Good little Rim Country leg stretcher. I figured hitting Promontory would increase my chances of seeing snow. Started up Derrick and onto Promontory. The climb up was over quicky. The trail is in great shape and easier than ever to follow. Thin layers of snow clung to the shade. There was some snow on top of the butte, not nearly as much as there should be. A mere inches of crunchy snow blanketed the forest floor. It was a desolate road walk across the butte. My 'winter wonderland' for the day. Tread was snow, ice and frozen earth. Avoid the ice and you're fine. The short walk on Rim Rd was the same. The upper reaches of See Cyn was a little winter-like. That ended quickly. Trail was dry, no mud. Midway down it turns to a fall scene. Passed a couple of dog walkers as I cruised on down to the TH to jump on Highline. Ate my lunch as I made my way over to Horton. It was sunny and warm now. The 30 degree starting temp turned to 60. Stopped at the spring to grab a little water before making my dash back to the TH. Passed a couple families out for a stroll. Fantastic weather for an outing in Rim Country. Saw a dozen elk and a few deer.

Almost identical to the last loop I did from San Gabriel. Dallin was looking for a little exercise and joined in. It was a warm night on Guadalupe. A few pockets of cold air down in Hidden Valley. Saw a handful of coyotes and no other hikers.

Quick overnighter to Bear Spring before my weekend and Dallin's 9 month summer is over. We started early in the afternoon. The 2 hours of sleep in my car the night before felt fantastic on the climb up. Then I realized I forgot my sleeping pad. We got to camp at Bear Spring and immediately checked on the well. It was full. After dinner, we took a walk SoBo along the Divide before it got dark. We enjoyed a nice fire and I slept on some pine needles. Conduction wasn't that bad, despite a wet quilt from an overnight rain that was short lived. Fortunately, it was an unseasonably warm night and I slept well. In the a.m. we made an invigorating pre-dawn trip to the spring before tearing down and leaving. Cruised along the Divide and down Barnhardt. Both are in great shape. The wind along the AZT felt nice. Saw plenty of deer, but no people out until the last mile of Barnhardt. Good little getaway in the Mazzies.

First of a SoMo double dip this a.m. Up Lost Mine, still my favorite in the area. East on National with a trip up Goat Hill. Pyramid back to the TH, which was packed upon my return. Only saw a few people going up Pyramid. It was warm as soon as the sunshine arrived. Beautiful morning, though. It's nice to start a new year with a clear mind, focus and plenty of motivation. Life is good!

2nd workout hike of the a.m. Much warmer than the first. Amazing that it's January. Trails were empty, which allowed me to move quickly. Good exercise in the backyard.

Not my usual variation of this loop. Went up San Gabriel and West on Guadalupe Ridge. Decent sunset while up there. At the junction, I walked East on National. Beyond Fat Man's Pass, I took an off-trail route back up to Guadalupe and continued East, then back down San Gabriel. Great weather this evening. Warm enough for shorts and a t-shirt. Didn't see another soul after the initial trek up San Gabriel. Good little exercise in the hills.

Quick workout in the Supes. Surprisingly few people on the trail, so I thought. Plenty of folks on their up as we hiked down. Weather was perfect. Started with a light windbreaker, that only lasted a mile. Nice to get up to 5024/Flatiron and get in and out before the masses arrived.

Christmas evening exercise hike with Linda. Weather was great, shorts and t-shirt all night. We took Bursera up to National, a stop at Goat Hill, then back down on Pyramid. Not many people out on the trails, at all. The highlight of the night was the neverending sunset.

Good day for a desert peak. 36 degrees at the start. Overcast lingered throughout and a breeze picked up later in the a.m. So really nice, in other words. The trip up Ford Canyon was a treat, even with no water present. I also enjoyed the short ridge walk on the 'off-trail' section before the road walk on the summit. Terrain switches between rocky drainges, grasslands and saguaro fields. We enjoyed views of the western mountain ranges and a nutrition break up top. We cruised back down on Mesquite Cyn. In the lower reaches, we encountered a handful of friendly hikers out enjoying the trails.

I'd never set foot on these trails before this trip, but a couple of desert peaks sounded good. Chilly start at sunrise for my underdressed self. I was the only one wearing shorts today, unfortunately. We made our way along Walkin' Jim, crossed paths with a few burros and started up 3465. Nice trail and easy to follow route to the summit. The views were better than I anticipated. Rugged peaks and colorful geology in all directions. The lake actually looks pleasant from up here. We soaked it all in during brunch. Once back in the flatlands, the off-trail fun began. We climbed a hill and eyeballed a route onto the ridge. We picked a winner. It was much easier than it looked from that hill. We strolled along the ridgeline over to Pike's, then back West along the ridge over to Mill. Both were worthy destinations. Mill was fun and required navigating through a steep, loose cholla field, then a narrow, rocky 'mini ridge' just before the top. Heading back down, I spotted the 'adventurous route' for the day and opted for new scenery, instead of returning the way we arrived, and convinced Linda to follow. The descent we ended up with was steep and loose, but complaining was kept to a minimum. We arrived at the drainage safely and followed it back to the trail to finish out the loop. Weather stayed perfect all day and we didn't encounter a single hiker throughout. I found this place to be surprisingly scnenic. Add some off-trail fun and it makes for a great day.

This seemed like the first good weekend for a ridgeline hike, so we gave it a go. Started from Crosscut at sunrise after setting up the shuttle vehicle. A young man followed us up Siphon Draw on his way to Flatiron for the first time. We parted ways after the wall and headed up 5024 after a brief meeting with syoung. Once on the ridgeline, we wouldn't see anyone else all day. Walking the ridge was scenic and pretty straight forward. Lots of cairns and an obvious use path. Skies were as clear as we'd seen in recent weeks and views were great. Once in full sun, the cold wind was enjoyable and balanced the warm sunshine perfectly. After 11am, I was in shorts and a tank top all day, in December. We had lunch before the uphill to 5057 and a short break once on the summit. The hoodoos sure are fascinating. We then dropped back to the ridgeline and over to Robber's Roost, where it was cool and nicely shaded. Continued on to Freemont Saddle and took Cave Trail down. After a short road walk, we were back at the vehicle. This was a fun one! All day ridge walking, excellent views, hoodoos, peaks and seclusion in the Western Supes. Great day.

A fun little night hike in the hills. We went up Lost Mine, a favorite of mine, it gets to the point. Upon reaching Goat Hill, we felt the first few drops of rain. A light drizzle ensued, and intensified as we headed back on Pyramid. The rain and cool temps were pleasant. The lightning filled sky was a surprise. Kept our pace at a good rate. A large, bright moon added to the scenery as we watched the valley end it's rain-free streak.

This was a new trail for me. Linda and I started around 8am. Nice and cool in the shade, but short-lived. Most of the hike is spent in the saguaro forest. We were surprised by how green the vegetation was. Seemes like a healthy desert. Very scenic. The trail itself is rocky and loose. We watched a fox run through the pricky pear field up top, before reaching the high point and finding a spot for an extended nutrition break. A bit hazy, but views in all directions were good. We passed a group of hikers on our way down, but didn't see anyone else all day. It didn't seem to get too warm out. Turned out to be a good one. My kind of desert.

Hit the hills with Almal at about 630am. We walked up San Gabriel to Guadalupe Ridge. West on Guadalupe. The cloudy sunrise was nice. It started sprinkling on us as we traveled along Guadalupe. Eventually we dropped down into the valley just before Fat Man's Pass and started back to the east. Light sprinkles and a breeze picked up as we went into the wash from Hidden Valley. Under the natural bridge and down a few dry falls, we followed the wash to Ridgeline. On Ridgeline, we were eventually hit by the light wall of dust that came from the south, just after the clouds moved through. We then took Beverly back to F.U. Hill, then back up to Guadalupe and down San Gabriel. Good little exercise loop and nice to catch up with Al. The weather was an unexpected treat. Perfect morning to be outside.
