Started just before 07:00, but without my heart rate monitor & gaiters, which I left right there on the table, where I couldn't possibly miss them. My two primary objectives were to gather some stress data and then do some off trail to check out a cave and a mine. Since I wasn't going to achieve either of those, I figured I'd just have a nice leisurely hike. Yeah, that was wishful thinking, the trail to the peak climbs ~2,300' in 1.4 miles (1,660 FPM or 31%, which ever you prefer), This is arguably more a climb than a hike. As per usual, it was a rough go, but it was cool and shady, plus I stopped quite a bit.

Once again, someone has ordained them self 'Defender Of The Planet', and disposed of the latest summit logs (someone needs a life), so if any one has a spare coffee can and is in the neighborhood...

Though the peak trail itself looks very well traveled, I didn't see a single earthbound animal in the entire length of it. I did see 9 bipeds on the Linda Vista Loop, and quite annoyingly, about half of them were on speaker phone.

Roy and Niel invited me on this one. I could never turn down a ride to the Madera TH. We got rolling around 09:00. Chilly then warm, then chilly, then warm the whole trip. The summit was perfect though, with full sun and a very slight breeze. Oh, and no bugs. There's usually some issue up top, but not today. Saw 8 humans, and about that many coues deer (most of them babies). We also heard quite a few turkeys yakking back and forth, and one of the humans claimed to have seen a coati just outside the parking lot earlier in the day.

As I always say, any day on the mountain is a great day, and it was.

While sitting around, waiting for parts to arrive, my camel was in the truck and the TH was 15 minutes from the job, so I hit it. I set a 45 min timer & turned back as soon as it buzzed.

Wow, that's some AEG.

I heard that they've delayed the road closure at Ruthrauff, so I decided to check for myself. The rumor was true, though who knows for how long.

Made good time with the cooler temps; 47 deg to start and only 66 at the end. A touch of a breeze, coupled with the shade, made it actually a bit chilly at times. Only a few human sightings, no wildlife. Finished 1 minute over my benchmark, so I guess I'm doing alright. Drank 20 oz.

Rolled into town, dumped off my stuff, and hit the trail just before 07:00. Only 2 cars ahead of me on a Sunday a.m. Stopped to talk to an out-of-towner for a full 9 minutes, otherwise should have been a flat 90 min ascent. Been here once or twice before, so I just tagged & shagged. Though I did stop to chat once on the way down, I was just much slower in general at 75 min moving. Just gettin older I guess. Finished up in just under 3 hours, which is my allotted time. This will probably be my new workout hike, now that they're closing off the main access to Wasson Peak for the next few years.

LindaAnn
Met up with the famous Linda for a hike today. It was clear and warm, only lacking a breeze. There were only a few human sightings and no wildlife. I guess we were yakking a lot, but I usually see several deer on this one. Anywho, I had a good hike with great company. Nice to finally meet Linda, who I've followed on HAZ for years.

1st trip
Nice 3 day getaway to knock off a section for AZT In A Day. The section I picked began at Cathedral Jct, below and east of Romero Pass, and ended at the Oracle Ridge TH (about 11.5 mi & 4,000 ft), so I set off a day early in order to camp at my launch point. Since this trip would become multi-day, I decided that a third day would top it off nicely.

Day 1:
Started around 10:30, with 5 liters and a heavy pack. I expected to see much more water, after some heavy rains last month, but I crossed stream only once through the entire canyon. This made day 1 tough, as I hit camp with under 2 liters to get me through the night and half way into tomorrow. Okay, so no food tonight and get out early in the a.m.

Day 2:
Got up, got packed, and got going. By now I had under a liter, 5 miles to go & 2,400ish ft to climb. I guess I was mentally prepared, as it all went just fine water-wise and just seemed like any other hike through the Catalinas. I finished up mid-afternoon, arriving to find a post hike BBQ happening. Kim, one of the trail stewards for the area was cooking burgers & dogs, she also had chips, cookies and lots of water (my favorite menu item at that time). I took her up on a burger which I adorned with a slice of spam and an envelope of tuna, and instantly vacuumed down. Now back to feeling sub-human, I continued to graze for the next hour or two. I hung out with the trail peeps until sunset, setup a functional, cold camp and zoinked-out.

Day 3:
04:43, Woke to a squawking turkey, immediately followed by a screeching owl. Not sure what was going on there, but my heart was pumping, so I got up. The turkey must have won (or at least survived) the earlier argument, as he started back up at around 05:00 and continued until the time I left.

I had to gamble on the best route down, due mainly to water issues, and ultimately decided on the Box Camp Trail. For those who have never done it, The Box Camp is 30% Disneyland (the upper) and 70% Hell, so a decision to take it is not made lightly. I won't go too much into it rather than to say that it's far worse now than my previous trip, and that I've probably made my last pass there.

By the time I hit the West Fork, it was in the 80 deg range, under full sunlight. I took a minute at the junction there to assess my egress. My god was it steep, and upon consulting my Guthook app, found that I had over 6 miles & 2,400 ft to go. $#$#*&^!!!, I said, then put my head down and made the final push. Miles don't much bother me, I can do them 16 hours a day, but there's something about climbing out to finish a hike that just isn't natural (to me anyway). Anywho, I made it out around 17:00, and as tough as the last few miles were, I was bummed out to be going home.

Sweetwater Preserve was PACKED with mountain bikers by 0630, so I shifted my plan to run the Sweetwater Trail instead (confused? Everything in the area has 'sweetwater' in the name). The 5.7 mile distance was the significant control for today's event, but the enormous difference in AEG threw everything out of wack.

Though a trail run was my intent, and it is listed as such, this one almost fell back into the 'hike' category. It was tougher than anticipated, for sure, but was the awakening of a new challenge that I plan to put a whoopin on at my very earliest opportunity.

Wanted to do 7 miles, but biffed it at around 3-1/4, so decided to cut it short. Five hours later, and I can neither feel or remember which ankle I tweaked.

08:50 start
Sunny, 94 - 102 deg, light breeze kept me cool.
Carried 100 oz (for consistent weight), drank ~30

The ironwoods in the Tucson Foothills are casting a subtle, lavender huge to the area lately.

Just in town for a few days. Went out to burn some energy for the 3 hours I had to spare. Excellent weather for mid-day, desert hiking.

After spending most of the previous 72 hours trapped in a moving vehicle, I really needed a leg stretcher. As wiped out as I was, I had a ton of energy simmering inside, so I just swung in to the TH and went. I must have been only semi-conscious, cuz the whole thing is kind of blurry now, but I know it was really windy. Other than that, it was pretty pleasant out and I was appreciative to be out.

Had a pretty good run, all things considered; Up in 01:29, down in 01:22, 85-ish deg, winds 15-ish w/ 25+ sustained along the upper ridge, drank 40 ozs of warm water, saw only 1 couple the whole trip.

Now if you'll excuse me, I really need a nap.

Weird day on the mountain. I arrived at the TH just after 07:00 to find the parking lot full. Not a big problem as this lot is private property, so 'Creative Parking' is the weekend norm. As I pulled in, I saw a large hiking group just departing, so I drug mt feet until 07:30 in hopes I would avoid trying to pass them. I figured that I would see quite a few people, but by the 2ish mile mark, had only come across a pair of moron, frat boyz, cawing like jungle birds into the canyon (still half in the bag from last night).

From there, it was peaceful all the way to Kimball, where I came upon a group of about 15 mutes. I barked out a general greeting, bold enough to cover everyone present, but most didn't even flinch. The few who did react, gave strange looks as if I were a Sasquatch in their living room or something.
Here's a picture I took of them... :scared: :o :( :--: :--: :--: :-s 8-[ :scared: :o :stop:
Then they gave me that look that a baby gets when it's filling up a diaper for you. I guess I arrived at just the wrong time, as there seemed to be a general panic that nobody's snap-book or insta-face was working because everyone was trying to wifi off the one Verizon customer who had service up there. It was total Millennial-Madness, so I quickly tagged it and split.

The trip down was much better. I crossed paths with a lot of friendly, trail type people, none of which were suffering smart phone withdrawals. I even stopped to chat with several of them (potential HAZers, some).

On the way home, I stopped for a Double-Jack w/ Cheese and a pair of Jack's Tacos (they make good insoles  ). I'm kind of thinking that this might be the end of the nice weather, so I'm glad I got out, even if it were on the weekend. :D

Out to push myself today. First decent night of sleep in over 5 months, so I was good to go. Started with a warm up, track run (something that must happen every Saturday morning), then off to the TH. I tied my best up time, but was 6 minutes behind my best down time. This time, there was no running, so all around, I think this as my best go at it. Mid 80s and mostly sunny while I was out.

Had to wait until 6:00 for it to be light enough, then I headed out clockwise on the Desperado Loop. Wanted to do a 7 miler, but had to settle for a shorter version. This is my first trail run in 5 months, so I wasn't too disappointed. Nice weather, saw no one else until the end, at the parking lot, where the mountain bike hoard awaited.

Short on time, but last chance for the week. Set a timer for 1 hour then turned back. Finished in exactly 2:00:00. My uphill and downhill speeds seem to be tightening up. Not sure if that's good or bad. Also, my average HR on the up averaged 147 bpm (I was pushing) for a solid hour. The overall hike averaged 135 bpm.
