My girlfriend and I just finished the Tour of the White Mountains the day before so we were looking for something short to stretch the legs. "A" mountain was it, Once we got to the top it poured down rain so that was fun.

Hike to the crack on Labor Day weekend, say what? Yep that's how we do it, crowds and all. It was a good time. This one has been on the list for a while, I bailed on it earlier in the summer because I felt it was too hot, but this past weekend was great. Our group arrived at the parking lot at 8:50am and I'm pretty sure we took the last 2 parking spots. trail was pretty easy going. None of our group did any cliff jumping, but there was plenty of others there doing it to keep everyone entertained. Nothing too crazy other than one guy who jumped the crack, yeah from one side of the canyon to the other, I don't recommend. :) The water was crystal clear, it was nice since the last two water hikes (ellison cascades, sycamore creek) both were brown. We found a nice large rock that served us well as a resting/eating spot in the shade of the trees. All in all, it was a good day.

This was the second day of our Flagstaff weekend and we wanted to find somewhere new to us to ride the bikes. The drive out here was nice, it was cloudy all morning, and the area, at least on this day, was the opposite of crowded. The trails here are both new, and not well used so in some areas they are pretty faint, but still easy to follow. we also ran into a bunch of sheep on FR231 on our way out.

This was day 1 of our Flagstaff weekend. My girlfriend really likes riding out here. We timed it just right as the downpour came just as we left.

Last year after a camping trip we stopped at the Water Wheel day use area and decided to check things out. We hiked down to the confluence and even up Ellison creek a ways, but never found the famous Log.
Soon after we got back, I looked it up and realized how close we were that we decided some day to go back.
Last weekend we went back and we made it to the Log. :) We did it a little differently this time, we followed the directions on here starting at second crossing. On the way out to the falls, we hiked along the east verde and then along ellison creek. Lot's of water crossings here, both my girlfriend and I fell in at one point, so most of the hiking was done soaking wet. I was lucky that both my phone and Go Pro survived. I need something more grippy on the wet rocks than my "mandals" :) It was a fun day.
At the falls we hung out for quite a while. there was a good amount of people there, but not too much. I know someone who went the day before and said it was over crowded, we do most of our stuff on Sundays instead of Saturdays and I think that helps with the crowds.
On the way out, climbed up to the road and brought road/trail back to second crossing as noted here as the official route.

Something I noticed, we got there somewhat early and there was 2 cars in the second crossing parking lot. I expected it to be full when we left around noon, but there was still maybe only 5 cars there and some of those were fisherman there under the bridge. On the drive out the water wheel area was packed, cars were parked in the street on both sides, it was really crowded. I guess my point is that it seems like most people don't know about the second crossing area and it would be the preferred location to start/stop at.
Also, the parking fee is now $8, I think I read on here it had said $6, #inflation.

I was in Prescott for the weekend for my Neice's wedding. I had my girlfriend, my mom, and my aunt with me and we had a a little bit of time before we headed back home to check out Lynx Lake. We did the lake shore trail, well part of it, but neough to find a nice spot along the shore and chill for a while.

Was looking for a creek type hike that was new to me. This one seemed to fit the bill. We did the portion out the the swimming hole, cliff jumping area at about 2 miles in. nice spot for lunch and just hanging out at the creek. While there were some other people there it was not overly crowded like I've experienced at other creek/springs type hikes. The water was pretty brown compared to pictures I've seen of the area. I will certainly add this to the list for return trips.

During our Mighty Five trip, we took some time to do a few things that were not national park related. One of them was doing the Gemini Bridges "Jeep" trail. My excuse was that this was the scenic way into town from Canyonlands. We did this backwards from most, starting on 313 and bringing it into 191. I actually think this is the better way because you get the boring dirt road section out of the way first, then you end with the cool shelf road. My truck had no problem with this trail, not sure I would have needed 4wd, but you for sure need high clearance. It's pretty tame by Moab standards I could see the wash crossing being a different story if it had been rainy.

The Hike: The hike to the bridges is short, probably a mile round trip at best. The BLM has a parking area and a descriptive sign. The bridges are pretty cool. at first it seems just like a hole in the ground but once you get close the bridges come into view. You will see a trail down under the bridges, it is not accessed from here, there is another road and hike that will get you there.

With our Mighty Five trip complete, we took an extra day in Moab to do Moaby things. In the morning we secured a couple mountain bikes and headed out to the Brands Trail, then in the afternoon we did Fins N Things. I originally wanted to do Elephant Hill in the Needles district, but we decided it was too far, would have taken all day and we wouldn't have had time for the bikes. Even though I still want to do Elephant Hill sometime in the future, I think Fins and Things was a good choice us.

Fins N Things is described as pure Moab. This trail has a mix of Slick rock and sand. The highlight of this trail is the steep ups and downs. There are sections where you drive across "fins" and can be very scenic. Its located in the Samd Flats recreation area.

This is part of our Mighty Five Trip 2016. We did 5 parks in 5 days in Utah.

Day 5: Arches National Park. Having already been to Arches we limited ourselves here. The interesting thing is the last time we were at Arches I felt like we did every tail except delicate Arch. that is the craziest thing ever! So that what we did this time. We got to the park somewhat early and headed straight to the trail head. Still had to wait for parking... It was really heating up this day and they had heat warning signs everywhere. I liked this trail, I liked hiking on the slick rock, I like how its cut into the side, I like how you round the corner and then boom, the arch comes into sight. We really enjoyed this, as you can see from the pictures, it was plenty crowded, we were not able to get an arch picture without a stranger in it. still good times though.

On our way back there was a ranger talking with a couple, the lady was sitting on the ground, she was giving her water. They were on their way up, but the ranger was suggesting they turn back. When we got back to the trail head there was another ranger who had set up 3 igloo coolers that I'm sure were full of water so people could fill up. A person had flagged her over and we noticed there was an older couple, the guy was sitting on the ground next to his car, he looked really red. The woman was in the bushes puking. Another hiker who had finished at the same time of us told us we had just ran across another couple who he had to empty his camelback with what he had left to give them some water, they were out. I have a feeling it was a long day for some people that day.

Day 4: Canyonlands National Park. day 4 we left Capitol Reef and made our way to Canyonlands. We had the next few days booked in Moab so our Canyonlands visit was in the Island in the Sky District. Our first stop was the visitors center where we again made some sandwiches in the truck and had lunch. This is when we realized it was 104* and that this was our hottest spot yet on the trip. We headed out to Mesa Arch because well, I think that is the one thing you are supposed to do here, a can't miss. It was good. The views that you can frame with the arch are awesome. It takes a while to get a view without people in the way but it does clear up for a few minutes here and there. This short hike can be done as a loop which gives you a change of scenery on the way back.

Day 4: Canyonlands National Park. Our next stop in Canyonlands was Grandview rim trail. This was a good one. a pretty easy going hike along the slick rock on the rim of the canyon. At a certain point the trail crosses over the "island" and you are now walking on the other side rim. You get great views all around. It also makes me want to plan a white rim overnight trip at some point.

Day 3; Capitol Reef National Park. First I'll say that Fruita is a nice place to spend some time. We checked out the nature center, there are several historic buildings, they also have a nice park area that is good for a lunch picnic. After lunch we went back to the visitor's center to hike on Sulphur Creek. Some clouds rolled in so it helped with the sun on this one. The hike is easy and since you wander in and out of the creek several times it keeps you cool. We did the shorter version of this starting at the visitor's center and heading out to the first waterfall. Spent some time hanging out there.

This is part of our Mighty Five trip 2016. We did 5 parks in 5 days in Utah.

Day 3: Capitol Reef National park. While checking out the historic sites in and around Fruita, we had lunch at the nice little park there next to the nature center. We then drove out to the Gifford Homestead for some homemade cookies. there was quite the crowd there getting pies. After our snack we headed out on the Scenic drive. The first 10 miles are paved. I forgot to stop and get a guide, but its also available online if you want to pull it up on a mobile device while out there. We checked out some of the side roads to trail heads, but we were running at the end of the day so we didn't want to start any new trails. At the end of the road we took the "high Clearance" Pleasant Creek road out to the old ranch. There also appears to be some secret NPS builds out that way. ;) We crossed the creek to South Draw road. This is supposed to be where the $wd required section begins. We didn't go too far since again we were short on time, it appears to be pretty sandy in some spots.

I will also mention this here as well. We stayed at the Capitol Reef resort this eveing. We booked a Teepee, that's right a Teepee. This was pretty cool. The Teepee itself is pretty nice, its got electricity and a TV and air conditioning. Everything your room would have, but its way cooler cause it's a Teepee. The part I liked best was in the evening sitting in the chairs outside the Teepee and watching the sunset over the red rocks. It was really cool.

Day 3: Capitol Reef National Park. day 3 started with us leaving Bryce Canyon and driving to Capitol Reef via Scenic route 12. It was scenic. That road takes you through quite a few different landscapes and they are all great.
Once arriving at Capital reef we made Hickman Bridge our first stop. It was warm on the climb up with no clouds to help fight off the sun. However still a great hike and the bridge was nice, provided some shade too. :)

This was part of Mighty Five trip 2016. We completed 5 parks in 5 days in Utah.

Day 2 was Bryce Canyon National Park. This was our first time to Bryce and it was great. We started out doing the Navajo Loop tied in with Queens Garden. I had heard this referred to as the best 3 mile hike out there and I have to agree with that. We went down the Wall street section and then came up Queens Garden and connected them with the Rim trail. We did this early, but much of the trail was in the shade still. Found the crowds here to be much smaller than in Zion. I am excited to go back here some day. We stayed the night here again in Bryce.
