My sister and brother in law are in town. I introduced my brother in law to the Salt River. We put kayaks on the water at 5:15am, watched a red and blue sunrise and continued forward at a steady pace. Got soaked at Pinball Alley. Plenty of horses all along the route made for many photo-ops for my brother. We wrapped up our trip at Goldfield Rec at 6:45.

Paddling my way through the Supes closure. The 4th paddle trip in past 13 days. A trip down the Salt is another one of those outdoor recreations that would typically be reserved for a weekend or day off, but is actually very doable before going to work.

4:30am - Meet my friend Pat at Power/McDowell.
4:40am - drop shuttle vehicle at Goldfield exit.
4:59am - boats on the water at Water Users put-in.
6:16am - take out at Goldfield.

Est. Avg Flow 800cfs

Salt River wild horses, red-winged blackbirds, and great blue heron were plentiful. Other human beings, not so much. Always a great wilderness experience at this early hour.

4th of July family float. We celebrated my daughter Alex's birthday today with a trip down the Salt. Group of 10 met up at 7am and had all crafts on the water by 8. Holiday crowds in full force, although the early start kept us ahead of the masses. Put in at Water Users and take out at Goldfield. Great day, lots of horses, fun people on the river. Good time.

A little bit later start this morning meeting up with Patrick at 4:30am. Dropped shuttle at Phon. Put in up at the bridge and on the water at 5:01. Wildlife everywhere, great blue heron, white egrets, birds, ducks, hawks, wild horses, rabbits. I lost the plug on my kayak which has never been a problem in the past, except for occasional splash-in. Today, not so lucky. In the last mile I could feel the extra weight of water. If I stopped quickly, it would swoosh in front of me. With about a 1/4 mile to go the back end finally dipped below water level, and then really started taking on water. We were just about 150 yards from the end and I could tell I was slowly sinking. Pulled to the side even though the finish was right there in front of me. Dumped out the water and then finished the paddle. Lost some time compared to last week. Gonna have to find a cork!

Goal and plan set to kayak Lower Salt before going to work. Met up with my friend Patrick at corner of Power and McDowell at 4:20am. We drove both cars to our take-out at Phon D Sutton. Dropped the shuttle vehicle and drove up to the bridge for the put-in. Kayaks on the water at 4:55am (pre-dawn with just enough light). Instead of the normal easy Sunday float, we paddled a consistent pace, only breaking for water or occasional wildlife sighting. Arrived at Phon D Sutton 6:07am. Loaded up the kayaks in the shuttle vehicle, drove back up to the put-in to retrieve other vehicle. Arrived back home at 7am. Plenty of time to clean-up, unload, shower, eat and leave for work by 8.

This is a challenging but somewhat short hike as far as Ridge line hikes go. Great views the whole way and involves some route finding. I approached from the trailhead at Meridian and followed trail to the east. I'm not really sure of the best route up. I just find a spot and start working up off trail towards the southeastern peak of the ridge. Once on the ridgeline, it's easier and fun. There are some mildly exposed areas where rock climbing skills and holds come in handy. Route finding sometimes involves a decision to go right, left or directly up and over certain peaks along the way. Nothing to difficult. Once across the ridgeline and on the final peak at the north end, there is a "primitive trail" marked by cairns that lead down towards the Boulder Saddle (I believe that is the name). Once at the saddle, follow a much more established trail back down to the trailhead.

A perfect cool summer day to not only hike Tonto Natural Bridge, but just to hang out and enjoy the setting. We found an awesome shade tree hanging over a creek and grass lawn. Set up our chairs and chilled with friends. Three of us went on the short Pine Creek hike to the bridge, then backed up to the Anna Mae trail where we made our way up and back to our spot. Probably less than an hour for the loop. My wife, Anna, had stayed back with our dog (dogs allowed on the grounds, but not on trails). On our return, we found Anna napping on a blanket, enjoying some outdoor r&r.

Afterwards, we drove up to Pine and enjoyed some wine, beer, and knock-out good pizzas at the Old Country Inn and Taphouse. Great day, with only exception being that 87 was closed due to a brush fire north of Mt Ord. Luckily our friends caught the news alert almost immediately. We turned around, headed north to the 260 and over to I-17. What should have been a 90 minute ride home, ended up just short of 3 hours.

Punched this one out in a hurry. 4:44am start and up to the saddle at 5:30. Goal is to be able to hike my age. 49 years old in under 49 minutes. Hope my legs are strong enough to do this for another 25 years.

Of course, its not all about speed. I sat on a boulder and enjoyed the Needle view and solitude for 15 minutes. Nothing quite as peaceful as being there at sunrise and listening to nothing but birds and falling rocks.

Hustled back down the mountain in 30 minutes time and headed home for a big breakfast.

Flatiron via first water at hwy 88 trailhead. It's a 7 mile round trip from this start. 30 minutes to get to Siphon Draw. From there it was 77 minutes to the tip of Flatiron. Ran into Bill Wahl on way down and we descended together along with some good convo.

Took my photographer friend, Mike, out to Peralta. He's older and can't hike very far, but I knew he would like the up-close views of the cliffs, the foliage and views to the south. He only went as far as the first creek crossing and set up to take some pics. I continued on another 1/2 mile or so. There was light rain on and off. At one point, the rain started coming down a little more aggressively. Not knowing Mike's gear situation, I decided to return to where I left him. The rain continued, and so we packed up and started back toward the trailhead. Of course, the rain stopped again, and so we found another place to stop for some photos before going back to the vehicle. Not much of a hike today, but a pleasure to be out in this cool May weather.

Took my time today. Beautiful morning on the trail with plenty of photo-ops. Palo Verde bloom is extreme. Looked like autumn yellow out there.

Mother's Day kayak from the bridge to Phon D Sutton. My wife, her sister from out of town and my mom and dad all enjoyed a beautiful, cool, and partially overcast day. Water is cold and flow is somewhat low for this time of year. USGS reported about 550 cfs coming out of Stewart Mtn Dam.

Limited time available to take my sister-in-law on a short hike. I chose Arnett Canyon. She was very pleased with this hike. We especially enjoyed the cool shady areas where there was also water running at a slow trickle. The water is clear, but the algae growth is started. Sure it will be mucky and then dry very soon.

5:30am start...late for me, but its the weekend, so I slept in. Empty trail head upon arrival. Made my way up to the saddle, then ended up on an off trail explore to some big boulder cliffs that run parallel to the canyon. Finished up my side explore then continued on up. Stopped at the saddle for about 10 minutes then started my descent.

My daughter Emma and I drove out to Granite Reef Dam Rec Area to check out flow on the Salt. We put in and paddled upstream. We muscled up a couple tough spots and ended up about 1.25 miles up the river. We reached a spot that we just couldn't quite paddle up, and thus began our easy float back down. Plenty of kayaks and paddle boards along this section.

Ahh. Desert hiking season has begun. Crowds are gone, morning temps in the 50's. Ideal! On the trail at 4:45am. No one else out there. Reached saddle in 50 minutes. Relaxed and enjoyed views for 10 mins then headed back down. Passed 3 other hikers who were going up.

Not much to report on this quick 5 mile fitness hike. I did notice that the once green flora is now looking very dry.

My first snow-skiing experience in Colorado was certainly worthy. My wife and I flew into Denver to visit her son for a weekend. I had no expectations to ski. No gear, no prep, nothing. Even the flight we took was basic economy. No overhead carry-on, just a small backpack of clothes for two days.

When we got there Friday night, Chris and his friends started talking about tailgating at A-Basin ski resort. Sounded fun, but who would want to go to a ski resort and not ski. That is when Chris offered to loan me some gear and a ski pass. We are same virtually same size in clothes and shoe size, so it all worked out. I was going skiing.

Fun atmosphere as the serious tailgaters arrived early for the free parking lot (the beach). We drank some beers (yes at 7 in the morning). Set up our tent, chairs, grill and table. Some in our group relaxed, others played games (badminton, cornhole), talked with other tailgaters. I strapped into a pair of boots and went skiing.

Great soft groom on every run. I covered as many as I could until I was completely whipped. Took a break back at the tailgate then went back for more. We cleared out early, around 12:30pm and made our way back into Denver to prepare for the rest of our day's plans.
