Needed to get out of the house and take a break from the heat so my grandpa and I went to Yucaipa to see some family and Big Bear for pizza, which we didn't even get thanks to breakfast. Still some snow on Gorgonio. The smog was unbelievable. I have never seen it so bad, especially up into the mountains. Checked out Big Falls on our way out, which was a little more crowded that my last visit. Then again, there wasn't 3 feet of snow this time.

Wanted to check out the little pond's water level. Lots of bees, but no people up there until I started heading out.

Time excludes the 15 or-so minutes spent at the waterfall.

I was going to do the whole circumference, but my ankles were destroyed. Great views of the mountains and lots of interesting cacti. Caught some rain as well. What's better than the scent of wet desert?

This seems to be one of the last days of cooler weather before Picacho Peak State Park closes its doors, and I had to take advantage of it. Entered the park to find that it was seemingly deserted. Visitor center was closed (I think) and all parking lots in view were empty. What luck. Drove up to the trailhead where there were only four cars. Perfect!
Passed two solo hikers before even reaching the saddle, and caught pair a little further down the way. I got to the top and had it to myself for a little more than a half hour then ran into someone as I started to leave. Some of the other triplogs mention crowds... You guys were yanking my chain, right? Took another trail to one of the other peaks to get a picture of Picacho and it was cable time. Going down was much more pleasant that I thought it would be. Time after time I would stop walking to take a look around, only to find that I had gone off trail; the washed out areas were confusing. I added quite a bit of time coming down from the saddle to the car by looking at the cliffs above. So beautiful I could cry! But I didn't - Instead I was startled by a tiny lizard on one of the cables (insert profanity here). I would love to do the Sunset Vista trail next time. Maybe one day the state's budget will kick back into shape and the parks will open again. One could only hope...

My first summit! What a fun hike. The first steep section was exciting. I'm pretty sure I'm not in the greatest shape, so the trail felt endless for a little bit. Went something like, "Oh, thank God - no!"
Took an hour and seventeen minutes to get to the top. The views were great. Didn't seem like there were that many people there either. Headed down after forty minutes maybe. I'm not sure how long I stayed; it was too enjoyable. Cholla Trail is next!

Having just done Camelback, we found ourselves right next to Piestewa, and what kind of people would we be if we didn't show it some love? Took about an hour and five minutes getting up to the top. I felt pretty exhausted. There was practically no shade so the sun took its toll. I thought I was going to run out of water as well which was just another reason to turn back. Wound up having a liter so I pressed on. Stair after stair... Chuckwalla after Chuckwalla... It was so relieving to get to the top. Climbed up to where the marker was, got a picture, and headed back. I would love to play it off, but I felt pretty miserable on the way down. Sitting has never felt so good.

Note to self: If you're going on two "strenuous" hikes in one afternoon, eat more than a Clif bar and a glass of milk.

Once again, set out for a White Tank summit, and failed! Made it further than last time, though. It was a really nice day, despite being much hotter than the forecast called for. We took our sweet time getting through the trail. Made it just passed mile marker three and went ahead of my sister while she waited. I got around mile 4 where we were supposed to go off trail for the ridge, but it looked too thick for me, and without GPS, I wasn't sure where to start. Not to mention I was still a little spooked from seeing a harmless snake (really need to get over that fear). After we met up again, we took about a 15 minute break on a big slab of rock over looking the valley. Our ankles were so sore by the time we got back to the car. We must be doing something wrong haha.

Great day. We missed a turn and parked by the river. I got a little ahead of myself and wound up missing the trail on the way down to the falls. Had to turn back after making the decision that I didn't feel like falling. Got to the bottom and started walking up through the mud. Almost lost my shoes... After getting a few pictures, I stopped for a minute to take it all in. I must say, all of the trash was a great addition to the scenery :yuck:

Set out for the White Tank Summit this morning. All systems were go until the trail began to do some damage to my sister's knee. We turned back just short of the two mile mark. Despite not making it to our goal, it was a really nice day on a fun trail. Wildflowers and lizards everywhere. Not to mention I caught a glimpse of a snake before it scurried into a bush. Pretty cool!

I first found out about Tonto National Monument at the rest stop where the 87 and 188 meet. It was instantly put on my list of ruins to see. My first trip here was a giant swing and miss. We arrived at the visitor center after a two and a half hour drive only to realize we couldn't go into the lower ruin due to bee activity. What a sad drive home that was. Flash back to March 2010; the trip is set in stone. Needless to say, I'm excited.

My sister, our friend Sam, and I leave the house at 6:30, and after a few stops get on the road at 6:40. After a very nice drive, we find ourselves in the parking lot looking up at the lower ruin. We walk into the visitor center, confirm our reservation, browse the various exhibits. The rest of the people in the group start to meet up sparingly in front of the visitor center, so we join the trend. After we met up with our ranger for a quick briefing, it was adventure time.

After getting on the trail, our ranger began to explain how the park captures pictures of wildlife, along with some other information I can't remember. We make our way a little further up the trail to find Miner's Lettuce. It's just a taste of things to come. After going off trail for a more adventurous feel, our ranger explains how a rock the size of a car had fallen from one of the cliffs above, and once again, we press on. Back on the trail, we encountered a squirrel who ran right into the group - literally. It's almost as if this squirrel wanted to steal every ounce of our groups attention from the guide, and that it did.

After making our way up the switchbacks, we all sat in a neighboring alcove for a snack. It was a great time to imagine what the Salado people saw day after day. Countless thoughts of leaving the group to stay here ran through my mind. Before we knew it, it was on the the dwelling. Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I wish I could just tell the entire group to just go away so I can experience the true solitude of the area. As the ranger spoke to us, we began to start looking around for ourselves. So many things to explore; where do you start? It was weird to see the ceiling intact in one of the rooms. I always wonder what the Salado (or any other southwest civilization) would think if they knew their homes would be here so long into the future.

It seemed like we had just got there, when the tour was over. We all started heading down the trail. Excited to get back to the Miner's Lettuce, I couldn't take my time. As soon as the switchbacks were over, I jumped off trail for a more thrilling experience. I think it was a good idea considering the trail was just a few feet away, and the ranger insisted on it earlier.

This was a ranger-led night hike up to the waterfall. We couldn't make it to the adults only hike, so we settled for a family hike the following night... Never again.

It was raining quite a bit this morning. We left when it stopped in hopes of getting there and back before it could start up again. Fortunately (and unfortunately), the rain was completely over. We spent a short while at Petroglyph Plaza, but soon rushed to the waterfall. The cliffs up ahead looked pretty big, and the clouds made every picture that much better. Our excitement grew a bit when we noticed the water was flowing over the stairs leading up to the falls. After trying to balance on rocks, I made the decision that it was better to just walk knee-deep in the water instead of falling from trying to stay dry. I got as close to the falls as I could before the chicken in me realized I couldn't go any further.
