Daylight is just barely stretched out long enough to allow a quick hike after work. Arrived at Meridian TH and started hike up to saddle at 5:40pm. Reached saddle in 28:02. Rested up top for 7 minutes then started back the same way. 25 minutes back to the trailhead with little available light remaining. I had a headlamp stowed away, but did not need it.

NOTE: Current PB for this route is from April 2015. 27:25 up, 21:40 down; Total 49:05

Took a back road hike down a side forest road off of the main Auger Canyon Rd. Made it a quick out and back before heading back home for the day.

On my December trip to the falls, the creek and waterfall was completely frozen over with the water still running underneath. Temps have been higher over the last couple weeks. Creek is still frozen in most areas, but not as much as last visit. Holes in the ice around the waterfall area made for some better photo ops. Instead of returning along the creek, I made my way about 1/3 up the mountain to the west to check out some of the remaining snowfall. Snow is patchy, about 50% snow covered and 50% grassy, and just a few inches deep.

Anna and I met up with friends Pete and Chelsea at Picacho. Cold day with expectes high of 51. Everyone enjoyed the route. Windy up top and didnt hang out long. We got back and skipped the DQ stop. As soon as we hit the highway, it started to rain. We got out just on time.

Arrived at Meridian TH shortly after 7am. Been feeling the holiday yucks, so plan was to hike to the saddle and back for total of 4 miles. Felt good upon approaching the saddle. Guess I just needed to get moving. Decided to continue on and complete the 8 mile loop. Not my best results, but a pretty strong outing consider I've been a little light on my hiking and exercise lately.

1st hike of the New Year. Did this one family style with my wife, Anna, and our two boys Justin and Chris. We drove out to Picacho Peak and started our hike around 9am. This is probably the toughest hike my wife has ever done. Plan was to allow the boys to continue up to the top while I hang back with her and see how far she can get.

We ended up hiking as a group the entire way. With some positive mindsets, teamwork and moral support we all made it to the summit together. We enjoyed our time up top, eating snacks, taking in the sights and snapping a few photos. Anna knew the fun was not over and it was time to make our way down. Of course, the down, includes a nice long section of "up." Anna pushed through the last climb and soon we were at the saddle. Its all down hill from there. I didn't log a total time, but I believe we finished somewhere around 3.5 hours from when we started.

We rewarded ourselves with some french fries and ice cream at the DQ. Justin a vanilla shake, Chris a blizzard and I went with my DQ favorite, cherry-dipped cone. I hear its a Picacho Peak hikers choice. :D

Spent a few hours in this canyon. Saw a pack of coatimundi and a whole mess of turkey on the approach to the trailhead. Several Javelina on the way out. Fall color has not yet peaked in the Aravaipa-Turkey Creek area. It has been unusually warm. Maples in Oak Grove still mostly green. Plenty of yellows and oranges among the sycamore and other varieties. Returned to the trail to find yet another flat tire. Getting to be epidemic.

I just really like the geology in this area. I need to spend more time exploring around here. Cool cool cool. After hiking into Oak Grove Canyon, drove over to this part of Upper Turkey Creek. Got there kind of late after changing a flat tire, so time was limited.

Counter-clockwise from Meridian TH. Woke up early and started my hustle up the mountain in the dark. Headlamp off at about 1.5 mile mark.

3.6 mph average after mile 2
3.8 mph after mile 3
4.0 mph after mile 4
4.2 mph after mile 5
4.4 mph after mile 6, then started running out of steam.
4.4 mph after 7 and 7.6. No more gas in the tank.

Just 50 seconds off my best, so can't complain. Need to start hitting this loop a little more often.

Started at Lost Ductchman Park from the Treasure Loop TH out of the Saguaro parking lot. Followed Treasure Loop to Praying Hands then continued along the back side of the mountain towards the first drainage that begins ascending towards 5024 from the North East. Followed the drainage to the finger spire, then began the off-trail ascent to the south. Continued up towards the cliffs and hoodoos that surround 5024. Reached the peak in 2hrs, 25 mins. Joined 3 others who were already up top before me. Took a break as they began their way down. Finished up by returning down Siphon Draw and working my way through the crowds.

Let me start by saying, "There is nothing about this trail that I would consider 'well-maintained." The trail to Wildcat Canyon is overgrown with catclaw among other plants. I'm glad I brought my hiking stick. I used the stick often to push catclaw and branches out of the way. Still, by the end of the day, my arms looked like they were on the losing end of a cat fight. Other than being a little warm, my decision to wear long pants paid off.

I left Miles Trailhead around 7:30am with the intent to find Wildcat Canyon and then veer off-trail towards peak 4576 to look at a hilltop fort ruin. Great 360 degree views (and 4g cell coverage) from the top of 4576. The ruin wall looked smaller than I had expected. I had previously located this site while poking around on Google Earth. Anyone camped out on this hilltop would have had a clear line of sight towards the Pinto Peak ruins, Circlestone and the high point of the Supes, Mound Mountain.

I kept my eyes peeled for artifacts, pottery, arrowheads, etc. Did not find any. I took a few pics at the top, ate an apple, then made my way back down.

This off-trail venture mixed with the sun exposure, and less than adequate nutrition and water supply, really ended up kicking the :pk: pumpkin out of me. I was happy to finally reach my vehicle, only to find the front driver side tire completely flat. I was wiped out. I took a few moments to rest, and drink some water from my backup jug (I always keep a 3 gallon jug of water in my Tahoe). I changed the tire and was on my way home. Made a quick stop for a sub sandwich at DeMarco's in Superior. Good call. The pizza and pasta looked delicious as well. I wanted to order one of everything, but settled for the sub.

A compilation of my trip to Alberta/B.C. Canada. We toured the areas of Canmore, Banff, Jasper, Yoho and enjoyed a scenic drive down the Icefield's Parkway.

We visited many memorable locations including Lake Louise, Lake Agnes, Johnston Canyon, Mistaya Canyon (my favorite), The Three Sisters, Emerald Lake and several others.

The photo ops were endless. Amazing pictures sometimes just sticking the camera out an open car window. I look forward to a return to this area.

Met up with my friend Todd to knockout this ridge line loop. The approach towards the mountain is fairly flat and fast as you head due east. As we neared the mountain, we spooked a mule deer out of its hiding spot. I missed my usual turn up the mountain, but found another spot to climb up towards the ridge line. It was a little sketchier, but we made it, nonetheless. As we worked the ridge line, we came across a solo mule deer. Most likely the same one.

This is a fun and challenging ridge line. If you like Pass Mountain ridge line, but prefer something that offers more scrambling and rock climbing, then you should get up on this ridge line that is East of Pass.

After reaching the highest peak (Peak 3108) we continued towards the final peak which has a cairned route down to Bulldog Saddle. We hiked back to the Meridian TH from there.

Met with my friend, Brian and drove to Wind Cave TH. Completed this hike with bonus obstacles. Just as we arrived at the Wind Cave sign right of the cave, a small coiled rattlesnake on the edge of the trail gave a little warning. Continued on towards the ridge line. The trail follows a gap between some large boulders. The early morning light was still a bit dim. Right in the center of the gap was a mass of bees. Don't know if it was a hive or a temporary hang out. By the time I realized it was a mass of bees, I already had the upward and forward momentum to just keep moving. As I passed, I could hear the swarm starting to hum. How close did I come? I could have reached forward and touched them. As the swarm came alive, Brian decided on a different route. Good idea. I had to deal with one rogue bee who continued to harass my progress up the mountain. I continued moving further up and soon it left me alone. We both made it to the top unstung.

Next we started our way across the ridge line which is annoyingly covered with white direction markers. If you can't figure out where the ridge line is without markers, then you probably should stay at home on your couch. You don't belong in the wilderness.

The thing about following someone else's white paint spots is that you don't exactly know where it will lead you. Follow these ones for too long and you will likely end up short of completing the ridge line hike. At one point, I noticed the white paint spots leading down and to the left. We did not follow them. I can only assume that someone has created another way down around mid way? So, I guess if you are into doing 1/2 a hike, while telling people you did the whole thing, then perhaps this is the route for you.

Anyway, we continued past the ugly white paint and got back to the little bit of route-finding that actually makes this hike fun. We took a route that drops off the ridge line to the left. The ridge line led down to a wash that took us to the busy Pass Mtn Loop which we followed back to the trailhead.

5:20am start from 1st Water TH. First rattlesnake about 20 minutes in. I caught sight of it coiled up beneath me as I stepped right over it. That will get your heart racing. My friend, Brian, opted to go around through some bushes. It never moved. I guess it wasn't ready to start its day yet. 75 degrees at the trail head, so maybe it prefers warmer temps. Saw the 2nd rattler (a much fatter one) as we got close to approaching the Hackberry Spring area. This one was awake, locked and loaded. When we came around the corner, it started rattling. I cut immediately to my right, away from the sound. Once I got my bearings of his position, I walked back to where Brian was standing. The snake was in its upright strike position. With the exception of its rattle and tongue, the snake was frozen in this position. We took heed to the warning and after admiring its stance for a few moments we moved on toward the Hackberry.

No more snakes after that. We arrived back at the trail head with no extra holes in our skin.
