tread is reasonably good the whole way and is an easy grade throughout. Something that was appreciated after my slog up the Grandview Trail.

Once I found the cache, I had a beer on the way back to my truck. It was about the perfect 12oz distance. :D

Took Monday off because it was pouring rain and I was tired from the weekend. Took yesterday off because I didn't want to deal with muddy trail and the humidity. Felt fine today. It was not hot but humid.

Since the mornings are getting nice, I decided to head out on the Black Canyon Trail today. Got on trail a bit past seven and finished quarter of noon. I hiked from Black Canyon City trailhead to Soap Creek. I took a short break at Soap Creek, then turned back. Originally I was thinking of heading to Black Canyon Creek but it was starting to warm up and I didn't feel like dealing with the warmer afternoon; it was hot enough when I finished. Trail was fine though there is some cat claw that could be trimmed back in places, especially around the Agua Fria and near the northern end of my route. A lot of brush has grown up around the Agua Fria since the last time I was there. That made getting through a bit of a pita. It was muddy too. Whatever, the rest of the trail was fun walking.

Left calf still tight especially on the first climb. It was cooler out this morning, acutally pretty nice.

Left calf still tight and sore but doesn't really bother me when I walk. Maybe some since I'm walking slower than normal?

Left calf has been sore and tight since Sunday evening. That's why I didn't walk yesterday and took it easy today. Seemed okay once I got going and it warmed up.

The plan was to find three geocaches. We took the "Sunset Point to Agua Fria" trail to the Agua Fria, then travelled south on the Agua Fria to near Lousy Canyon where we found the third cache and turned around and headed back out.

The trail was surprisingly good. Someone or some group has been giving it some love. There are reasonable cairns and flagging along it. Bushes, trees, and cacti have been trimmed back. It was enjoyable to walk along.

On the way down, we stopped and I hung off a rock wall to find the first cache. After that we celebrated with a beer. Once we reached the river, I climbed the hill across the way to find the second cache. Lots of staghorn cholla and other brush made the ascent (and descent) tricky. Near the bottom, on the way down, a rattler buzzed at me. I had to go around some brush so wasn't too concerned. Went around the brush and it started buzzing again. I wasn't even near it at first but went to check it out, a nice Black Tail. It must be used to a secluded life because it was really grumpy and kept buzzing for the longest time, even after I was well away from it.

Next we followed the river bed downstream. We left the riverbed to check out an abandoned corral. There was a cabin nearby but we skipped that. That might be on the agenda once it cools off some more. We got back on the riverbed and followed it to the last geocache on our list. There was a lot of rock hopping and going around brush. The usual fair for riverbed walking. At least there was no water flowing or it would have been extremely difficult. We were the first to find this geocache and there was a nice shady spot nearby where we celebrated with another beer. After that it was late in the morning and we decided it was time to scoot back up onto the mesa.

1st trip
Decided to do something different this morning so up early and to Piestewa Peak. Started walking about quarter past five when there was barely enough light to figure out where I was going. Summitted Piestewa Peak with some friends, one of which placed a flag for 911. We stayed at the top for over 50 minutes before heading back down. On the way down, saw and talked to Joe for a quick hello - Yes, it is different that I wasn't at Deem Hills or the BCT. On the way down took the Circumference trail and when I got to the end of the road parking lot, I decided to find a couple of nearby geocaches so took the 8B and then the Mohave Ridgeline to the Peak. My legs where tired by then. Ugh.

I had really good weather today. It was very nice with a refreshing breeze on the Piestewa summit, then the circumference trail was mostly in the shade. It only started to get warm at the end climbing up to the Mojave Ridgeline and then back down.
