A good way to spend a half day or short day in Death Valley.
Fun little canyon in a colorful part of the park. With Dante's View closed, these canyons are seeing a little more action lately.

Another canyon in the area of Scorpion and Vinegaroon Canyons in Death Valley, hence Arachnophobia.
10 rappels (max 170 ft) and some moderate down climbing. In the colorful "badlands" area.
Very geologically interesting, fun canyon.

Pretty great off-trail hike to likely the highest perennial waterfall in Death Valley.

A good little hike that takes you to a nice out of the way outcropping of red sandstone. Usually few people.
More a game of follow-the-wash rather than an established trail.

Wet and miserable day, but we got out there anyway. Trails here are a mixture of gravel and dirt, some being old roads. Stunning views of the Columbia River and some nice falls on the OR side are the main draw here. Very nice.

Mystery is not a beginner's canyon, yet enjoyable for those with a little experience. Water levels in some of the pools were a little higher than typical for the time of year, leading to extra wading through chilly water and some log soup. The rappel into Mystery Spring pool was by far the highlight of this canyon. Water on the swims was cold, but with warm air temperatures, the overall experience was just about perfect. Hard permit to score - a great start to fall :y:

On the last rappel into the narrows, avoid sticking your rope by making sure the last person gets the rope LDC from the obvious crack.

Full moon night canyon = great fun!

Brought along our wetsuits and PFDs, floated down the Colorado, and exited at Lone Palm Canyon. In spite of some fun rappels and hot springs near the mouth of both Secret and Lone Palms Canyons, the float down the Colorado was definitely the highlight of this trip. Watching everyone's headlamps bobbing along in the water was a somewhat surreal feeling, especially being well behind the others until I could get out into the river's current and catch up. Easy, quick trip well worth the effort.

Instead of floating the Colorado, you can instead ascend the last rappel by leaving your rope in place to exit (and bypass the other rappels), but what fun is that?

Good hike, as always. Compared with the last time I was here, the portions along use trails are much more beaten in now, making it easier to find your way for those who are navigationally challenged ;) The views of Lake Mead and the whole valley are wonderful for so little work, but one downside to this hike is the complete lack of shade, so perhaps not the best choice for a hot day.

This year, I have been doing mostly canyoneering and running, so it was nice to finally just go on a hike! :y:

Another great day in the canyon. Conditions good - all water avoidable at present with a little creativity. Only one piece of anchor webbing needed replacement.

Annual full moon Area 51 marathon. We ran on the Extraterrestrial Highway, in the dark, so that part wasn't terribly exciting, but the surface was even and no constant headlamp needed. The almost-full moon and a few shooting stars provided enough light for running. The coyotes serenaded us at various points along the course, providing a little musical accompaniment. The temperatures could not really have been better - low 70s at the 12am start time, and gradually decreasing into the high 50s from there. The course was slightly uphill for the first 13.1 mi (or first 6 mi for 1/2 marathon), then downhill or flat after Coyote Summit. Finish line for everyone in "beautiful" Rachel NV.

Some runners were lit up like christmas trees in crazy costumes, while others kept it minimal with the required reflective vest and headlamp. It was a scene and a lot of fun. There were whispers and jokes about aliens, but mostly just a bunch of crazy folks running (or walking) along the ET Highway in the dark.

And I finished my first ever marathon. :o

Absolutely fabulous as always! This is a super fun event with enthusiastic volunteers and well-marked course.
If you have ever, ever considered attending an organized bike event, this is it!

We ride it every year, and added to the fun this year by arriving early and camping out at the cooler high elevation for 2 nights ahead.

My second trip down Subway via the top-down route. :GB:

This is a fun canyon with fairly long hikes on both the approach and exit. The technical part of the canyon isn't all that difficult or long, so suitable for most any experienced hiker. Extremely scenic as a bonus for any photographers in the group.

Warm air temperatures meant we didn't need wetsuits. Some of the swims are quite cold because sun never hits some of the pools and springs add their own cold water along the way, but this is a fairly open canyon in places, meaning there are always nearby patches of sun to warm up in as needed.

The hike out after the subway portion was its usual lengthy self. Especially long with our group of less "broken-in" hikers.

As I felt last time, this canyon is definitely worth doing again, but I probably won't be back soon. Das Boot sounds like it adds to the experience, so maybe try for the combo?
