Finally got around to this one. Route Manager projected 5000ft AEG but my track came up a little short. :-({|=

Hit the road at a quarter to 4am. Stopped in Tucson for breakfast and made it to Coronado's visitor center by 8am. Poked around for a little bit and hit the trail 20 minutes later. Joe's Canyon was a great choice - beautiful views of the Huachucas and Mexico.

The views never let up along the Crest Trail and neither did the wind, especially higher up. I only spent 10-15 minutes on Miller because it was under constant barrage. When I stood up to move to a different spot, I was promptly knocked over. Of all the mountain ranges in the area, my eyes were continually drawn to Sierra San Jose in Mexico (the pointy one to the southeast).

Took a few minutes back at Montezuma Pass to air out my socks. The wind came back with a vengeance on Joe's Canyon. It did a great job of keeping the bugs, heat, and monotony at bay throughout the day. I'll take it over those three any time. Made a stop at El Guero Canelo for some Sonoran Dogs on the way home - always a good choice.

Enjoyable trail despite the extensive fire damage. I even managed to stay dry while crossing Oak Creek. :y:

Prepping for future hikes. Made sure I brought some headphones along and it was smooth, distracted sailing. Rob in the lookout asked if I wanted to head up, but first he asked if I could secure a pulley to a nearby building - done and done. :) Some awesome views up there. Does that climb count for any AEG?

I noticed another car at the trailhead on the way down. I kept eyeing the road and didn't see anyone on their way up. Then, a familiar looking pup turned the corner. Nice to meet Rowdy and chat with Larry again. Certainly didn't expect to see anyone up there on a Monday morning, let alone a HAZer.

PS - your doors were locked, Larry. I imagine the guy that was there when I checked thought I was about to break in to your car.

Steep and rewarding hike with grand views at the end. Always cool to pass through different life-zones.

It was a pleasant 60 degrees higher up (probably cooler than that), with plenty of wind and plenty of cumulus clouds on the way down. Almost 85 back at the car.

Kimball Slice packs a punch!

Haven't been on Willow or Ford in a while so I decided to hit both. Pretty warm for the first mile, then the breeze finally kicked in. Wound up having perfect weather for the remainder of the hike.

Someone spray painted two arrows at the lower end of Ford, when you first enter the wash. You should be able to figure out where to go in that spot, but evidently some are having trouble. It would be nice if the park would put an extra marker there. Maybe then people would leave the paint at home. ](*,)

I wasn't sure if I would get a parking spot at the bridge, but I lucked out on the second try. First thing on the list was Wilson's highpoint. Point 7122 is the highest according to the map, but in person, an outcrop south of that is visibly higher. My GPS also showed an extra contour at the southern end of the knoll, so I think I picked the right spot. I hit both overlooks afterwards. Cloudy, but great views on the north side; prime, partly-sunny views at the south side.

Loved this hike. Scenic overload!

Union has been on my wishlist for almost 5 years. I wanted more elevation gain than the standard approach and decided to take the Palace Station/Yankee Doodle idea off the back burner.

I hit the road around 5:30am and didn't start hiking until almost 10am since I neglected to bring a road map. :D I wound up asking for directions near Potato Patch, promptly messed them up, and headed back towards Lynx Lake to check with Google. [-( Turns out I had it right the first time, but I backtracked after second guessing.

The section of Senator Highway that heads down to Palace Station was a lot rockier than I had expected. The tread on my tires isn't what it used to be so I took it slow. Really slow. My car's old suspension was making noises I've never heard before. I parked a tenth of a mile north of Palace Station and finally set out on the hike.

Continuing my theme of ignorance for the day, I didn't realize the first half of #284 was in chaparral. Not so bad on the way up - kind of warm on the way down. The upper half of the trail was great once it was in the trees. Union has an exceptional 360 degree view. The lookout was unmanned so I helped myself to the stairs.

Looks like the drive in took longer than the hike. It was probably worth it.

This is the most elevation gain I've had in a day since the beginning of 2015. [-(
The last entry I read in one of the notebooks at the summit was from January.
Saw 6 deer on the return trip - almost goes without saying at this point.

The amount of useless cairns in the park is on the rise. Where's Bob when you need him?

Had a great breeze and a bright moon - perfect night for a hike. Took a second trip up to the Circumference Trail and back. Also added the mileage (and time) from the lower lot to the trailhead because I'm greedy.

Got GPS tracks for Watson Overlook and Discovery Point. It was an exhausting trek and I'm thankful I made it back in one piece.

Saw a small dozer/Bobcat and some new trail SE of the saddle on Lost Creek. I'm guessing they're going to bridge the gap to 2110. Glad I got to hike that ridge already.

I guess autopilot did most of the work this time. Had to break out the headlamp on the last mile of Mesquite - the full moon helped, too.
Only saw one group of people during the first 8 miles. Not bad for a Saturday. Starting after 3pm makes all the difference!

Saw a few poppies along the first mile of Goat Camp. "Extremely isolated" is a better description.
