Despite the rain this morning, this is always a great hike. Nothing like battling Battleship in the cold and overcast to make you feel tough!

Tagged along with the HAZ crew for this lovely hike. Someday, I swear, I won't be the slowest! I'd done Hidden Valley before, and last time wasn't anticipating the drop at the end. I couldn't stand the thought that this beautiful valley had beaten me, so I decided to go back. I really enjoyed seeing everybody, a mule deer, and my first gila monster!

Just needed some time to be outside today. I headed up the Holbert Trail, but instead of turning off for the lookout, I hiked out to the National Trail and followed it for a bit before turning back.

I had never braved the Flatiron before, so when Kyle suggested doing this hike I was a little daunted. That being said, the Flatiron is an Arizona staple, and I was more than a little curious. The morning began beautifully. The sun came up, and there was a little chill in the air. As we ascended, light snow could be seen dusting broken branches. I was pleased at how quickly we made it up, and we had a quick snack on the Flatiron, looking down on the clouds and houses below.

We made a brief detour to check out the recent crash site, which has been cleaned up remarkably well. A scorched patch on the mountain is really the only sign we saw -- a stark reminder of what happened just this Thanksgiving. Then we headed across the ridgeline toward Carney.

For the first 2/3 (roughly) of the ridgeline, I was enthralled. The trail gently rises and falls and offers some of the most beautiful scenery I can imagine. About 2/3 of the way through, however, we hit a bit of weather. A dense fog rolled in and obscured everything below us, although we were still able to see the trail. Unfortunately, the visibility diminished exactly when the trail becomes more difficult to follow, and the terrain more treacherous. The trail crosses the ridge a few times, and long stretches find you cairn hunting across smooth rock expanses. The fog had made everything slick, and I had a lot of trouble gaining my footing. While Kyle was totally calm throughout this, I was pretty nervous. I couldn't see anything below me, and had visions of sliding to a grisly death in a white abyss. This is absolutely and admittedly silly, but word to the wise -- if you have an active imagination or tend to be clumsy, I'd steer clear of this hike in even mildly inclement weather. Slippery rocks and steep drop offs abound!

This is a gorgeous hike, and I look forward to trying it again (possibly in the reverse direction) in the spring -- after several consecutively dry days.

I wanted to go check out the ruins, and I had a great time, though I had a bit of trouble sticking to the loop (hence the extra mileage). There are so many trails out here, it's easy to get a bit off track! Still, awesome cloudy day and cool area close to home.

I heard there might be some light snow on Ord today, and I wasn't disappointed. The landscape was gorgeous, if a little chilly.

I believe this is the new record for the longest day hike I've done! Kyle and I headed up Barnhardt, which will always be one of my favorite trails. This time, we took off on the Divide Trail at the juncture. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, and this route is breathtaking -- somehow the views are even better than on Barnhardt. We took a detour over to Bear Saddle and Bear Spring which was pretty far out of the way but cool nonetheless. We headed back toward the parking lot via Y Bar, which wasn't my favorite trail. The fire made it very hard to follow at points, and the whole lower part was relatively steep and covered in loose rocks. By the time you've already done 18 miles, it starts to feel a little too easy to roll an ankle doing something stupid. Next time, I think I'd rather add the extra miles to just backtrack from whence we came!

Overall, it was a great day and a fabulous hike. 20 miles is no longer an impossible day-hike goal! Woohoo!

A friend and I got a very late start today, so we only tackled part of the trail in the interest of light. The climb is half the fun anyway, right?

Did this as part of the SRP Hike-A-Thon carrying 5 gallons of water. Nice trail, and a good training trail with a heavy pack!

A lovely loop on a cloudy day in the Superstitions. I wish there was a little less cat-claw along the trail, though! Wear long-sleeves until they've done some maintenance.

For my first time checking out the Grand Canyon, I wanted to take my time and see the sights. On Thursday, four friends and I headed up to the South Rim, where we caught the Trans-Canyon shuttle. We camped at the North Rim Campground our first night, and despite a dusting of snow and some temperatures that pushed the recommendations of my sleeping bag, we woke up the next morning excited to begin our descent. We headed down the North Kaibab trail which afforded truly spectacular views. I'm glad we went down this way -- I would have been leery to climb up it! It snowed a little, but nothing compared to what it had done the day before -- I heard there was even some snowfall at Phantom Ranch. We hit Roaring Springs en route which made a great rest stop.

After setting up camp, we took off with slightly lighter packs and explored Ribbon Falls. This is a completely worthwhile side-hike, though I wish I had known how to find the route to the upper falls! Something to save for next time. As it was, we climbed up to the lower falls. Seeing the alcove in the distance, we decided to climb over, only to discover on the other side a sign reading "Dangerous: Go No Farther" speaking to the area we had just crossed. Whoops! We all survived and it was totally worth it.

The next day we headed down to Bright Angel. We explored along the River Trail with a little history lesson by John9L and headed up to the lookout at Clear Creek, not wanting to exhaust ourself too thoroughly before climbing out the next day. The views of the river were breathtaking, and I wish I'd had more time to climb further. I enjoyed grabbing a beer at Phantom Ranch, but the next time I do this hike I'm going to make room in my pack for a flask of whiskey or something a wee bit stronger. We saw lots of ringtails, a scorpion, some very angry bees, a couple of deer, and lots of enormous ravens.

The next morning we started the climb up to Indian Gardens, which really lived up to its reputation as an oasis. We explored a bit along the Tonto Trail and caught sunset at Plateau Point.

We climbed out the next morning. I thought I was excited to shower and sleep in my own bed, but this morning I caught myself a bit disappointed to wake up away from the great outdoors. I can't wait to plan my next trip down!

The thing I love about Ord is that you get in a workout going up, and you get to savor the views going down. Plus, the top is always swarming with ladybugs! This is probably my favorite conditioning hike.

I am so excited it's finally getting cool enough (kind of) to hike in the valley again. Did this as a quick after-work conditioning hike. As it was still a little warm, and the sun was exactly at the wrong angle, I wussed out and did not head up to summit Pass Mt. Saw two coyotes as I was leaving the park, too, just to really get me enthusiastic about hiking locally this season. :)
