Started at 6:10am, so I headlamped it for 20mins or so. 42° at start. Ditched the jacket after a mile. Cruised on up Barnhardt and checked on the falls. Barely a trickle. The clouds stole the show along the divide. It added to the already excellent views. Passed a couple of backpackers also going down Y Bar, that was it for human contact. Overcast had seized the day, and spared me from the the usual sun exposure on this trail. The TH was full upon my return. I noticed dark skies had taken over and the tops of the peaks, including Mt Ord, were hidden under clouds, as I departed. Enjoyed this loop, as always. Great morning in the Mazzies.

Joined a group of 4 on this one. I'd never done this loop before. We traveled clockwise. Peralta was a zoo. Trails were quiet after that, just the occasional backpacker. I enjoyed Terrapin Trail the most. Fun going over the little passes. Weather stayed perfect all day. Saw one cardinal, no other wildlife. No water other than a few pools and even a light trickle in Bark's. That's an improvement from 2 weeks ago. Trails are in great shape and easy to follow.

Made a quick a.m. trip to the non-existent falls. The only falling water was coming from the sky. We early birds had the trail to ourselves until the last mile on the return. The rainy Supes and cloud show was the entertainment. Nice little walk in the desert.

Left work a little early and got my feet on SoMo in the rain. Saw one couple on Guadalupe and one mountain biker. Otherwise empty trails. Watched a pack of coyotes on the prowl. Nice to be out in the drizzle. Felt good to take off wet clothes and get into a dry vehcile at the end.

Great weather for a night hike. Cool and breezy. No rain, but decent cloud cover. The low level clouds carried enough city glow onto the trails, no headlamp needed.

DallinW
A little weekend R&R at the 'hikers playground' with Dallin and a crew of adventurers. We headed into the canyon on Saturday a.m. Varying abilities made the journey a little more tedious. Visited the first falls for lunch and swimming, before heading downstream to the grotto area for camp and further shenanigans. Cliff jumping was the afternoon/evening entertainment. A good time was had by all. Myself, Dallin and Savannah got up Sunday a.m. and were the first to depart. Dallin went ahead of us and found a climb route directly out of the canyon. This shaved off a good amount of time from our trek back to the vehicles. Beautiful area, indeed.

Out of work a little early so I squeezed in a few extra miles. Solid loop. I like that far west end where National starts to climb. Very dark back there. Saw some spiders, centipedes and scorpions on the trail. Warm night. Shorts and tank top throughout.

Short workout hike this evening. Some of us had to sweat out some of the weekend's sins. That would be Dallin. Perfect hiking temps at night. Yet nobody else on the trails.

Some morning exercise to keep the momentum. Plenty of folks on San Gabriel, HV and Ridgeline. Had Guadalupe to myself. Traveled all the way West to National. East on National. Under the bridge and through the wash to the stone buildings. Ridgeline to Beverly and back onto Guadalupe. Sunny but pleasant a.m. on the hills. Still hazy to the East.

Clockwise loop from Peralta. I actually parked at Lost Gold Mine TH. Headed up Bluff Springs, passed a handful of backpackers on the way. Ran into a group camp near LaBarge Spring, which was flowing. Crossed paths with a solo backpacker who informed about water at Reed's Windmill. Dripping Spring was indeed dripping. From there, I shared the trail with a bunch of cattle for a half mile. At the fence they started to panic and tried to force their way through. I backed off and approched from the side, which flushed them off-trail so I could pass through the gate. A few nasty pools in Red Tanks Canyon. Not much water out there, as expected. Tread isn't the best. Rocky and loose in spots, especially the downhills. There were stretches of Red Tanks Trail that were very clear, and some parts were scratchy. Easy to follow, though. Felt like the entire hike was sun exposed. Every morsel of shade was appreciated. Personally, I wouldn't do this loop on any day much warmer than what I saw today. Fun hike, though. Great geology. Saw a bunch of lizards and a few cardinals. Not much else for wildlife.

Dallin put this route together despite having not hiked a 20-mile day in over 3 months. He sent me the route and I was in. We started up San Gabriel before sunrise. West on Guadalupe to National and down the wash between the Coronas. Fun boulder hopping, scenic wash. Took Corona de Loma back up to National. Down Telegraph, road walk to Gila and back up on Pyramid. Took Lost Mine down and Lost Ranch Ruins up. Cruised on National to San Juan lookout for lunch and over an hour long break. Then up Alta to Maricopa Peak and back down. Plans of Lomitas/Holbert went out the window. We took Ranger back up to National. Mostly shaded, which was nice. We skipped Hidden Valley and stayed on National. Sunset brought us new life. Plenty of moonlight, so no headlamps needed. Took Ridgeline to Beverly and up F.U. Hill back onto Guadalupe for our return down San Gabriel. Long day but enjoyable. Perfect weather, strong breeze most of the day. Plenty of folks out on the trails during the first half, hardly a soul after.

Met a friend from Tucson and went for a stroll. I'd actually never set foot on this trail. Neither had she. Kinda busy heading up, but not bad. Had the summit to ourselves for a few. Nice and warm once near the bottom again.

Hit Flatiron on the way home from Picketpost. Started around 1245. I fought the masses as they made their way down. Which allowed me several short breathers. Then I reached the top and turned around to join them. Warm and sunny today. I'm not complaining, though.

Hit one of Dallin's exercise routes. Started from 43rd Pl and observed the new Pima Cyn TH as we climbed Marcos. Pretty fancy. Then West on Guadalupe and down into HV, East of Fat Man's Pass. We then took Mormon Loop to Ridgeline, where we passed a group of 15 or so on the highest hill. Finished on Pima Wash. No headlamps used tonight. Plenty of light pollution getting through.

I took up an offer from Dallin & crew and we met in Flagstaff Saturday evening, after an interesting drive up from the valley. I-17 became icy from 6000ft and up. The car in front of me and SUV beside me lost control and smashed into each other. I skated through untouched. They were just a part of the collection of vehicles that spun out and into the trees and ditches. A few inches of powder fell overnight. Roads to the park were icy, but doable. No roads in the park had been plowed, but no entry fee, no rangers (as far as we could tell), and the buses were running. 20 degrees as we started down SK. Windy day from the top of the canyon, to the bottom. Trail was snow and mud the entire way. We bolted down and lunched with some deer company in the campground before crossing the river and starting up BA. Dallin wasn't looking forward to the climb out, but we set a nice pace and didn't need to break or put jackets on. The hike out was over fairly quickly. The upper portion of BA was much more icy than SK. We didn't need traction help for either. Fun day in the canyon.

The original version of this loop. Up San Gabriel, west on Guadalupe, down just after Fat Man's Pass. Took the scramble route down the boulders. East in Hidden Valley. Onto Mormon Loop briefly, then Ridgeline. No headlamp the rest of the way. Beverly across and back up F.U. Hill onto Guadalupe for a return down SG.

Sunday exercise stroll. Changed up the route a little. Up San Gabriel, west on Guadalupe, east on National. Stayed until the wash that goes under the bridge. Then back up onto Guadalupe and down SG. Saw a few people on Guadalupe. A few more in HV. Generally a quiet morning on SoMo. Awesome breeze to accompany the sunshine. I'll hike this alternative more often.
