We started from 104th St TH and headed up the Bell Pass trail. It was great to see how green everything was all over the McDowells. Once over Bell Pass we headed down the Prospector trail to the road and then up Thompson Peak. On the ridgeline towards the top of Thompson Peak we encountered a bees nest on the ground right along the road.

After negotiating the bees and lunch on Thompson Peak we headed back down. We decided to loop around on Dixie Mine Trail over to the Coachwhip Trail and then back past the Windmill trail junction. From here it was back up the Windmill trail to Bell Pass and back out to 104th.

The drive feels like the longest part of the trip driving in on Seven Springs Road to Sheep Bridge. One the way out we took Bloody Basin to I-17 back to town and surprisingly it was only 12 minutes longer.

Starting at the Sheep Bridge about 8am we soon hit the junction of Willow Springs trail and Dutchman Grave trail and then headed up the Dutchman Grave trail. The first 5 or 6 miles is relatively flat and easy although the trail has deteriorated so we had to watch for the cairns. There are some really nice big cairns along the trail especially at some of the creek crossings around Dutchman Grave Spring and Sycamore Creek which all had nice seasonal flow. Eventually the trail gains elevation over a series of ridgelines and saddles before arriving at Mountain Spring. Much of the area burned during the Willow Fire but some of Mountain Spring survived to include several large Oaks. There is also an old trough which was full of water at the time.

After leaving Mountain Spring we headed down the Willow Springs trail which has a bit of climb out of Mountain Spring but once over that it's all downhill to the Sheep Bridge. Wanted to check out Willow Spring but the sun was low in the sky and had to make tracks for the car. Considering the drive this is probably better as a backpack or car camp.

This trip is a long loop starting at the Barnhardt TH. From the Barnhardt TH we took the Half Moon trail north towards the Rock Creek TH. The first 3 miles of this trail are in good shape with 3 creek crossings that were running with all the recent rain and snow. After the second crossing the trail gets harder to follow and there is everybody's favorite catclaw to contend with. Eventually the trail makes its way out of the last canyon crossing and up onto a ridge where it continues until connecting with the Rock Creek Trail. There is a sign post with no sign on it marking this junction. My GPS read about 4.5 miles at the sign post.

From here we followed the Rock Creek Trail up Center Creek which had really good water flowing. Its about a mile up Center Creek before the trail leaves the canyon with some quick switchbacks that take you up on the ridge above. From here the trail follows the ridge line with great views of the Mazatzal high country above. This part of the trail had been cleared and maintained nicely so no problems following the trail. However, the nicely maintained trail abruptly ends just before it starts up through a rockier section. We had the GPS route from coanbru to follow and without this we would have wasted more time looking for trail signs. Despite having the route it was very slow going with all the brush and generally poor trail conditions. But by far the highlight of this area was a waterfall at the top of the rocky section which is the upper reaches of Rock Creek drainage. The waterfall was about 25 feet with several nice pools. After taking a short break we continued up the not so great trail towards the Matatzal Divide. There are a few sections in this part that are completely washed out so having a route or knowing where the trail should go helps a lot.

On the divide at 7077 elevation we took another break contemplating how long it took to come up the Rock Creek trail. The elevation alone is a decent feat but when you add in the trail conditions it makes this hike all the more challenging. Thinking the worst was over we started down the trail to link up with the AZT divide trail. This section was probably worse than the previous but fortunately not very long. I'm guessing the Forest Service has no intention of maintaining this trail which is unfortunate because it goes through some beautiful country.

Once we reached the AZT it seemed like a super highway and we made up for lost time. With all the recent snow and rain the water was abundant with even the smallest washes flush with water. About 1.5 miles down the AZT we reached the Horse Camp Seep area which is on the North Fork of Deadman Creek just before if drops off into an impressive canyon. But before it drops off there is a great open rocky terrace that the creek runs through with several impressive waterfalls that have fairly easy access. We took a long break here and enjoyed the waterfalls and great pools in this area. Besides the waterfall in Rock Creek this section was the highlight of the loop.

After resting and taking some pics we headed down the AZT towards the Chilson Camp/Spring area and eventually over to the AZT and Barhardt trail junction. From here a quick break and then down the Barnhardt trail to the car. Unfortunately since we took so long getting up the Rock Creek Trail we ended up hiking the end in the dark.

We hoped for no rain and it was nice during the first part of the hike. However, before we could hike we had to cross Slate Creek which from all the recent rain was flowing at a pretty good clip. Once across we started up the old road section and for about the first hour 45 mins it was rather pleasant. Unfortunately the rain started about half way up the old road section and didn't stop the rest of the time. But no worries we trudged onward to the top and even saw a fair amount of snow once we reached the new road section around 6.5 miles. The top was considerably colder than the TH but still not quite cold enough for snow. One of the buildings on top had a nice overhang where we grabbed a quick snack before heading back down. Fully charged and motivated to get down to a warm dry vehicle we made good time. By this time it had been raining non-stop so even the smallest wash had plenty of running water. Nice to see that in Arizona! And of course by the time we arrived back at Slate Creek it was running about 50% higher than before. So a little more excitement right at the end!

It was a long day but really nice weather for a hike after the recent deep freeze. Ran into Tough Boots and John9L at La Barge Spring...nice to meet you guys! The trip was an extension of the Marsh Valley Loop by adding the Bluff Spring Trail over to the Terrapin Trail and connecting with Marsh Valley Loop at the Needles Cutoff Trail.

This was a great loop hike. Very cold start with temps at or below freezing but refreshing to hike in cold weather. We started at Gateway and hiked to Toms Thumb trail up the very steep switchbacks. Then over to the Lookout Trial which is a short section adjacent to the Toms Thumb area. Then we hiked back down to Toms Thumb - East End area and enjoyed the great boulders in this section. From there it was down to the Windmill Trail and headed east towards the Fort McDowell Regional Park to link up with the Coachwhip Trail connecting to the Dixie Mine Trail. Some really great Saguaros in this section of the Regional Park but we followed Dixie Mine back into the Preserve and linked up with the Prospector Trail. From there it was up to Bell Pass and then out the last 3.3 miles to Gateway.

We did Vultee Arch the day before and it snowed but today everything cleared off for a cold crisp morning. The upper part of Long Canyon is great with views, a few sandstone windows, and awesome cliffs. It's not really clear where the trail actually ends because there are several routes leading off different directions as the defined trail starts to fade out. If you were really adventurous it might be possible to find a route to the top of the mesa. Great canyon!

Cold sleet/snowy day but that just added to the snow covered cliffs above as we ventured up the canyon. Of course the arch did not disappoint either.
