We started at the campground and walked a couple miles and took the Lake Mountain Lookout trail. The lookout was definitely the highlight. The employee in the fire lookout was very friendly, shared lots of information, and even read us some of his poetry :) We decided just to head out after that, as it was getting a little late. I didn't want to make any more critical mistakes driving back to Phoenix, like I did on the way there (I tried to drive off from the gas station in Show Low with the gas pump hose still in my car  ).

Beautiful weekend for West Clear Creek. We hiked in about a mile and a half downstream from where Maxwell Trail "ends". We saw one other group as we parked at the trailhead, but they must have gone the other way, as we didn't see anyone else the whole trip. Relaxing, fun weekend. Lots of slipping on the rocks in the creek, but a good time was had by all.

Took Sterling Pass over to Vultee Arch - made it out of Sedona before the chaos of Memorial Day weekend and lots of other closures in Arizona ensued.

We shuttled up to the North Rim with a group and began our hike at 5 am on Saturday. It was incredibly busy! We tried to keep up a fast pace through to Ribbon Falls, just to get some space between all the crowds. Ribbon Falls was spectacular and spent quite a bit of time here, relaxing, taking photos, and snacking. Quite a few groups started arriving after that, so we packed up and hit the trail again. I loved the stretch from Ribbon Falls to Phantom Ranch. It was beautiful and a nice break from all the 'down' on North Kaibab. We hit Phantom Ranch about 11:30 and rested for awhile before the trek out. From Phantom Ranch, across the bridge and beginning up Bright Angel about to where the trail hits the creek was the hardest, hottest section for me. We frequently got our hats and clothes wet as we could. We finally started getting a bit of shade on the corkscrew heading up, making the rest of the hike out much, much easier. I exited Bright Angel Trail about 5:30 pm, so I just made it within my personal goal of 13 hours. Amazing experience!

Hiked in on the Fossil Springs Trail and were the first people at the dam. Hung out for a few minutes before heading up and back down the Flume Trail to the other side. Flume Trail was very exposed and a little harder than I was expecting. Soaked our feet in Fossil Creek and found a javelina(?) skull before we left to head back. Luckily it was partially overcast, so the heat was more tolerable on the way. We were happy to be able to refill our water at the springs before heading out.

I wanted to get this backpack in before it got too hot out. We left late Friday night to avoid the crowds walking on the road in and probably hiked in about 2 miles before we set up camp. Saturday we hiked over to the "waterfall" which was still pretty cool despite being dry with lots of very dirty water at the bottom. Hiked out early Sunday am to avoid crowds again. This was a nice, easy backpacking trip. We saw a couple small pools of water, but nothing I would feel comfortable drinking even after filtering. The cleanest one was probably just before the intersection with HS Canyon.

Perfect weather for one of my favorite trails and some solid elevation training for Rim to Rim. Hoping to come back and loop it with the Super Trail eventually. Lots more people at the summit than I have ever seen.

We went up Houston Brothers, over to U-Bar and back across Barbershop. There was a lot of criss-crossing with old roads on U-Bar, so we got off-track a few times and had to backtrack to locate the trail. We only saw a few other folks the whole time. One was a group with an off-leash, advancing, aggressive dog. Not sure why they made little effort to grab the dog or call it back and instead let their other dog off-leash too after they saw us. It ended without incident, and I don't have dogs, so I don't know what proper etiquette is but I am pretty sure it isn't that. :-k I would possibly do the loop counter-clockwise next time, as the Houston Brothers section was the easiest and I would have preferred to end with that.

Joined a group to hike out to the old mine/swingset in the Mazatzals. It was a pretty incredible feeling swinging out looking at those views. Swingset is in really good shape too.

We saw one backpacker the way in. We made it down to the creek/end of where you could hike without getting in and I waded a bit downstream, but I don't think I made it to the official Hell's Hole. Water was a bit cold and I promised to turn back after about 15 minutes for my hiking partners that were waiting. There were several dogs barking in the canyon on the descent to the creek and back out. We saw the owner on the way out. I guess he just sets them loose to track animals and then either goes and retrieves them or calls them back with the GPS tracker. They must have had something trapped because they barked nonstop for several hours while we were there.

Trail was pretty busy but it seemed no one wanted to make the last climb over the rocks to the falls, so we had it mostly to ourselves.
