It's hard to find the right words to describe this adventure - it's one I will definitely never forget. Started out at 4am, well-prepared & equipped with ice axes and microspikes. Had a beautiful full moon to light the way for the first few miles. Onward we went, past miles of peaks and snow and endless switchbacks. Originally the plan had been to do the Mountaineer's Route but the snow conditions are still pretty bad so we stuck to main trail instead -- we lucked out and only had a few sketchy/exposed snowy spots to traverse.
The views were AMAZING! The mountains and peaks of the sierra nevada... so incredibly beautiful. I felt like I was a dream and could hardly believe what I was seeing, but perhaps that was the effects of the altitude setting in? We all experienced some level of altitude sickness but everyone was able to make it to the summit. Those last 1000' feet were pretty hard, I had to dig deep to follow the voice inside my head that kept saying "KEEP GOING" when I really just wanted to turn around. At the summit, a random fellow hiker exclaimed "I am soooo freaking happy to be up here!!" with a huge smile on his face... me too, I yelled back, as I was feeling the exact same elation up there.
This mountain has been on my life "to do" list for awhile and it feels great to have accomplished it. I could not have asked for a better group to hike with (Ben, Kevin & Wendy), it was an all-around great adventure in an incredibly beautiful place! |
