With Fossil Creek Rd still closed, we travelled east on 260 towards WCC. Roads to Point Trail were in good condition. Hiked down and then upstream. Beginning to see some fall color.

On the road toward Fossil Creek with my kids. First day of no permit season. They had never seen the natural bridge so we made a stop. Lots of brown water rushing through the canyon, so several trails that descend into or travel along the canyon bottom were closed. We hit all the lookouts then proceeded down the Gowan trail to the lookout deck below. Kids were pretty awestruck at the size of this massive hole.

Arrived at road to Fossil Creek near Camp Verde to a closed road sign. "Sorry folks, park's closed. The moose out front should have told you." Just like that our weekend plan of Fossil Creek and Verde Hot Springs were both shut down. Luckily, Bull Pen is not far away and we made our way just a few miles down the road toward our new destination. We set up camp in the desert setting outside the Bull Pen area and then headed towards the TH for our hike. We found a good cliff jumping spot, checked the water depth and made a few leaps. We worked our way back about 3 miles in before turning around since it would be getting dark soon. Mostly desert type scenery along the trail. Veering off trail from time to time is a good way to take in some extra creek views.

Hooked up with Great Northern Resort for a whitewater kayak tour down the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. Water pretty low this time of year, but still a fun runnable flow for inflatable kayaks. The trip was easy-going Class I-II whitewater. Plenty of chill time mixed in with some fun rapids. We even took the opportunity to surf a few small holes.

We found a beach for our lunch break. Phillip, our guide, set up the grill and prepared burgers, chicken and potatoes along with a few sides. Once we got back on the water, we hit some more mild rapids, then three of the four in our group took a 30 foot plunge off a bridge crossing the river. Tourists on the bridge caught the action from up top with their smart phones.

Wrapped up the day loading up our boats and gear and trying to skip stones all the way across the river.

Not so hidden is how I can best describe this picturesque lake in Glacier Natl Park. Too many people on this trail to really enjoy. Hiking beyond the lookout point reduces crowd size considerably.

Two day backpack on Glacier's Boulder Pass trail out to Upper Lake Kintla. Picked up back country permits in Apgar and then made our way up past Polebridge to the northern most entrance of Glacier Natl Park. The entrance to the park at this location was unmanned. Already having our permits, we just passed right through towards the trailhead.

We loaded our packs and hit the trail. The trail quickly reaches Lake Kintla, then follows along that lake for the next 6 miles or so. Fall color was prevalent but not at full peak. As we passed from this lake to Upper Kintla, we walked through a wide-open basin with incredible snow-capped mountain views. Sounds of cascading water could be heard, but not often seen. The trail does not pass near any waterfalls or flowing water between the lakes.

We arrived at the west end of Upper Kintla. A beautiful approach that exits a tunnel of forest into the wide open space surrounding the lake. Again, fantastic mountain views all around us. From here it was only a few more miles to our camp site on the east end of the lake.

We made it to the campsite and proceeded to set up camp for the night. There was one other group of 5 who had already spent one night at the lake. We all enjoyed night fall, eating our dinners and talking around the campfire.

The next day we enjoyed the morning before tearing down camp and making our way back down the 11.4 mile return.

I can feel the cooler weather returning. Even the caterpillars and butterflies are happy. They were everywhere and in mass.

Started out on route towards waterfall, then made a hard left up the prominent rocky peak just in front of Noble Mtn. I've been up here several times. Incredible views of the surrounding valley, Nutrioso, Auger Canyon, Springerville, Dry Valley. Wrapped around east side of mountain on the way down. Lots of downfall obstacles to work around. Looped back towards our cabin arriving 3 hours after we started.

The early morning was a rain out which led to watching "the good, the bad and the ugly" at the cabin (all 3 hours), which led to a late start at the trailhead. Anyway, we hiked in just over 3 miles. This is a beautiful time of year in the White Mtns. Enjoyed the views and the easy trail then returned same way.

Couldn't sleep this morning. After two days in a row of getting up at 4am to go hiking, my body was ready to adapt to the new schedule. I tossed and turned for an hour, then just gave in and rolled out of bed at 5am. Took a drive out towards Canyon Lake and pulled over around mile marker 207. Found a lightly used trail that took me to a small peak. Couldn't have been but 200 feet elevation gain and probably not much more than a 1/4 mile to the peak. Nice views of the lake from this location (nevermind the trash everywhere from the typical pigs who don't care about the beauty of the area).

It's been many years since I last did this trail. The petrogyphs are a pretty cool sight, but other than that, not much going on with this short hike.

From First Water TH I traveled counter-clockwise towards Garden Valley. Stopped at the Garden Valley arch. This time, rather than complete the loop through Hackberry Spring area, I returned the way I came.

First Water Rd very bumpy today. Monsoon storms are having an effect. Still okay for a 2wd car, just rough. Started just after 5am. Made a detour to the arch, then back on the trail. Wrapped up at 7am.

As many times I've done this loop, I never ventured out to see the arch. I decided this was the day. So simple. Just 300 meters and a little bit of elevation gain off the main trail. Took me a little longer to get there since I did not know the exact approach. Now I've got a quick route figured out.

A day of playing hooky from work with my son, daughter, nephew, niece and a couple others. Did the usual...free climbing, cliff jumping, rope swinging, swimming, hiking, etc. Hot day and a cold river.

Its that time of year. Wild raspberries should be close or ready. I made my way up the mountain towards two spots that I had previously loaded into my GPS. First location at around 8600 feet was a little weak. I picked a few, but many were not quite ripe. Started up towards 8800 feet and the 2nd spot. Many more berries and a lot more were ready for picking. I spent a good hour, maybe 90 minutes picking. Returned back to the cabin just in time for a french toast breakfast featuring my fresh harvest.

Took the family out to the Black for some hiking and swimming. Parked at Wildcat Bridge and made our way up river. Swam and jumped off rocks at a nice little hole about 0.5 miles in. We caught some isolated rain showers afterwards. Nothing to complain about since we were already wet from the swim. Returned to car as it approached 1pm and we had to be back at the cabin to meet up with some friends.
