W O W...

This is an incredible Arizona day hike. I'd been dreaming about this peak for over a year. So today with in-laws getting on my nerves, other people getting on my nerves, I was looking for something to keep me out of the house much longer than normal. So I dialed this one up...

I parked at the Cave Creek TH at the Seven Springs Campground. Since it was about 5:45 when I got there and pitch dark (and also 40 degrees), I couldn't see well enough to know that I could have parked several other places back down the road, shortening my hike. Oh well. Extra miles and a few AEG.

I did the standard approach. I had originally planned to just assault the Quien Sabe Peak Ridgeline from the 246 trail up what was designated as a wash on the topo, but that looked pretty daunting. Then I changed plans to continue to go Skunk Creek Trail and intersect with the Quien Sabe Trail on the backside of the ridge. Alas, I got impatient and left that plan at a place that looked doable. I made it up to the little prairie and then to the final push to what becomes the ridgeline. After ~30 minutes, I had made the final traverse of the ridgeline and I could see what was going to be the summit.

The summit block is a little anti-climactic but I was very glad to have gained it. It must have been in the mid 30s at the summit and there were so many clouds, I actually was hoping to see a random flake but alas, no.

Then I made a fateful (for my legs) decision. Go back the way I came, which was a known route, not really that steep but would take me ALL THE WAY back down the ridge, OR descend off the summit block down what was the actual wash that leads to Quien Sabe Spring.

Let's see the spring he said. It will be fun he said.

It wasn't.

I was literally crashing and surfing down the thickest catclaw that I have ever seen. My legs don't even look like legs anymore they are so scratched, gouged, and bloody!

Finally, I got down near the spring proper.

It was a :pk: rusty pipe. Not even a spring or any water etc. S O A B.

But, at least I was close to where I had originally hiked and back on the 246 trail.

After that, it was pretty much all downhill from there and I was down near the Cartwright Ranch in no time. If that was a real ranch, I'd like to work there as a ranch hand. That little valley there is beautiful.

So, all in all a GREAT hike. This was a top 5 outdoor experience for me in Arizona. For sure.

Nice little post-Thanksgiving hike. Made my second summit of Brown's and finished the Cone Loop.

Was a little crowded but...

Had my first oh no moment where I discovered I forgot my headlamp. So I used the stars, moon, and a tiny cheap Chinese flashlight until there was just enough light to not trip.

I should just about have finished the New River quad after this peak although I just remembered I have Wild Burro Mesa yet to bag.

Doe was easy but Peak 2762 is very steep at the top.

All in all a good day and a good time in the mountains.

Two MORE Lists of John Peaks. Began with my headlamp at hard dark and reached the flat area just near Union Hills Peak just at sunrise and it was beautiful.

The first peak, 2144 seemed to never end and while not hard, I was starting from probably 1550 feet so it was a decent climb. Peak 2111 to make it more difficult, I created a route that would basically summit and traverse a ridgeline which would connect up with the summit after a shorter climb than from down at the base. Someone had taken a bathroom scale to the top! LMAO.

Down I went, hitting Great Horned Owl which wraps back around Union Hills Peak and the rest of the hike was uneventful.

Another great day in the New River Mountains. Two more Lists of John peaks!!! :y: :y: :y:

Was very windy on Peak 2740. Like I could barely stand windy... Saw no animals except more target shooters and ATVers. If you hike out here, be careful.

Another Lists of John Peak, this time Sweat Peak. A pretty good hike and climb. If you notice a weird deviation on my route back I was going around two Arizona good ol' boys out shootin' no doubt disappointed that Barry O hasn't implemented Sharia Law yet, or taken their guns away. If he's gonna, he better do it quick... :y: :y: :y:

The trough at Sweat Spring was full to overflowing but I'd definitely filter it...

Well after a restless night of pouring over spreadsheets and topo maps and frantically hitting the F5 button on Lists of John :y: I was somehow able to drag myself out of bed to climb Stewart Mountain, Peak 2961 and Peak 2931. I used Joe's route from years ago and up I went. Great, my favorite type of mountains, loose pea gravel...

But I made it first up 2961, down, then over to Stewart Mountain then over to 2931. 2931 marked what's been a long string for me of the shortest mountain being the hardest. It seemed the steepest and had the loosest scree.

The ~1 mile boulder hopping chute down between Peaks 2961 and 2931 held a first for me. I could feel a rock I was standing on slightly vibrating from I believe a rattlesnake below it. I looked, but never saw it and kept moving. The smooth granite boulders in the wash/draw/chute are particularly slippery and my shoes are getting low on tread so that was fun.

All in all, a great day.

Barrett

Wow! What a nice time to get out. We made camp Friday night about 4:30 PM. After @Barrett set up his speakers and we erected our ode to Burning Man, a spinning fire mobile(don't worry kids, we had a fire extinguisher) and left our campsite better than we found it. We turned in for the night but not before seeing TWO tarantulas in our camp. I think they were attracted to all of @SpiderLegs bad gas. We heard some coyotes but they never came close, probably because they hated the gas. :-k

We were up before first light as three old guys can't sleep. We first went up a steep route to Pikes Peak, then over to the Mill Benchmark, and then over to Peak 3392. We made our way down one of the steepest descents I've ever made and found ourselves back out into the Morgan City Wash and back to the truck.

Thanks @Barrett for the time and effort you put into planning this hike. :yr:

A great time was had by all...

Just another Lists of John 300 ft of prominence peak. I was serenaded to the dulcet tones of the gun obsessed as they wasted their money at Ben Avery. I ascended the easiest route, but descended the most difficult way (very relative term).

Nothing spectacular but with the Pikes and Hiero Ridgeline tomorrow I just wanted to bag one peak this AM.

Nice view of the Bad Boy House.

What a great peak and my first time utilizing my brand new shiny Arizona State Land Permit... :-$ :-$

I ascended Table Mountain off of Table Mesa Rd. (confusing right?) by utilizing the route from the northwest. I had utilized Caltopo's Gradient Slope Shading to plan my route since there weren't any on HAZ. That and ability to read a topo... :y: I made my way up and it really wasn't too hard, there's about 10-15 feet of rim to boulder hop and climb. I'd call it probably Class 2.5 as it is not really scrambling but close-ish.

I climbed over, went to the summit, took some pics and decided for a challenge to descend unplanned on the back side which from topo and the gradient slope shading was a lot steeper, for a challenge. Also it would save me about two miles going back down the way I came and then all the way around the mountain to get to my second objective, Peak 2934. Prior to the summit assault, I stopped by the Hohokam wall ruins that are on the backside of Table Mountain.

About 1/3 of the way down, I had to break out the ye olde butt scooch as it was getting pretty hard to stand! But I made it down, connected with the jeep road and made my way over to Peak 2934. Peak 2934 despite being 100+ foot taller was pretty easy. It does have a false summit at least and there were some scrambling opportunities that I played around on, although you could have gone around them.

I left a brand new summit register on top of Peak 2934 and made my way back down. @SpiderLegs, there were bees aplenty at the top of 2934... When I got back down, I got my first taste of very likely having rounds shot over me as I could hear them impacting in the mountainside. NEW RIVER!!!

Uneventful back to the car except I did have to do a pretty steep descent to get off the powerline corridor to get back to the car.

All in all a great day of peak bagging and a fairly common summit mixed with a very obscure one.

After two attempts to find a route that wasn't steep and on pea gravel where I was sliding back three feet for every one I was taking, I gave up this summit attempt. Plus, my piriformis issue is unfortunately back and all in all not a good day. Grrr...
