Water was so low, running this canyon was a disgusting experience on this day. Unavoidable pools were stagnant and incredibly stinky - stirring up the water released a cloud of sulfur that seemed as thick as the dishwater-colored water you had to wade through. At least it is a quick canyon, but wish I'd left my wetsuit behind because I'm not sure if I'll ever get the stench out. A canyon to avoid during low water conditions!

This was the way to celebrate July 4th.
A little snow still clinging here and there, but nothing needing traction devices. Both trails were in reasonable condition.
The high elevation flowers are popping!
All the running over the past year has significantly improved my cardio - even with the elevation, this hike felt like no big deal.

More people summiting than I expected - aren't you supposed to be spending compulsory time with the family???

Night-time run of our local Keyhole Canyon.
No moon to speak of. Although the light pollution from Vegas did provide some glow to the sky, star gazing was pretty good.
Used a glow stick attached to the end of the rope as a distance cue for the rappels.

This was a lot of fun and a whole new perspective on the canyon.
Great way to beat the heat, too. :D

A pleasant day spent on an enjoyable canyon loop.

This loop is more a hike with some canyoneering thrown in, rather than straight canyoneering. However, the approach hike is an enjoyable jaunt up a different canyon, with some climbing, scrambling, and problem-solving. Upclimbing is normally not a large component of canyoneering, so that was a bonus.

Not suitable for summer, as you are constantly in the sun with little to no opportunity for even the slightest shade.

Great day in a great canyon. Tons of fun down climbing practice.
Just enough flowing water to make it pleasant, but no need to get wet.

A super-fun canyon with good flow on this day. Several rappels in waterfalls, one good slide.
Interesting rock and good colors. At times, this felt like a Zion canyon.
Exited via "sneak route" after the last rappel, not Cadillac Exit.

Watch out for poison ivy after the last rappel!

Fun, fun canyon. Lots of floating plus some swimming, and a bit of down climbing to keep it interesting. Enough water on this day that we could mostly just let the current carry us along much of the time. Good experience down climbing in Class C conditions.

It became a little chilly waiting almost 1 hour (!) for 2 people ahead of us to finally get set up on the one and only rappel. And, in the end, we had to free their rope for them when they pulled, having left knots at the end of the rappel side. Seemed to be some kind of poorly-thought-out date. Sigh...

Some of our group jumped instead of rappelling after we checked for obstacles - pool was nice and deep, just be sure to jump out correct distance from the wall.

After arriving at the AZ Canyoneering Rendezvous, we looked around for a less commonly run canyon to sign up for.

We found only incomplete beta for this canyon, and none of our group had ever run it, but that just added a fun challenge to my way of thinking. Turned out to be a beautiful canyon with a nice amount of water flow over the waterfalls on this day. The beta we did have didn't exactly line up with what we were seeing, but with an array of natural anchors to select from, that was no surprise. In canyon, we couldn't figure out the purpose of the secondary station on the longest rappel and didn't utilize it. But after re-reading the beta, I realize previous parties were using a different anchor for the first section of that rappel, resulting in a difficult pull. We had no issues and were able to just enjoy the beauty of the canyon.

Interesting canyon - it is well hidden from above and you would really never know anything particularly interesting was down there unless you happened to hear the water flow. We enjoyed splashing around in the water and just generally having a good time. Our selected route out was a terrible scramble up a steep ridge, complete with bush-whacking through cacti and agave. But it was over quickly, so we were all happy for that.

We used a lifted pickup to access the 4X4 alternate start/end point. In the end, that road is such slow going that we probably spent more time driving than it would have taken to hike in and out on the Y-Bar (Shake Tree) Trail. Probably not worth it depending on your vehicle and patience.

Great conditions to run this canyon. Lightly-flowing water with enough depth in pools to make slides possible for many spots. Good air temp.
Releasable anchor used for first rappel in this canyon = 0ur first use of CEM knot in situ. :D
Only forgot how long the approach hike takes and should have started a bit earlier. Boulder-hopping in the dark makes for slow going right at the end :(

The Prospect Trail follows an old road, then a steep-walled canyon through red sandstone cliffs. Some scrambling required.
The White Domes Loop climbs up in loose sand, then sweeps around through a narrow canyon to circle the White Domes sandstone formation.

Combine these two trails, plus some off-trail action and beautiful weather, and you get a very tough half-marathon course.
I will have to come back and enjoy the Prospect Trail at a more leisurely pace - very scenic and well worth the effort.

Talk about biting off more than you can chew! But, chew we did... And chew, and chew, and chew, and chew!

This was the first serious trip with our touring bikes. Two days, one night with all the necessities, no water along the way, and only the vaguest comprehension of what riding 70 miles a day on a touring bike would be like.

Starting out, estimate that my bike with water load weighed some 55-75 pounds. Imagine suddenly gaining half again as much as you weigh now, but no additional muscle, and then riding all day. For 2 days. With aeg of over 8000 ft.

At first, things were fun, with some flat and downhill stretches to take us out of town. That baby really gets going on a downhill! Shortly after that, the suffering began. Likely, you have never driven along North Shore Road at Lake Mead NRA, but it has a lot of short, sharp hills as it crosses the multitude of major washes feeding into the lake. With beautifully warm (really a little too hot for us) weather, there were also a lot of distracted drivers in convertibles and RVs. Interestingly, the motorcyclists all acknowledged us and gave us plenty of space.

Flowers were blooming everywhere, but I found it a little challenging to enjoy them. Thank goodness for grannie gear on my bike, but all the uphill was really getting to me. Finally, we stopped and ate lunch well short of our planned lunch location. The food, and the break, renewed my energy, but that soon faded as it became increasingly clear that we would not reach camping before dark. Naturally, upon reaching the Valley of Fire pay station, we found a sign stating "Campground Full." At least it was better than riding all the way to the campground to find that out, but it left us a little flustered.

After cooking and eating dinner right there at the entrance station, we turned around and headed back into Lake Mead NRA, where dispersed camping is allowed for backpackers (we took that to include bike packers). We found a previously-disturbed area within the parameters, unloaded, and fell into our sleeping bags.

After awaking to a lovely sunrise, we headed back in to the visitor's center at Valley of Fire. Although this was the opposite of the direction we needed to travel, it was our only option for refilling water. Once there, we spent an hour or so relaxing at the shaded picnic tables behind the visitor's center, drinking as much water and electrolyte mix as our stomachs could hold.

The ride back home was just as long and hard as I feared, but somehow it went by more quickly knowing my bed was waiting at the end. This time, we made our planned lunch stop location, where we talked to a nice German couple who had a hard time believing we were from the US. Apparently, bike packing is much more popular over in Europe, generally on trails separated from vehicle traffic.

Still, we didn't reach home until after dark, but it was with a sense of satisfaction at having completed the difficult trip.

It rained and rained and rained and rained. Everyone was utterly soaked. Thankfully, it wasn't very cold.
The first six miles from the Peralta Trailhead were muddy and even a bit slick.
Then paved roads through puddles and flooded intersections.
Well, after running a marathon in this, everything else is cake.
