I've been sick for a week so it was nice to be out hiking again. Still wasn't feeling 100%, so I didn't want anything too challenging. Got to the Dreamy Draw TH around noon and it was actually somewhat empty. Hardly saw anyone on the trails. Pretty warm out there but it was a little windy most of the time. Was hoping to see a chuckwalla or two, but nothing today.

It was nice to be back out there after having to take 4 days off. Took Guadalupe Ridge to the stone house, took the road back to the Beverly Canyon saddle, and doubled back on Guadalupe Ridge. Very warm out there. Saw a small rattler (less than 2 feet long) along the side of the dirt road. My 3rd one this season.

Guadalupe Ridge to Beverly Canyon, Pima West Loop and the wash back to the TH. The gnats are coming out already. :yuck:

Me and my girlfriend took Guadalupe Ridge to the Beverly Canyon saddle and doubled back. Thought this would be a bit more AEG.

Walked over to San Gabriel Ridge from the Pima Canyon TH via Desert Classic. Kind of a long, boring walk over there. San Gabriel Ridge is a fun trail though. Took that to Guadalupe Ridge and down to the Beverly Canyon saddle, then down to the dirt road and back. Nice hike other than the boring Desert Classic part.

Guadalupe Ridge to the stone house and doubled back. A lot of people on the first mile of Guadalupe Ridge today...much more than usual.

Got to the TH a few minutes after 5pm. Not a lot of people out. The middle section of Ranger was loaded with brittlebush beetles. Me and my girlfriend learned that they apparently like to chase you. We didn't really see any of them towards the top of Ranger or for the rest of the hike. Weird how they tend to concentrate in a specific area. Didn't see any other hikers at all until we got to Telegraph Pass. I guess our pace was slower than I expected, because it was pitch black by the time we got to the Kiwanis TH, and we didn't bring a light. We decided to walk the road back to the Ranger TH rather than hiking Los Lomitas in the total darkness. Honestly, walking the road was no worse than Los Lomitas.

Short loop combining Guadalupe Ridge, San Gabriel Ridge, and Desert Classic. My first time on San Gabriel. Nice, short trail. Probably more fun going up than down.

Me and my girlfriend took a friend of mine on an easy hike. Pretty warm out there this morning, and the trails were pretty busy. Did a figure 8 loop with Brown's Mountain Trail, Upper Ranch, and Wrangler back to the TH. Had never been on Upper Ranch or Wrangler. Nothing too exciting but nice walks through some healthy desert scenery. There was a rattlesnake crossing the path right at the trailhead with several people crowding around watching it go by. 2nd one I've seen so far this season. Decent amount of wildflowers in the area but nothing spectacular.

CW loop starting from the 7th ave TH. Got out there around 10:30am and it was already pretty warm. By noon it was downright hot. There was a nice breeze every once in a while though. I know a lot of people consider 80+ "perfect" weather, but to me perfect hiking weather is 60-70. It's too early for it to be this hot!

Not a lot of people on the trails but still a few more than I expected on a weekday. I went up and down the paved side of North Mountain, which greatly increases the mileage of this loop, but I don't find it much fun going down the steep south side full of loose rocks. My toe sprain feels better today, and I managed to avoid stubbing it on anything this time. :)

CCW loop starting from the 32nd st TH. My first time being here on a weekday so it was also my first time actually finding a spot in the parking lot. Only a few other cars there. A little weird actually seeing these trails fairly empty. I started after 1pm and was thinking it'd be really hot, but the cloud cover and breeze kept it nice.

When I was on the 200 trail I saw a nasty looking black and red beetle (which I now know is a brittlebush beetle) crossing the trail, so I stopped to try and take a picture of it when another one flew onto my shirt. Well I looked over and 3 or 4 brittlebushes right next to me were CRAWLING with these things. Like dozens of them on each bush. Really weird as I saw dozens and dozens of brittlebushes today, and these were the only ones that had these things on them.

I sprained my big toe a few days ago and this was my first hike since then. My toe felt almost back to normal and it was smooth sailing until halfway through the 202 trail I stubbed my toe on a rock again. It hurt so bad I just had to stop for a few minutes and let the pain subside. I limped my way back to the TH...thankfully I only had about a mile left.

Took a couple friends who aren't hikers...started around 10:30am. It was pretty warm out there but there was a nice breeze. Not a lot of people out there, being a weekday. We started out on 1A CW, took that to 1C and to the 302 junction. Planned on doing a loop with 302, 1B and back on 1A, but when we got to the 302 junction they decided they weren't up to the steep climb up to the saddle. They encouraged me to go up there, so I ran up and back down and met back up with them, and we just went back the way we came. They still enjoyed the hike but I probably should've picked something a little easier for them.

On my way back down 302 I stubbed my big toe really hard and took a little tumble. My toe felt mostly OK the rest of the hike back, but it started hurting big time an hour or two later. Sprained it. :( Will have to take a few days off to recover.

My first visit to this park. Got to the TH a little after 5pm. Just a few other cars there. I intended to do the Circumference Trail but I wanted a little extra distance and AEG, so I added in the Ridgeline Trail along the way. Did the circumference loop CCW.

The first mile was extremely flat and wide. A lot of green ground cover and a ton of orange wildflowers along this section though. The ridgeline trail is barely on the ridgeline at all, lol, but I guess there really isn't much of a ridgeline here to follow anyways. Still a bit of a bummer since ridgeline trails are usually my favorite. Most of the AEG was very gradual... there was only one sort of steep climb on the SE corner of the loop. For the most part I was just on autopilot on this hike.

I guess I underestimated the length of this hike after adding Ridgeline, because I ended up back at my car in the pitch black. My only thought as I was heading back once the clock struck 7pm was, oh crap, I forgot to check what time this park closes. Really hoped I wasn't locked in. Got back to the parking lot and I was the last car there, but the gate was still open. Thank goodness...

Got out there at almost 5pm and the Dreamy Draw parking lot was still packed. Probably because there was a huge party going on at the ramadas. Pretty toasty when I started out. Trail 100 :next: 1A :next: 1B :next: 302 :next: 1C :next: some unmarked trails around trail 100 :next: 220 back to the TH. Didn't really have a route in mind today, just kinda wandered. Checked out a couple unmarked trails I'd never been on before. Not a lot of people on the trails at all. Some of these trails can get crowded, but there's still plenty of solitude to be had. Stopped for a minute and enjoyed the sunset and the silence. Nice hike.

Same hike as yesterday: Guadalupe Ridge to the stone house and back. The TH was pretty empty... I love Fridays. :) Hardly anyone on Guadalupe Ridge. Pretty much the same pace as yesterday. Stopped and talked to a guy at the stone house for a few minutes about the rattlesnakes we'd seen.

Took Guadalupe Ridge down to where it meets the National at the stone house, and doubled back. This is probably the quickest way I've found to get 1000+ AEG from the Pima Canyon TH. Nice ups and downs the whole way too for a good steady workout. Great hike.
