This was a pretty tough ride. Uphill, with the final 1/4 mi at 15%, all the way from Zabriskie Point to Dante's View.
Relatively easy until the trailer parking, then steeper and steeper. At some points, it felt like it might never end.
We did see a few people on bikes, but they had been dropped off at the top to ride only downhill.

Enjoy a sandwich and the views at the top, then down all the way back.

Yearly school fund-raising mountain bike ride in Lucerne Valley. Teachers can apply to use the money raised for things like science camp for their students.
This year I stepped it up and rode the 15-mile challenge course. Totally new course for me and some changes over previous years, so some surprises.
Road (both dirt and paved). wash, and single-track sections. Nothing terribly technical. Plenty of uphill climbing in sand. Some downhill on raw new unconsolidated "trail" that was so soft I was too scared to ride it. :scared: Well, I powered through most of the climbs, and even passed a few riders on them, so overall improvement.

The weather was nice and cool. The predicted severe winds held off until just shortly after we finished.

Good day out in the canyon. Cooler temps with a fresh breeze made for pleasant conditions.
A decent amount of bushwhacking (including cat's claw) in this canyon, but nothing too extreme.
Replaced webbing at most anchors. Perhaps the first group through this canyon for the season.

Saw 2 tarantulas out and about.

Annual event put on by the NV State Parks and Lincoln County. A challenging, scenic route through 4 state parks (Kershaw-Ryan, Cathedral Gorge, Spring Valley and Echo Canyon) if you choose the 100-mi option. Non-competitive ride - not timed and with no official start time, just start windows. Very well organized and supported, with a good variety of participants. Included dutch oven dinner after the ride!

I elected for the 60-mile route, which turned out to be a good choice on this day. Start time (~8am) was 30 degrees! Most biking shoes aren't exactly designed for warmth, so my feet were just leaden weights attached to my legs. Fortunately, they were clipped to my pedals, so couldn't fall off!

After a few miles, the route emerged into the sun and more pleasant riding conditions, although a strong cold wind began to blow from the north soon thereafter. We all fought the wind for the uphill ride out, then bombed downhill with a strong tailwind for the return.

Would certainly do this ride again, but would have to think about it long and hard in similar weather conditions.

A quick trip from the north rim of Grand Canyon in perfect weather to spend one night down on the Esplanade and do some off-trail exploring.

Day 1
We started from the Indian Hollow trailhead rather than Bill Hall, just to try a different trail. Being built for livestock, this trail proved more mellow in terms of grade, but it also spent twice as many meandering miles getting to the intersection with Bill Hall, so you pick your poison. Where Bill Hall is relatively well-traveled, this was quite faint at times and clearly sees much less foot traffic. It is hard to complain about the views on any trail in Grand Canyon, and Thunder River Trail lived up to what we expected with open views toward Deer Creek and Fishtail Canyons. Once down on the Esplanade, the trail began to feel a bit like the Tonto, contouring around the head of each arm of Deer Creek Canyon. We hiked to the intersection with Bill Hall Trail and set up camp in a promising-looking spot among the slick rock before a quick post-dinner jaunt. It always feels so tremendous to hike around in sandals without your heavy pack when backpacking! :y:

Day 2
Slept in until the sun rose, then packed up for a day of exploring. Off-trail on the Esplanade has its own challenges due to dense black brush and trying to avoid damaging the cryptobiotic soil crusts. This slowed us down quite a bit until we got back onto bare slick rock. We managed to find a nice little route along a slick rock ledge for the last 0.5 mi or so to our objective. Ghost Rock has two of the largest pictographs I had ever seen in person. Interesting to contemplate, even accepting I will never understand their purpose or significance. One thing we noted was that anywhere in southern Nevada with such nicely-developed desert varnish would have a lot of petroglyphs to complement the pictographs, but we saw none at Ghost Rock.
Our bread had gotten moldy past the point even I would consider eating it, so there was no lunch, but we have plenty of extra snacks and motored back to the Thunder River Trail much more quickly than we had come out. Then, up and up back to the trailhead and the end of more wonderful time spent in the Canyon.

Not too many leaves left on most trees on the rim, but still some spots of color remain.

More water than usual in this canyon for the time of year, but all still avoidable with creativity and a bit of luck.
All the normal pools were completely full with water flowing out and over the lip.
Anchors good - we replaced some webbing, but nothing major.

Annual ride down Las Vegas Blvd from the edge of town to Jean. A classic road biking route in Southern Nevada.
Placing of ghost bike in honor of our fallen fellow rider, Pete Makowski.
Fund-raising ride to help spread awareness of the 3-ft passing law for bicycles and bike safety in general.
This day's ride, although somber, was very enjoyable, with cooler weather, a fresh breeze, and even a few scattered clouds.

Pete lost his life when hit by a gravel truck on his bicycle.

While this wasn't the most exciting pick for the last day of a long weekend, at least it was close and required little driving. Also, most others were likely up at Mt Charleston or out at Red Rock, and I didn't want to get caught up in that mess.

The entire loop for this trail has now been signed. However, the northern half really just remains a use trail. I hear the BLM is planning to let the public make the trail via use, and then come in with a trail crew at the end to "clean it up." Pretty curious how that's going to play out. Meanwhile, I am guessing the signs are leading some to go on what they think is a built trail, like the southern half of this loop, and ending up mighty surprised by what they find.

Today, I used the northern half of the loop to ascend and the southern half to descend, as I had never previously done the loop in that direction. Turned out to be a good choice, as the more developed southern trail is currently extremely eroded in the steepest top sections. That would have been extremely demotivating on the way up, given the high humidity. Guess I really have lived in the Mojave for a long time, when 34% humidity leaves me drowning in a pool of sweat!

Given the time of day and heat, I was surprised to see 2 guys just reaching the top as I got there. Then, on the way down, I saw a lone woman headed up who seemed to be suffering quite a bit from the heat. No hat! I talked to her for a bit, making sure to ask if she had enough water, and then continued on my way.

Hot, humid day out there! Everyone needs to be careful.

Second day out for the new bike.
Good combo platter of the trails here - More Cowbell, JEM, Goosebumps, Cryptobionic, Dead Ringer.
These trails are not too technical, more the flowing single-track variety suitable for most riders. Fun, fast, good flow.
Trails were in good shape, and the ride uphill on Dead Ringer was not too difficult.

And, yes, there is a cowbell hanging at the intersection of More Cowbell and Dead Ringer for your enjoyment.
Let's just assume it's the bell from the deceased animal these 2 trails are named after... :o

Used Brennan approach, adding distance but allowing options if we were not able to cross the Kern after completing the canyon.
Water was high for the time of year - the arch normally used for releasable anchor at first teacup was completely submerged. This was also my first truly Class C canyon, so a little mentally overwhelming that we would be descending in high water conditions. However, all went well, and I learned some important lessons/skills to practice for future Class C canyons. Successfully navigated the Toilet Bowl. Helped rescue one of our group from a strong hydraulic when he missed a redirect on the last rappel. The water was chilly. In spite of the open nature of the canyon, and plenty of strong summer sun, I was quite comfortable in my 5mm wetsuit.

All-in-all, a beautiful granite canyon that I enjoyed a lot.

A very pretty, fun canyon with a couple of especially nice rappels.
With a fairly late start (5 hr drive!), it was quite warm and the cold water felt great.
No wetsuits today. I did regret the lack of neoprene gloves when it took 1/2 hour to regain feeling in my finger tips!

After our weekend of caving, a quick stop at this warm spring (~91 degrees) was a welcome treat on the drive home.
Depth of the main channel varies from knee to shoulder deep with crystal-clear water. A few interpretive signs provide general information about desert springs. No trail.
The spring has been designated as a refugium for one species of endemic fish, the Moorman White River springfish. There are also 4 other species of fish endemic to the White River system, all confined to perennial springs.
It was a nice change of pace to check out something so different than the norm for this desert-dweller.

The spring is open to swimming - NDOW just asks that you not use soap, sunblock, etc, as those all damage water quality for the fish.
Beware that the road to the spring does have sections of deep standing water over a heavy clay soil. If you plan to drive a low-clearance vehicle, be experienced and confident.

Trip with Southern Nevada Grotto

Nothing technical about this cave. But plenty of crawling through thick clay mud.
The first, dry part of this cave is pretty trashed, covered with graffiti, modern and not-so-modern. In this part of the passage, you can stand normally.
Once you get into the wet part and pass a pit where clay was mined, however, the going gets tougher, the graffiti disappears, and the ceiling comes down to crouching or crawling height. The cave also displays significantly less damage, with only the committed willing to crawl over the thick, slick wet clay.

No huge columns or other formations, as the ceiling remains low most of the rest of the cave, but a living, breathing cave with beauty on a different scale. Great colors, both in the rock and in the formations.

Another good one.

Trip with Southern Nevada Grotto

This locally well-known cave is even on the topo maps. But a ~70-80' vertical entrance protects it from random visitors and graffiti.
Wonderful, beautiful cave with many amazing formations. Most of the formations continue to grow as water percolates slowly through the limestone.

Without a tremendous number of side passages, not a terribly confusing cave. There was at least one spot I would not have had the nerve to attempt without other people who knew the cave. As you squeeze through a small opening feet first, you lower yourself onto a boulder with a gap and long drop in between. If you miss the boulder, well just don't miss the boulder.

The vertical ascent out of the cave was a new challenge for me. I had practiced ascending, but never needed to use the skill in a real situation. My canyoneering gear was far less efficient than the caving set-ups some of our party had, but I reached the top unscathed.

Mileage includes some wandering around after setting up camp.

I have officially gone off my rocker!
Last year's marathon wasn't enough physical torture for my body, so this year I opted for the 51K. In honor of Area 51, of course.

The course, ET HWY 375, was its usual charming self, with plenty of opportunities for UFO sightings thanks to low clouds and far-off lightning.
Some spots you could tell had had wash-over from recent storms, but that had been cleared and cones placed to warn of any drop-offs at the shoulder.
The dense cloud cover meant it wasn't as light as last year's run and the coyotes seemed to be staying at home. It did rain on us fairly hard for about 2 miles and then lightly on and off a few other times. Fortunately, no nearby lightning and it never did pour. Mostly I just ran along (and then trudged at the end), since it was hard to really look around much in the dark.
The almost full moon did come out from behind the clouds a little every now and then, and sunrise was the beautiful kind we rarely get here.

This is a great run if you like a road course and night running with a twist. I myself will be back, but haven't decided on the distance.
