Kimpton Shorebreak Hotel, Huntington Beach CA shorebreakhotel.com

Dogs are allowed at Huntington Dog Beach :next: dogbeach.org/locati ... html located about a mile northwest up the beach from the pier and our Kimpton Shorebreak Hotel base camp.

We've never been to Huntington Beach before and with fog friendly Kimpton Hotels never letting us down, decided to check it out. Also gives us to meet up with a business associate, Tim Smith, and his family. His “strategy” business is located in Huntington Beach :next: jpksummits.com/A101 ... .pdf and jpksummits.com/agen ... .pdf

Day 1 - Sunday March 22nd, 2015
FitBit totals = 5.71 miles, 110 AEG (11 floors)

On the road by 9am stopped for lunch at the Blythe CA Burger King. Our I-10 route was “challenged” by multiple construction delays leading us to agree that our return home route will be via I-8! Arrived at our "dog friendly" base-camp at the Shorebreak Kimpton Hotel :next: www.shorebreakhotel.com (I'm becoming partial to this eclectic collection of hotels, a nice alternative to my global business choice of Marriott Hotels...) located by the pier and on the waterfront in Huntington Beach CA. After checking into waterfront view room 429 we were joined by the Smith family, Tim, Tricia, and Garrett for dinner in the dog friendly restaurant located in our hotel :next: shorebreakhotel.com ... ala/
Finished up the day with a brisk stroll along the pier - nice! :next: [ description ]

Day 2 - Monday March 23rd, 2015

Day 3 - Tuesday March 24th, 2015
FitBit totals = 8.12 miles, 170 AEG (17 floors)

Lynn went for another morning jog along Huntington Beach. Dogs and I headed to Primo's for coffee and donuts. This time took the F-150 to Huntington Dog Beach so we could have all our beach gear available. Reasonable parking at $1/hr - $7.50 took us to 5pm. Walked north to Bolsa Chica State Beach :next: [ description ] Dinner at the local Burger King before checkingthe Tuesday a Farmers Market :next: huntingtonbeacheven ... html
Finished the day taking sunset and evening shots down by the pier...

Day 4 - Wednesday March 25th, 2015
FitBit totals = 6.25 miles, 100 AEG (10 floors)

Lynn went for another daybreak run along the waterfront. We took advantage of the noon-time check out before taking a scenic route back along the PCH to Carlsbad and CA78 to Borrego Springs. Puerto Blanco Drive – 51 mile loop

I started the New Year with a major setback – discovered my left eye had a 75% detached retina due to 5 small retinal tears. Surgery was performed January 6th by Dr. David Goldenberg and deemed successful. The 8 week recovery period required pretty much a physical shutdown and restricted me below 2500 feet. Travel to India, Boulder CO and La Jolla CA was postponed and I circled February 25th as my “release date”.

HAZ Forum question posed :next: viewtopic.php?t=8656 I've biked the 21 mile Ajo Mountain Drive [ photoset ] and look forward to the opportunity to do the complete Puerto Blanco Loop. Anyone else interested? Maybe a 51 mile loop around ORPI is my “release date” aspirational goal!

Received a reply from the ORPI Ranger Station;

The loop is open. It is actually only 41 miles if you don't take the spur road to Senita Basin. To start the drive begin at the visitor center to check road conditions. Take North Puerto Blanco (1 way road due to it being very narrow) to Pozo Nuevo and last South Puerto Blanco. There is a very sandy section on Pzo where you travel throguh the wash. It seems to be getting slightly better or we are just giving people enough driving instructions to make it through. High clearance is recommended.

Enjoy your visit.

Chief of Interpretation
Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

ORPI has to be one of my favorite places in the world – just an incredible mix of flora, fauna, geology, geography, history, with a mix of “war zone” and wild, wild, west. The majority of ORPI (see :next: nps.gov/orpi/index.htm ) has been closed to the public since 2003, a response to a tragic series of events ( see :next: nps.gov/orpi/learn/ ... .htm and hcn.org/articles/af ... pens ). I’ve had the opportunity to get into some of the closed sections of ORPI with Ranger Guided/Border Patrolled group hikes to Dripping Springs (see :next: [ photoset ] and [ photoset ] ) and Quitobaquito (see :next: [ photoset ] ). I was thrilled to hear that the national monument completely reopened late last year.

My latest check-up at the eye surgeon didn’t give me complete freedom (still have a gas bubble in left eye), but did get permission to start light activity. A check on ORPI weather conditions and pet restrictions (see :next: nps.gov/orpi/planyo ... .htm ), I booked off Thursday 2/26 from work and headed down to the Mexican border with Lynn and the dogs in my F-150 to hunt down some ORPI wildflowers…

Arrived at the ORPI Visitor Center about an hour later than planned due to a road closure on the highway to Maricopa that necessitated a roundabout approach down the I-10 to the I-8 and across to Gila Bend before traveling AZ85 to Lukeville. Checked into the ORPI Visitor Center, showed my NPS pass, and grabbed an updated map showing the complete Puerto Blanco Loop. Also said hello to Ranger Sue Walters and thanked her for the email exchanges. Think it was 11-ish when we started heading north on the Puerto Blanco 51 mile Loop (includes side treks to Quitobaquito and Senita Basin)…

Some Puerto Blanco Loop trivia;
Victoria Mine – Considered the most productive mine in ORPI and a testament to the 100 plus years of operation and $125K of production :next: organpipehistory.co ... ine/ Also see HAZ description :next: [ description ]
Baker Mine – tbd
Milton Mine – Built in 1914 through 1920, the Milton Mine produced gold and copper. The Loading Platform of the mine is one of the surviving structures associated with the mine. The loading platform was declared a National Historic Place September 1, 1978. See :next: nps.gov/orpi/learn/ ... 3286
Dripping Springs Mine – tbd
Golden Bell Mine – Presumed to be a claim by rancher Charlie Bell :next: [ description ]
International Boundary Monument - The monuments are constructed of painted masonry and mounted on a concrete base and includes an exclusive number. The border monuments are maintained and managed by the International Boundary and Water Commission. There are twelve total monuments along the ORPI border, 276 monuments total from coast to coast. See :next: archives.gov/public ... html and nps.gov/orpi/learn/ ... 3300
Quitobaquito Pupfish – See :next: organpipehistory.co ... ish/

7.35 miles and 530 AEG on FitBit. Redux of Puerto Blanco Loop avec mountain bike is a must. Will post photos when I get the chance…

Half-SoMo, carry-up, slo-ride...

After last night's stinker of a Yotes game, needed a socially acceptable to release some pent-up energy (albeit mostly frustration). Stopped many times to explore all the water damage still evident from earlier rains and the work that's begun for the Loop 2002 SoMo cut-through.

Half SoMo to balance yesterday's over indulgence.

What's up with the southwest petroglyph site (see photos)? Looks like an archaeological survey and maybe a move of the glyphs in advance of the Loop 2002 cut through South Mountain?

Stopped at the Loco Patron in Ahwatukee for a "cold cheap beer" on the last leg back home. Sat down at the bar and saw Arizona score and ASU's next set of downs without my existence ever being acknowledged. When a couple of guys sat next to me and got beers delivered by the bartender immediately, I knew it was time to leave... :( :( :(

La Jolla CA - November 2014

Kimpton Hotel, La Jolla CA
http://www.hotellajolla.com

Dogs are allowed at La Jolla Shores beach outside the hours of 9am to 4pm (winter hours Nov 1st thru Mar 31st) and outside 9am to 6pm otherwise. Confirmed by Kimpton Hotels. This is a redux visit after our March 2014 trek :next: http://hikearizona.com/photoset=29536 , this time for 4 days and 3 nights.

Day 1 - Sunday November 23rd, 2014
FitBit totals = 5.29 miles, 80 AEG (8 floors)

On the road by 8am and stopped for an early lunch at the Yuma Burger King. Arrived at our "dog friendly" base-camp at the La Jolla Shores Kimpton Hotel :next: http://www.hotellajolla.com (I'm becoming partial to this eclectic collection of hotels, a nice alternative to my global business choice of Marriott Hotels...). This is a nice alternative to our usual La Jolla "base-camp" at the historic Grande Colonial Hotel :next: http://hikearizona.com/photo=153369 and http://www.thegrandecolonial.com After checking into room 908 and enjoying some of the ocean views from our hotel room balcony, we decided to take in the setting sun from our balcony view...

Day 2 - Monday November 24th, 2014
FitBit totals = 5.50 miles, 40 AEG (4 floors)

Lynn went for a dawn jog along La Jolla Shores Beach while I took the dogs. Headed over to La Jolla Village and Cove waterfront and poked around the tide pools with low tide peaking at about 3:30pm. Sundown/evening walk along La Jolla Shores Beach...

Day 3 - Tuesday November 25th, 2014
FitBit totals = 5.67 miles, 80 AEG (8 floors)

Lynn went for another dawn jog along La Jolla Shores Beach. I met up with Navin Govind, CEO of Aventyn, at the local Starbucks for a lunch time discussion :next: http://www.aventyn.com Burger King run to the Mission Beach district followed by a stroll along the Mission Beach walk/bike way. Waited until "dog time on beach" (that would be 4pm) to take in the sunset along La Jolla Shores Beach. Must have seen about half a dozen pro photographers out taking portraits of clients in the golden hour while using the surf and Scripps Pier as backdrop.

Day 4 - Wednesday November 26th, 2014
FitBit totals = 4.15 miles, 120 AEG (12 floors)

Lynn went for another daybreak run along the waterfront. Took advantage of the noon-time check out before taking a scenic route back via Anza-Borrego Springs.
Backroad route :next:
CA52 east to Santee
CA67 north to Lakeside and further north to Ramona
CA78 east to Santa Ysabel
CA79 north to S2 (San Filipe Rd)
S2 east to S22 (Montezuma Valley - Borrego Hwy) to Borrego Springs Anza Borrego Desert State Park :next: http://hikearizona.com/decoder=1304
S22 from Borrego Springs (Borrego - Salton Seaway) to CA86 at Salton City
CA86 south to Brawley
CA76 and CA111 south to join onto I-8 at El Centro
Hiked a bit of the CRHT/Jasper Trail where it crosses S22 (Montezuma Valley Road). This area has had a burn in recent years. Interesting views of the Imperial Valley and distant Salton Sea from this trail as it follows a ridgeline. Dropped by the ABDSP Head Quarters in Borrego Springs gathering some beta for a future trek…
