Quick morning hike out past the Hands. Out and back with a 15 minute break before the return trip. When you are uber aware and on the look out for rattlesnakes, even a horny toad on the trail can make the heart skip a beat. A little warm and sticky but a nice cool breeze in my back on the return was a nice treat. Out in 45, back in 35.

Early arrival. Carney and Peralta trailheads both empty. Started just before 5am. Arrived at Fremont Saddle 47 minutes later. Continued out to the lone pine lookout. Overcast day. Sun poked its head out a couple times, but mostly remained hidden. Saw a tarantula and a millipede. Only critters for the day. On my way down, some people coming up told me to watch for a rattlesnake near the trail. I thanked them for the info and continued on, never seeing the snake.

Quick trip from Meridian TH to Pass Saddle. Cool temp in the high 70's, but thick humidity. Ran into some nice folks on my way down. We talked a bit, then I continued down. Trail a little muddy in spots after hard Monday night rain.

Put in at Water Users around 8am. Already 100+, but you just don't really notice once the boats are on the water. Great flow today. Somebody turned it up a notch (about 1400 cfs). We took out at Goldfield Rec and skipped the circus that is Phon D Sutton. Shorter trip than usual, but considering the heat, a good idea. We got lucky at take out. A huge cloud covered the sun for the duration of our wait while the girls picked up our put-in vehicle. Thank you mother nature for that little bonus.

Didn't necessarily come here for a hike, but for a heat escape. 80 degrees or so down by the water, but a gentle breeze made it feel even cooler. Set up a couple hammocks and lounged under the trees for awhile before returning back up. Arrived to a dead battery. Ouch! Fortunately, I had my BoosterPac to get us right back up and on the road. Whew!

Started at 4:23am with headlamp. Came across a big furry tarantula. Other than that, just a typical work day morning hike. Watched sun come up from my destination, then returned the same way.

Been awhile since my last Flatiron. Started at 4:55am. Temp was 70 and breezy. Did not see anyone out there on the way up. Reached the Iron at 6:25. Stayed a few minutes then started down. A dozen or so hikers were on the way up as I picked my way down the draw. LDSP wrote me a violation notice saying I didn't pay, even though the tag hung on my rear view mirror. Straightened that out up front and left.

Arrived just before 5am. One car at the trailhead on this beautiful 73 degree morning. Apparently, it is too hot to hike in the desert for most. To the saddle in 50:50. Hung out up top for 10-15 minutes then made my way back down.

On the trail at 4:40am with headlamp on. Probably could hike without the light, but can see better and move faster with it. 44:38 to Fremont Saddle, then continued out to the lone pine. Spent some time admiring the views of early sunlight striking the east side of the needle and surrounding rocks. Headed back down. Time from Fremont Saddle to trail head was 30:18. Remaining 45 minutes was combination of out and back to lone pine and chill time by the pine.

Garden Valley Loop or Hackberry Spring Loop? Doesn't matter what you call it. A 5 mile trip that cuts through both areas. Started at 5am this morning, listened to the coyote calls, and wrapped up at 6:20am. 64 degrees at start and finish. Who says its too hot to hike in the Supes. Not I.

Father's Day Float.

Perfect timing to hit the Salt after last night's storm and cool down. 70's when we started our float and about 95 at 2pm when we finished. I had my 3 children, wife, and a few friends along for the ride. We put in at Water Users and let the river lead the way. Took the first right down the light rapids and the exciting next left which leads to what is probably the only Class II rapid on the lower Salt. This is as wild as it gets. My son ran the rapids twice. Once while we all got out and watched, then again when everyone took their turn. One in our group, opted to carry her kayak around the rapid section. The rest of the float was calm and uneventful. We took out at Phon D Sutton, which is like arriving at a third world circus. :o People all over the place. An indescribable funk in the air, loud annoying music. All the solitude, nature and beauty is lost at this point. Its a convenient take out point, other than that, not a recommended stop on a hot summer weekend day. We found ourselves moving as quickly as possible to get out of there and up to the parking lot for some fresh air.

I would definitely say this is the most easily accessible route to the Roost and the most scenic. Starting off with the climb up Peralta Trail to Fremont Saddle and a view of the needle, then continuing up the western ridge heading south. Great views of Weavers Needle anytime you look over your shoulder. The route is well-cairned (too much in my opinion). Once you reach the Roost, requires some fun problem solving to actually get down into it. The most direct path is not the correct one unless you are a jumper. You may even end up dropping in via the rabbit hole if you find it. Be careful...enjoy the Roost.

35min up. 32 down. Fast walking pace. Warm morning. Just last week it was 65 degrees for my morning hike. 87 today. Looking forward to a 10-15 degree cool down this weekend. Cross your fingers and bring on the rain.

I advertised this trip to my friends as a "3 Hour Tour." Yeah just like Gilligan's Island. So, knowing me, they knew there was no chance we would be back in 3 hours. Ended up being closer to 5 hours, but there was a lot to see. Elk were out everywhere including a group of 14 bulls dressed in velvet antlers. We also came across one whitetail dear and 3 antelope that were bedding down in the shade of some Ponderosa pines not far off the side of the road.

Along the way, we drove through a mixture of burnt areas and others that were untouched by the Wallow Fire. In many of the burnt areas, the aspen are coming back with a vengeance. Thick stands of aspen are popping up everywhere. It has been 7 years since the fire. Much of the aspen we saw are in the range of 8-15 feet tall.

We circled around Big Lake and headed south towards the Black River. We parked near a bridge and hiked in about 1/4 mile to a nice pool that was deep enough to take a dip and jump off the rocks. A fisherman's trail zigzags back and forth across the river which was running low for this time of year.

We finished up our trip with a drive back up along the East Fork Black River and into the Williams Valley area, before getting on the highway back to our place in Auger Canyon.

Planned to reach the "dry" Massacre Falls today, but did not have much in the tank after an aggressive 5 miles the day before. Plus, feeling like a cold is trying to infiltrate my body. Hard to call it a cold when its 110 outside for the high.

I had about 2 hours to work with which should have been plenty of time to make the falls and back. Instead, I turned around at 2.4 mile mark just as the trail drops into the creek that is fed by the falls. Completely dry of course on this day. Need some rain. Even the prickly pear are looking under the weather.

Arrived back at a still empty trailhead at 6:45am. The desert hikes are still gorgeous this time of year. People are missing out on some beautiful hiking weather. 65 degrees at the trail head today.

Started at First Water TH. This was my first time doing the Hackberry/Garden Valley Loop in a clockwise direction. Left trail head heading back up the road to the trail turn off to the right (leading towards old windmill and stable). Down into the first creek bed, then through the canyon at Hackberry. Started the loop towards the south and up through Garden Valley. Turned right at Second Water Trail and finished up back at First Water TH where I parked.

Easy float down the salt with friends. A week ago, flow rate was around 750cfs. On this day, closer to 1100 which is preferable. We launched from Water Users Rec area. If you enjoy rapids, I suggest staying to the left before the bridge. There is a nice set of woop-te-doos. Nothing more than Class II, but fun nonetheless. If you prefer more mild, stay to the right. Other than that, not much paddling, we just enjoyed letting the river take us down to Phon D Sutton for the take out.

This trip could easily be completed in 1/3 or 1/4 the time, if you actually paddled through more aggressively.

Up early at 3:30am and on the trail by 4:30. Used headlamp in the beginning. Could see light of a couple others ahead of me. Wound up passing them and had saddle to myself at 5:15am. Admired the sunrise casting its rays for 30 minutes then started back down. 45 min up. 30 min down.

Patchy snow cover made this an interesting hike. You never knew which step would sink you up to thigh deep in snow. Several of us tried different lines, but often with the same result. It was like a game of footstep roulette. Most of the time we were okay.....then swoosh, right down past the kneecaps. We topped out just below 12,000 feet at Silver Dollar Lake, then returned same way. Great views the whole route.
