I really enjoyed this hike despite it being a bit warm out. We would've hiked to the peak but didn't quite have enough time; I will definitely be back to do that. Someone convinced me to hike off-trail going back down, which I wasn't a fan of. The only redemption was that it did enable us to see a small amount of water coming out of the rocks and a small stagnant pool in the wash area.

Loop hike starting with Mt. Elden Lookout after being hailed-out over the weekend and deciding to turn around. Heart Trail was probably my favorite part. I saw 3 turkey vultures (?) sitting atop a high rock right at the beginning of this section and one bicycle rider carrying his bike up. There were tons of wildflowers in both the Sunset portion and the Heart portion. I probably startled about 15 - 20 deer in different locations beginning at the intersection for the Sandy Seep Trail. Heart to Sandy Seep to Christmas Tree was not well-marked, as the rest was, but I had no problems figuring out how to stay on the loop I wanted.

Just wanted to update others on permits, since we ran into a couple issues. We went to Sportman's Warehouse in Mesa to purchase permits, as we decided somewhat last minute that this was going to be the destination. They informed us that their machine had broken back in September, and it had been picked up to get fixed and never returned. The lady told us we could get permits closer to the destination, which I assumed meant the Globe area. Quickly Googled Black/Salt River Special Use Permits to find an alternate location and several convenience stores/gas stations were listed. We picked up what we thought were the correct permits (they were called Black/Salt River Special Use Permits) from Express Stop in Globe and ended up paying $25 each. However, I realized when we returned home that they were for the adjacent San Carlos Reservation. I am guessing we had the wrong permits, so I am glad we didn't get stopped anywhere. I would definitely recommend just purchasing online from the White Mountain Apache website.

Knowing it would be busy, we left early, but not early enough. The past couple years I hadn't had any issues with this side being full. However, the parking lot was full, so we decided to park on the side of the road and walk the extra 1.5 - 2 miles in to the trailhead. We were able to talk to a couple rangers and a couple people from Search & Rescue about what future plans were for the area. The first ranger that was "patrolling" the side of the road said that no permit system would be implemented this year, as there was a new Forest Service director who did not want to limit access and wanted alternatives to a permit system considered, as well as allowing for public comment and input. The second group of people manning the table and advising people what sort of hike they were getting into (13 miles with the added road length) also discussed a proposed permit system with us, after we made it clear we were very prepared and going to continue on. It was a gentleman from Search & Rescue, so I don't know what sort of input they get. However, he said there were two basic proposals - an $8 permit that would restrict access to a certain number of people per day or a $25 permit that would do the same thing, but also help improve facilities at the trailhead. Not sure what is going to happen, but he said he was happy to get input from the public to pass on.
