Would love to have joined the 7 HAZ'ers who tackled Flatiron on this day, but was looking for something a little easier for my 8 year old boy, Justin. We headed out for Oak Flats at 6:45am, stopped along the way to photograph a spectacular sunrise, and met up with my friends Todd and Sara in Superior. We started our day with a little bouldering. We even threw some shoes on my son and he was soon tackling some small boulders. Hiked down into Euro Dog Valley which had flowing water down in the creekbed. Todd says the area is usually dry to the bone. We noticed some sprinkles along the way and gray clouds over head. We climbed a few walls at the bottom of the canyon and continued along. Then came the real rain. Todd decided to turn back to retrieve the truck so we wouldn't have to walk the road back in the rain. The boulder hopping started to get a little slippery and Justin was getting a little nervous. I kept him dry with an emergency rain poncho, but he still wasn't liking this rain hiking. Todd parked up top and headed down into the canyon to meet us. We walked up the ridge and jumped in the truck as the rain continued to fall. After I got home I sent Todd a text message. "We got out of there just AFTER the nick of time."

Met up with my hiking partners, Rand and Todd at 7am in AJ. Started this hike at 7:30 from First Water TH with the goal of reaching La Barge Box. Picked up the Second Water trail, through Garden Valley, and down the hill to Boulder Canyon. Headed north for a short way, then crossed the creek and took the trail leading to La Barge. Boulder hopped and bushwacked our way south down the creek to LaBarge Box. The many waterfalls provided a soothing soundtrack along the way. Reached our destination at 11:15am. What a destination it is. Flowing waterfalls, full pools, colorful granite, surrounded by towering walls. Even better, we were the only ones there. We took of our shoes, lounged, ate lunch and did some exploring (playing) around this incredible area. I felt like a kid on a playground. We decided to avoid the bushwacking and bouldering return route and opted for the Battleship Mountain pass that took us to Boulder Canyon. It was a little tricky finding any trail. I didn't know if one even existed until Todd spotted a cairn and soon a trail became clear. Boulder Canyon was flowing nicely too, although not as fast and powerful as La Barge. Found ourselves back at the Second Water trail and started our way back towards Garden Valley. When we reached Garden Valley, we veered off trail to our right and finished what would be the back half of Garden Valley/Hackberry Springs loop. After making one wrong turn we decided to trust the GPS and made our way off trail over a small ridge. From atop the ridge we spotted the trail and finished off the last quarter mile to the TH at 3:45pm.

Opened the garage at 6am this morning to find it was raining. More of a drizzle really. Usually, Wind Cave is just a mid-week fitness run/hike for me, but this time I grabbed my waterproof camera. I met up with my friends Amanda and Rand and we proceeded to the trailhead. As we arrived, the trickle of rain stopped. The mountain was covered in fog. We strapped on headlamps and hit the trail along with Amanda's golden retriever Chevelle. Within a few hundred yards, a pack of coyotes started in with their howls and cries. They were very close. As we hiked up to the cave, the fog appeared to lift. We turned off our lights about half way up. Just when we thought it would clear, the fog began to reappear. First it blanketed our view of the valley, then the nearby mountains, then the trailhead was out of view, and soon we were in the middle of the haze. Visibility was reduced to just a few hundred feet. This normally routine hike turned out to be a cool hike in the clouds.

Met up with my friend Rand and two HAZ'ers (Marlin and Pencak). We dropped off a shuttle vehicle at the Siphon Draw TH then headed over to the Hieroglyphics TH. We started our hike at 7:30am. Trail was well cairned past the petroglyphs and pools. There were a few moments where we lost the trail, but using preloaded GPS tracks were able to pick it up quickly. Worked our way up past the scree and reached the Ridgeline at 9:30am. After a short snack and photo break we continued north along the Ridgeline towards Flatiron. This trail is well worn and easy to follow. There are a few moments where we would have to search for a cairn to decide if we needed to go left or right around an obstacle, but with four sets of eyes on the watch, someone was always able to spot the next move within seconds. As we approached the saddle leading up to Flatiron, Chris (Marlin) and I were feeling a little extra adventurous and decided to poke around some hoodoos on our right. I'm glad we did. We climbed around, took some great pics and saw some unique formations. This little side trip added an extra mile to our trek but it was well worth it. We caught up with Larry (Pencak) and Rand who we found lounging comfortably on top of Flatiron. It was about 1:00pm and a cold wind started whipping across the Flatiron. This got us up and moving and we made our way down Siphon Draw and back to our shuttle at 3:30pm.

Guided a group of 8 on this quick trip to the petroglyphs. Trailhead packed and way too many people hanging out at the glyphs for my taste.

Flat iron plus the summit. This is an exhilerating hike that gets your blood pumpin'. Saw people of all ages at the top of Flatiron. Although tough, it seems most anyone who is dedicated to the task can make it to the top. Some take longer than others. The short extra bit to the summit was far less traveled and the 360 degree views were spectacular.

Started with lower Telephone Trail through the forest of Manzanita Scrub. Picked up the Icehouse Canyon Trail to the peak. Looped back down on the Sixshooter Canyon Trail. Visited the mine near Dog House Spring, made wrong turn at top of Icehouse and trekked up to Pinal Peak. Logged 12.2 miles on the GPS.

Not sure how far we went in as GPS signal was too weak to record data down inside the slot. We hiked for 4 hours and returned the way we came via Wire Pass

Very cool slot canyons. Had to take off my pack in order to squeeze through certain areas that were about 1 foot wide. I ascended through little painted canyon. Some ropes are already in place for 2 climbs (12 - 20 feet each). In one area I had to crawl underneath a large boulder wedged between the canyon walls. Exited this canyon to the right and traveled down well marked trail until arriving at clearly marked trail to the right. Descended into Ladder Canyon. As name implies, someone put ladders in areas where a downclimb is required. Aluminum ladders in good condition. Have to climb around a rock slide blocking the trail and then back into the Painted Canyon. Another 1/4 mile and the loop is complete.
