No time today. Took a photographer hobbyist friend out to hwy 88 th. Showed him some photo spots for sunrise, then left him to do his thing. I hiked to the Hands, hin out a few minutes then returned the same way.

Met with my friend, Brian and drove to Wind Cave TH. Completed this hike with bonus obstacles. Just as we arrived at the Wind Cave sign right of the cave, a small coiled rattlesnake on the edge of the trail gave a little warning. Continued on towards the ridge line. The trail follows a gap between some large boulders. The early morning light was still a bit dim. Right in the center of the gap was a mass of bees. Don't know if it was a hive or a temporary hang out. By the time I realized it was a mass of bees, I already had the upward and forward momentum to just keep moving. As I passed, I could hear the swarm starting to hum. How close did I come? I could have reached forward and touched them. As the swarm came alive, Brian decided on a different route. Good idea. I had to deal with one rogue bee who continued to harass my progress up the mountain. I continued moving further up and soon it left me alone. We both made it to the top unstung.

Next we started our way across the ridge line which is annoyingly covered with white direction markers. If you can't figure out where the ridge line is without markers, then you probably should stay at home on your couch. You don't belong in the wilderness.

The thing about following someone else's white paint spots is that you don't exactly know where it will lead you. Follow these ones for too long and you will likely end up short of completing the ridge line hike. At one point, I noticed the white paint spots leading down and to the left. We did not follow them. I can only assume that someone has created another way down around mid way? So, I guess if you are into doing 1/2 a hike, while telling people you did the whole thing, then perhaps this is the route for you.

Anyway, we continued past the ugly white paint and got back to the little bit of route-finding that actually makes this hike fun. We took a route that drops off the ridge line to the left. The ridge line led down to a wash that took us to the busy Pass Mtn Loop which we followed back to the trailhead.

5:20am start from 1st Water TH. First rattlesnake about 20 minutes in. I caught sight of it coiled up beneath me as I stepped right over it. That will get your heart racing. My friend, Brian, opted to go around through some bushes. It never moved. I guess it wasn't ready to start its day yet. 75 degrees at the trail head, so maybe it prefers warmer temps. Saw the 2nd rattler (a much fatter one) as we got close to approaching the Hackberry Spring area. This one was awake, locked and loaded. When we came around the corner, it started rattling. I cut immediately to my right, away from the sound. Once I got my bearings of his position, I walked back to where Brian was standing. The snake was in its upright strike position. With the exception of its rattle and tongue, the snake was frozen in this position. We took heed to the warning and after admiring its stance for a few moments we moved on toward the Hackberry.

No more snakes after that. We arrived back at the trail head with no extra holes in our skin.

My nephew Marco is in town from Dubai. He wantes to do Flatiron at night. So we set out on a Friday night to get it done. He has done Flatiron once before and we also had climbed Mt Etna in Sicily together. We started at Dutchman around 6pm and reached the summit at 8:15. We watched a distant lightning show and snacked a bit. Saw a rattlesnake and a couple tarantulas along the way. Returned to the trailhead at 10:10pm.

Early put in at Sheeps Crossing (the bridge). Take out at Phon D Sutton. Wrapped up this trip before 7:30am. Cool muggy weather, wild horses, and the water level was very low. Only about 400cfs. Whats up with that. Seems a little low for tubing season.

Another day in the loop. Cool and muggy morning. Felt drained today and held a much slower pace.

Started at 5:50am. Mule deer everywhere I turned. Two does, then two does and a buck, then a herd of 6 does. Also came across several red furry bugs (red velvet mites or rain bugs). Cool temp, but very muggy.

Warm and muggy approach from Hwy 88 Trailhead to Praying Hands. Didn't feel as bad coming down. Not sure if a breeze picked up, or maybe just that I'm not breathing (gasping) for air on the downhill.

Flatiron via Hwy 88 Trailhead off First Water Rd. I've done the reverse FI from this location. This was my first attempt connecting with the traditional route up Siphon Draw and then continuing up to FI. Temp was 76 degrees at 5:25am. Saw a couple deer within the first mile. It took about 20 minutes to reach Siphon. From there, it was all the usual Siphon.

Passed two hikers short of the bowl. Then caught up with a group of 6 just above the bowl. One of the 6 was puking and ended up turning around along with one of the others. The other 4 continued on. I saw them reach the top after I had taken my break and was coming back down. About 15 hikers on the Siphon in total.

It started feeling warm as I approached the bowl. Almost entirely in the shade up to this point. As I got down past the gatekeeper, I ventured into total exposed sunlight for the rest of the hike. I maintained a steady fast walking pace and the heat was not an issue. Arrived back at the trailhead with plenty of water left over. 95 degrees at 9am when I finished.

Did the full loop today fron Meridian TH. Forgot my headlamp, so started out a little slow, but gained steam right up until the finish.

2.7mph after 1 mile.
3.0mph after 2 miles (saddle)
3.3mph after 3 miles
3.6mph after 4 miles
3.9mph after 6 miles
4.3mph final average speed.

The best I've ever run this loop was 1:42 back in 2010. Good to know that after 7 years, I can still hang with my former self.

Play day at Fossil Creek. Assembled 11 people into 3 cars and with permits in hand we went to Fossil Creek. We found ourselves a nice swimming hole and spent most of our time lounging, swimming, diving, etc. We split up into a few different groups and explored different parts of the creek. Temp peaked around 105 degrees, but the water was nice and cold.

On the trail at 4:42am. 48:30 from TH to falls. Took an 18 minute break then started back. 35:30 on the return. Best part was running into Mountain Man Jack at the trailhead. We chatted and told stories for awhile then it was off to work for me. Jack just smiled when I mentioned the words "going to work."

Several months ago I was poking around Google Earth and found what appeared to be a man made structure at the edge of a cliff. Never got the chance to investigate until now. The temps dropped a bit and I got some much appreciated cool winds.

My 100% off trail adventure started when I woke up at 3:20am. Feet on the ground about 6am. I started working my way up a dry wash. Pretty easy going boulder hopping and occasional bushwhack.

Wash got thick with vegetation as I approached a spring. I moved up out of the wash to go around, but ended up skirting a ridge to my right. Bad idea. I found myself traversing through loose scree on a steep angle that made progress slow.

Headed towards some spires. Another bad idea. Got myself into some sketchy climbs and traverses. Finally cleared the tough stuff then found myself on an easy but steep final approch towards the cliffs up ahead.

In retrospect came in too high. Should have stayed low and worked my way to the west face before reaching the cliffy stuff. Oh well. More climbing and bushwhacking. It looks like I got into a fight with a wildcat. Scratches all over.

Didn't see the structure until I was practically standing next to it. Potsherds everywhere. This was definitely ruins as I had theorized from my google earth discovery.

Spent some time up there poking around, and looking for ancient stuff. I was in the shade of the cliffs the entire time. Air was breezy and cool.

Started my descent. Not easy. Loose ground. Boulders cutting loose and rolling below me. It was slow going. Lots of problem solving. I found a better route back down into the wash. It was steep and required lots of big moves and steps, but I knew travel would be quick once I hit that wash.

It had taken over 2 hours to go up. Ended up taking 1:15 to get back down. Great offtrail adventure with some cool ruins that made me think, "what were they doing up there. And, why all the pottery?"

The reverse route has become my preferred way to tackle 5024. Less traffic, as in zero. Its more work, but worth it. This was my first time completing the loop from hwy 88 TH. Up to Praying Hands, up to 5024, down Siphon (back to the crowds) and then wrap around the mountain and back to 88.

Start time 4:45am. Ran a little long, finishing up at 9:30am. Could feel the heat, thats for sure. Of course, the heat doesn't seem to stop the 8am crowd just getting started up Siphon. Nuts!

5:20am start at First Water TH for counter-clockwise loop. Arrived at junction of Second Water and Black Mesa to a horrible smell. A dead dog with a chain style collar was on the ground, just off the side of the trail. The dog was so bloated that it looked more like a large pig. We tried to imagine how someone's pet died out here. Did someone take it on a hike in extreme heat? Had the dog run loose, got lost and then the owners gave up? Why did the dog appear to be untouched by predators, vultures, etc? How long had it been here?

We continued on through Garden Valley and finished our hike a few minutes past 6:30am.
