With snowmelt conditions at prime and great weather I finally made the venture to a spot I’ve been scouting out for many years now along the borderlands of the Hellsgate Wilderness.
During part of my usual surveying I saw what appeared to be a plausible area for ruins and upon arrival I wasn’t seeing much until coming across a truly impressive and unexpected petroglyph site.
The “ruins” were meant to be rather a quick stop rather than a destination as my intent was for canyons and falling water but the surprise was well worth the change of plans.
I hiked out further and peered down into the normally dry jagged desert canyons lined with saguaros roaring with water and it was hard not to go down to see the show but that will be a whole other trip of it’s own in the near future...

Nice little return to this cool place under suberb snowmelt conditions just like my prior visits.
Took a completely different route than before and climbed around some nearby hilltops out of curiosity.
Percussion flakes and worked stone everywhere above the canyon/creek showing life was abound just like many others areas I’ve been to lately.
Missed quite a few petroglyphs at the main site and scattered throughout the canyon I missed last visit and I’m sure Beth and I were not the first to notice but after examining petros practically on the ground and others literally underneath giant fallen rocks it certainly appears this site used to be under a prominent overhang that collapsed over time which explains the now odd present day location for such an impressive display of art.

Turkey Hills and Pueblo on Turkey Day how ever so fitting to make rooom for a meal by parading around this neat little area.
The ruins are are very interesting as the location just seems defenseless in every way possible as it is truly just a flat spot among the open pines.
I did come across a couple other possible ruin sites on small lava rock hilltops as there were some leftover rock lines, visible old pits and a high concentration of pottery sherds.
Hiked up to the northern hilltop which boasted phenomenal views of Flagstaff, Doney Park, Mt. Elden and “The Peaks” which were blanketed under the clouds of a brewing snowstorm.
Between being great Mule Deer country and the many leftover signs of the ancients as usual I could find myself putting in some miles out here given the next opportunity.

Solid day exploring the always magical and mystical Mazatzals under the prime conditions when they seem to truly shine.
Light sprinkling during the morning start which soon commenced, then turned into actual rain for awhile and shorty after the cell was done the remainder of the hike.
I wandered up some random benches and mesas out of curiosity and was truly amazed and surprised on the encounter of remnants of the ancients even though I should know better by now as evidence is all over this great state or all over the world for that matter.
There will be water flowing for awhile in the big north to south paralleling canyons on the eastern side of the range as they all filled up nicely and are currently still getting a little light winter storm love.

Another nice quiet hike into the hinterlands of Pine enjoying the solitude and scenery.
Countless reliable unmarked tanks all throughout the area but desirable drinking water is a whole other ball game and down in the big nearby canyons are your best bet.
I could explore endlessly out in this area as plentiful signs of ancients and animals are abound when viewing the ground which always makes it hard to turn around. ;)

Finally made the trip out to this epic spot that has been on the back burner for years now.
From the size, location and unique elements this place truly is a sacred and special site that left me in complete awe and amazement.
Still want to link up with @Alston_Neal to check out some of the other places of ancient habitation he has scoped out in the area as they are plentiful throughout this special land.

Solid little solo adventure roaming a new slice of the seemingly endless amounts of sacred and special land out here in the Mighty Mazatzals and the surrounding area.
Just above the start of a solid canyon I came across a site heavily concentrated with worked stone and remnants of ancient civilizations.
No clear sign of ruins encountered however after reviewing satellite imagery of the spot afterwards I think I may be on to something but the only way to find out for sure is to put some boots on the ground.
Great day with my pups and perfect weather in quiet peaceful country.

Was in the area and wanted to do some wandering in @Hansenaz land that I found intriguing after reading many of his informative triplogs of the area.
We started near Red House, wandered around from there and then made our way to the nearest “Ruin” marked on topo maps while finding many other smaller sites along the way.
Weather was great but dare I say a tad warm with no shade and the cinders made for a little extra effort during uphill travel but overall certainly an area I can find myself enjoying and exploring endlessly.

Harvesting firewood the legal and ethical way these days is gritty hardwork that involves serious persistence and energy.
It’s tough to find good solid hardwood near roads or anywhere with ease of access as anything within sight has almost always been cut even it was years ago.
All of the wood I found and cut was truly and literally hiked back to the truck usually up, over and around some kind of obstacle filled terrain for considerable distance, the few times I had a tree in close proximity to the vehicle made me feel quite spoiled.
Hammering wedges, felling trees and working late deep in the Arizona backcountry until sundown certainly makes me love and appreciate this great state even more.

Sincerely,

Mountain Matt the “Modern Day Mountain Man”.

Halloween at the Hot Springs! :pk:
Was helping a friend drop off supplies to a camper at Child’s and decided to finally make the stroll to the springs while in the area.
River crossing couldn’t have been better as water was low, clear and barely went up to my knees quite the contrast from what I’ve seen in others adventures.
Springs were nice, only a few friendly people, hung out for a bit and made the easy marked trail walk out.

A great overnight getaway with Mr. Wilderness and our trusty adventure pups to one of my favorite areas catching it in the near height of its Autumn glory.
Sunny warm days and calm cool consistent nights have temperatures and colors at near perfection with healthy oaks, vibrant maples and everything in between looking great.
Felt good to get “lost” behind the tripod again as lately I’ve been constantly working and moving so much in the backcountry and not soaking and absorbing it all in and photography has always been that outlet for me.

Little morning stroll hitting the many big and small feeder draws and drainages that lead into Wilbur and Bear Canyon along with some meandering in between.
Saw a large rafter of turkeys, a couple coues doe’s and one large lone bull elk.
Encountered signs of the ancients in the juniper flatlands which is the theme with many areas around the rim of this mighty sacred canyon.
I could walk for days, years and a lifetime out here and will probably continue to do just that.

Prominent rebuilt hilltop ruins in the town of Pine with awesome views of the canyon valley.
With many other sites of ancient life encountered nearby throughout recent years adventures it was great to finally see one of the plausible living spaces in the area although I do know there is more than just this one...
Truly perfect weather in Rim Country this whole month of October, superb hiking conditions.

Little afternoon stroll exploring the western edge from the high point 7337’ down to the southern tip with some cross country travel in between.
Awesome views, diverse landscape are all to be encountered with a creative route.
A nearby prescribed burn created an epic inversion effect in the valley and town of Pine which was truly spectacular to witness from up above.
Still a couple things to mark off the checklist for MRP as I believe there is still some unique stuff up there to be seen.

A little roam exploring the wide expanse of land that makes up Nash Point.
Endless spectacular views and scenic vistas to be found especially on the north and west side of the formation.
A haven for wildlife of all kinds as it is a perfect transition zone that boasts everything an animal could need or want.
Once in the heat of certain areas you can find yourself consumed by a dense forest of giant towering Manzanita so thick minor detouring is a must.
Enjoyable area from the pine forest up top to the open juniper grassland on the red rock edges.

My legendary neighbor shared another entertaining story of his travels spanning of over fifty years of living, hunting and adventuring the expansive land of Rim Country and beyond.
Weather could not have been better as we descended down into the beast of the canyon eventually finding some perennial water and other spots of “Refuge in the Rough”.
The country is vast, the views are spectacular and the history is rich in this canyon as there has been many occupants from the ancients to the cowboys.
As always I’m humbled and amazed by any archaeological sites but these particular ruins we’re truly marvelous and had some of the best views I’ve seen from a dwelling.
I’ve racked up well over a hundred miles roaming specifc areas of this mighty wilderness in recent years but as with many places in Arizona it feels like the surface has yet to have been scratched.
So many questions to be answered and so much land still to see...

Nice little getaway to a familiar place with some good people for some foliage gazing.
Just a nice and easy mellow draw and ridge walking making for a short enjoyable loop.
I enjoy exploring the high country of the Mogollon Rim anytime of year but there really is something magical about the endless amounts of intermingling maples, oaks and aspens in their colorful Autumn glory.

Nice little afternoon stroll around the Tramway TH area.
Once in the deep shaded side canyons I saw an abundance of fresh bear sign and soon enough heard a crash in the trees and saw mama bear and cub running up the slope.
A great sight to see as I’ve only had two bear encounters this year versus the five or six sightings last year.
All sorts of game activity and trails, some of which I know lead to the bottom of WCC as there are so many little hidden pockets throughout the area I enjoy exploring.
Absolutely perfect hiking weather lately around this elevation, warm and sunny days with cool crisp mornings and evenings.

Listening to my legendary neighbors many epic old time stories, he told me about a metal ladder propped against a cliff wall he spotted with his binoculars, there was never any confirmation of living accommodations sighted but the information shared was enough to inspire a trip down into the belly of the beast.
Started on a peninsula of Nash Point and worked our way down the ridge making decent progress until hitting absolute relentless amounts of old growth manzanita and shrub live oak but this was expected so we powered through it to the next level.
I wanted to stay out of the side canyons and drainages as much as possible as I’m aware how nasty they can be out here but after completing the majority of the descent we took a small drainage the rest of the way that worked out as a great passageway which was also freshly used by a big bear.
We came directly into a nice mile stretch of upper Fossil that had solid clear flowing water and pools but other than that the majority of it was dry but did have plenty of intermittent pools to be found.
Never made it to our target area after considerable time attempting to visually confirm a site with binoculars but as with the last time down here there was plenty of evidence of ancient civilization habitation to be encountered.
It wasn’t planned originally but during our rough descent I decided instead of heading back out that way came we would just work our way downstream and then head out the superhighway trail which worked out perfectly, topped off with getting picked up at the trailhead by a friend.
Started around 9am and finished around 8pm with sore bodies and satisfied spirits. : rambo :

Some northside rim exploring in a new section of a familiar area as between the flats, rim, draws, feeder drainages and main canyon there is just a lifetime of adventure to be found in and around WCC with a creative mind.
Found water, horns, bone and solitude in a truly beautiful and rugged little area.
No visible living wildlife during this outing but as usual at this time of year in the high country the bugles of bulls were heard during our return back to the truck which was just before dark.
