Out creaking around in Saguaro again, going a little farther each time.

Windy out today. Now the pricklies are blooming.

Finally back out for a creaky hike in the Tucson Mountain foothills. I didn't actually make it all the way out to Cactus Canyon, but I will.

Felt great to be out in the desert again. The cacti are blooming pretty heartily, which is always nice.

Man, I missed the smell of hiking out in the desert.

Out early today for a quick hike. The early morning saw chilly temps, much wind and some very wild skies of blue mixed with threatening clouds. In other words, it was pretty weird out. Very cool though.

This little loop has a bit of everything, if you don't have all day.

Overall, it was a unique morning and I had quite a good time.

Out early this morning with my buddy Phil on the Pontatoc Ridge trail. The early start time and mild smattering of clouds made for an amazing sky earlier today, as blue as it gets. It was pretty cool when we started off but quickly warmed up.

Always a great little climb up to the summit, short and tough. What a great day out today 8)

What a day in the north Tucson Mountains. I love this area. Every time I come here something cool happens. Today was no different with my Great Horned Owl encounter. I scared it up as I was hiking (or falling if you will) down the ridgeline and thought it was the hawk I heard earlier. Only when I hiked by the the cave and let my eyes adjust did I realize I was starting at a massive owl. Wow!

Weather could not have been nicer today. I actually met a few nice folks up on Panther Peak, which is relatively surprising for this neck of the woods. As nice as today was I definitely paid the price....knee is bad and getting worse. I hope my surgery will help.

I must say if you are ever in the mood for an off route desert ramble and you are in the area, you really can't go wrong in the northern Tucson Mountains. Yes I am biased, but they totally rock.

Out today in some crazy weather. One minute it's cloudy, dark and cool. The next there are patches of blue sky and it's relatively warm. In other words, it was awesome.

As I noted in my original write-up there are quite a few ways and routes to take up Pusch peak. I did a variation from my last trip and again came up with near 4.6 miles on my GPS, so you can figure on giving or taking up to 1/2 mile each way depending on how you go. Sandiway has found a shorter route I think. Either way you still gotta grind out the elevation in a pretty short climb. By the top I was stumbling like I'd had one too many. That was also because Phil and I went up about as fast as we could, the weather was really perfect to just climb like madmen. So we did

I had forgot how much this climb can kick your butt. What a great climb with spectacular views. Very short drive to the trailhead too. We saw nobody today.

I've wanted to do this for some time....climb up onto the summit of the Guard, the prominent peak just east of and looking over Finger Rock. My buddy Phil and I went for it today.

This is a blast. A tough, STEEP climb up to the backside of Prominent Point. The route is easy enough to follow, and some hearty soul has cairned to route quite well too. You gain a good 1500 feet or so after dropping down into the wash as you climb up the other side of the canyon. When you break out onto the saddle at the back base of Prominent Point, the views down into upper Pima Canyon are absolutely outstanding. Looking over at Table Mountain in profile and the Coyotes Teeth is just wicked. :o

The climb up the Guard can be done without ropes but it is not easy and there certainly is some exposure and considerable rock climbing to do. That being said it is very fun, you just have to be careful. The views from the top rock. The finger is a little hard to see though, as it is slightly below you and in profile against the adjacent peak wall.

Beautiful day in Tucson today, even a little snow left up along the way.

Out in the snow with Phil today. We hiked up Romero Canyon until we lost the trail in the snow at about 5200 feet, about 1 mile from the saddle or so.

Today was such a great day. The temps were perfect, probably between 45-55 all day with plenty of sunshine. There was a lot of snow up in the higher country and clouds mingling with the peaks.

The upper reaches of the Romero Canyon can present route finding issues in ideal situations, we decided not to get cute in the snow.

Absolutely perfect day. 8)

My climbing buddy Phil is back in town for a little while, so it's time to go hiking in Pusch Ridge. Climbed Mt. Kimball today, first time here in a while for me. This is one of the steeper canyons in Pusch Ridge and the way down remains just a brutal butt-kicker. The views from the top completely rock.

It was windy and pretty cold up on the peak, warmed up big time on the way down.

Finally saw a tarantula...for the first time in nearly 2000 miles in Arizona. How cool!

Tough, tough hike. It's time to get my legs back because the plan is to climb Mt. Lemmon again before he leaves. I swore I'd never do that again after the first time....I knew I was full of it.

Fantastic day in the Pinalenos with Preston today. Our original plan was foiled...there was too much snow/ice on the Swift Trail to get up to the Dutch Henry Trailhead. So we made a spur of the moment decision to climb Ladybug Peak instead since the trailhead was nearby.

We unknowingly climbed up into a winter wonderland. Clear bright skies led us up into the higher elevations, and around 7000 feet or so we encountered our first patch of snow. There was more and more along the trail as we climbed to the peak. What an awesome experience. Footing was a little dicey on a couple of the switchbacks, but overall not too bad. This trail is a steep climb gaining well over 3500 feet in total. It's through pristine forest the whole way. From the summit the views are typically outstanding.

We flew down through the soft snow, marveling all along at the beauty of the snowy Pinalenos.

The day didn't work out as originally planned, but I don't know if it could have ended up any better. :D

I've been hoarding Ventana Canyon for a while, a delayed gratification type of thing. Why? Because I knew it would be my favorite Catalina front range canyon climb once I finally did it. I've always heard that Ventana was awesome; very rugged, wild and lush. Well, all of these attributes are totally true. I had been getting antsy to do a big climb and figured it was finally time for this one.

The trail is surprisingly easy to follow all the way up. Someone dedicated soul has placed the most extenstive cairn network I have seen in a while and this is quite helpful as the trail makes multiple canyon crossings.

The window is sweet! It was windy and cold up there. Had to bust out my new fleece. Went beyond the window a short ways and scrambled up to the summit overlooking the Window. The views in every direction are among the best in the Catalinas. It was cool to scramble around and explore a bit in the high country up there.

I did not see anyone until I was about 2/3 of the way down. Then there was quite a few people. Very nice day.

Got a late start and didn't have the most energy today, so I decided to jolt myself back into awareness with this tough little local favorite. I like this trail for a few key reasons...

1. Much less crowded than it's more famous neighbor, yet still offers awesome views of Finger Rock nearly the whole way.

2. There is a cool little cholla patch about half way up that I love to take photos at, they frame Finger quite nicely.

3. Great tough climb for a short distance.

These reasons won me over today, a very nice day in Tucson. The informal scramble route to the summit is always a blast. The last little stretch on the grassy ridge is actually getting a bit overgrown.

A rugged bushwack into the Organ Pipe backcountry and climb of a steep, exposed peak with no name. What were we doing? Having a blast. Organ Pipe is as beautiful as the desert gets in my opinion. I think off-trail exploration is part of the draw to this area, though there are also some awesome trails and routes described on this page.

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and hiking with Joe and Preston yesterday at Ash Canyon/Bassett Peak in the Galiuros. It turned out to be a beautiful day and sensational hike with colors and views to knock your socks off. The top of Bassett Peak is as good of a vista as I've seen in Arizona. This is one of the best hikes in the state for me. I cannot say enough.

Thanks to RedRoxx for the beta on the hike and getting there. Unfortunately I did not get to meet her, don't know how that happened :?: Maybe next time (because there will certainly be a next time).

It was also very cool to meet Suzaz, Desertgirl and Matt.

I look forward to seeing the photos from everyone. They will surely rock. I'll probably keep my amateur junk to myself

What a day!

Finally completed my goal on the Butterfly trail today, to climb Mt. Bigelow from the Butterfly trailhead. This ends up being a much tougher climb than you'd think. There's a lot of up and down along the way. Total trip is 11 miles and 3150 feet. It's no tip-toe either. This trail has changed a lot since my last time out here. MANY trees have fallen since July. Also the trail is a bit overgrown. I was clawing and falling and plowing the whole day...good times.

There is pretty good color up in the Catalinas right now, all things considered. Water was running nicely along the creek and the falls were the strongest I've ever seen them. Still some flowers hanging on here and there too.

The views from the top of Bigelow are very nice. I'm glad I finally made this climb, I've been turned around for a variety of reasons in the past.
