Foot pain caused me to change my voluminous weekend plans to a scenic drive and photo session. I love that area out there.

My first trip to Sunset Crater/Lenox. Squeezed it in while my daughter was in dive meet warmups! The slope wouldn't be nearly as difficult if it wasn't like going through very small snow drifts.

Actually this TL was from our campsite on Milk Ranch Rd. to the Milk Ranch highpoint, a little non-descript peak with 293 feet of prominence. We had camped there Saturday and Saturday night.

We paddled a bit at the CC Cragin (Blue Ridge) Reservoir. It is SO beautiful there.

Took my non-outdoors son for an overnight backpack last night. In all that wind. It was WINDY! Saw a rattlesnake about 20 feet from where we camped, two burro and one javelina.

Wowza. 1910 is one of the toughest, crumbliest, easy mountains that I've ever climbed. It's the worst, nastiest grus you've seen. There is very little palo verde or rocks to hold onto. It was a fun one.

And then the real fun began...

If you're gonna hike in 'Zona
You're gonna have to get used to snakes
You may not see 'em but you'll hear the sound they make
They don't want to hurt you
But they will give a little shake
If you're gonna hike in 'Zona
You better get use to snakes.

I left 1910 and instead of walking down the powerline corridor, decided to just take the shortest directest route. About half way between 1910 and Ochoa, I spotted about a 3 foot long western diamondback. It was just stretched out. It had ZERO interest in me. In fact, I thought it actually might be dead but wondered if rigor would allow it to be stretched out like it was. It barely even acknowledged my presence as I was standing literally about 5 feet away from it.

Now...every stick is a snake. I left him be and made my way on through the buffel grass and started the MUCH easier Ochoa summit. I quickly gained the summit and headed down.

Only to get the loudest, closest buzz that I've ever gotten from a rattlesnake. I couldn't have been more than a couple feet away. I did the oh :pk: a snake, flying leap and after about 20 feet, froze. Eventually I spotted enough movement to see him. It was I believe, now a Tiger Rattlesnake. Small head and the bands.

The western was almost yellow, living down in the flat buffel grass area.

Fascinating.

The rest of the hike was completely uneventful.

A great day.

This was my first completely off trail, solo adventure since I got sick on February 15th. It was just like riding a bike, LOL. I did fine, wasn't really tired and could have done another 5-8 miles, easily. Was 70 degrees at the TH and 86 when I got back to the car at 9:30.

On a bad note, Route Scout didn't work so I'm estimating my miles and AEG. Oh well. 2219 is a typical Phoenix off-trail peak. Just difficult enough to be moderately fun. You're skiing down on ankle breakers, the medium rocks that I hate.

The foxtails were knee high so every stick was a snake.

Looking over at Saddleback you can see multiple routes and its a pretty cool looking peak but the true interesting peak is Peak 2210 next to 2219. I tried to assess a route up that wouldn't get me killed for next time.

Saw a humongous jackrabbit but not one snake. A vulture flew over me so close I could almost touch it.

Forty-five days ago, I almost died.

If you're wondering where I've been, or even if you haven't, here I am.

On February 15th, I began to have severe back pain.

Thinking that it was just a kidney stone or infection, I tried to go to bed. By bed time, I was in agony. By midnight, I was in trouble. After passing out going down the stairs, in the dark, alone, I made it down stairs and huddled with a blanket. My teeth were chattering from the pain being so bad. But worse, I couldn't breathe. By this time, I was gasping for air.

Now I'm sure some of you that know me would be shocked to hear that I argued not to go to the Emergency Room. /sarcasm but yes its true.

An hour later I'd be told that A. I might have leukemia (I didn't) B. I have pneumonia (I didn't) and C. I have a grapefruit sized pulmonary embolism in my left lung (I did).

An ambulance took me to an actual hospital where I spent a good bit of time in the ICU.

Today was my first meaningful hike since early February. I've missed it a ton. Today, sadly kicked my butt but I made it to the summit. I'm not taking anything for granted anymore.

It was 37 at the TH and probably 20 MPH sustained winds with 35 MPH gusts. Felt good to get out as I've been in a rut. Was a little bit of ice on parts of the trail and you could tell the trail had been frozen at times. After hitting 2191 I took the trail toward 3465 for a bit then turned around. No 3465 summit today.

With all the recent rains, the desert is SO SO green right now. Made a nice loop combining the Ocotillo and Sidewinder trail.

Managed to squeeze ~1000 ft of AEG out of Tramonto Peak and the extremely chossy ridgeline for the adjacent peak. Shows you can enjoy yourself right out of your backdoor. If you try this route, be careful on the side slope to the second peak, it is extremely slick and loose.

Nice peak. Well marked trails with cairns that I think I could see from Castle Hot Springs Rd. Saw two wild burro and six javelina. Also saw a location where I am pretty sure that someone with a rock hammer was looking for gold. I'm 95% sure of it... Didn't see a soul the entire time.

Unfortunately got a flat tire on Castle Hot Springs Rd. but at least it was on the paved portion! :? :? :?

Planned out a route bagging four Lists of John peaks. It was a great morning to be out. Not too cold, certainly not too hot. In order of difficulty beginning with easy to hard would be 2318, Cholla, 2334 and 2340.

Frankly, 2340 is the type of peak that a year and a half ago that I would have aborted. Although there isn't really any exposure, though the peak is small it is very steep and literally no way to get your footing. It's some of the worst scree that I've ever seen as far as your feet sliding. But I found a way. Mainly using what I call my Tarzan method, where I just try and find connective palo verde bushes to move between, using the bushes as leverage.

On the way down from 2340, I saw a functioning (appeared to be) vacuum cleaner in a wash without a mark on it. It appeared to have just been placed there.

Weird.

Saw two wild burro and a cow.
