Awesome trip in the Superstitions today. I checked out the Eastern edge of the Ridgeline trail for a future complete trip.
Made stops at Robber's Roost, Fremont Saddle, Geronimo's Cave and Devil's Slide. Beautiful scenery and views abound!
The weather was cold and blustery, but made it down before any rain started. I love this hike and want to come back again! :y:

Living in Phoenix all my life, and staring at this mountain range as I drive by, and wondering, I finally made it here! I'm glad I did! It's a truly magnificent and awe-inspiring place. Close to busy Phoenix, yet so remote. Thanks to my friend with knowledge of the hike and a better vehicle than mine, this journey was able to happen. Thanks Cara and Sandy!
This trail reminds me of Piestawa/Squaw Peak on steroids, minus the crowds.
Not much in the way of wildlife today, except some big buzzards flying overhead. I've heard of bighorn sheep sightings here, didn't see any. Some wildflowers were present. The big show was the quartz rock littered all over the place. It was truly awesome! The summit was great, like nothing I've seen before. And the views of Phoenix were great too! Great hike! I'll be back!

Needed to climb this peak after years of staring at it out the window going down I-17. It was calling me.
I brought HAZ'er Cara, grabbed a permit, and we made our way out.
Parking at Deems Park is a good place to start, although some cars were parked at the dead-end of Stetson/51st Ave right by the canal. I wasn't sure that was allowed, but then again, what do I know? We did see some people hiking and biking near Pyramid. My partner asked if people had a permit to be out here. :o Funny. Not many people otherwise.
The terrain is similar to Scarlett Canyon just East of here, rocky like Camelback, just not crowded.
No trail to speak of, except the track on my phone. A bushwhack/climb the whole way up. A couple of false peaks and good/solid holds the whole way. Mind you, it took some time, but we made it to the top. The views were great all-around. There was a small metal box with a band-aid and pencil, but no paper to write on; no summit register. Surprised me there was an American flag standing tall and proud with some solar lights attached. Took the obvious selfie and made our descent very slowly. I'm glad I finally nailed this obscure peak! :y:

Great little hike in the Spur Cross area to check out some Native American ruins.
Beautiful day in the Cave Creek area; there's a lot more to explore out here, someday...
It's really nice out here!
Iv'e checked this one off the list, I'll come back one day and do the complete Skull Mesa route.
It's great that I live close to the park. I will be back!

Headed out to Tramonto today. I've never hiked this area before, but always wanted to. It's part of the Sonoran Preserve, I guess, but it's not really. Not yet anyways. I parked in the neighborhood park off Languid and Via Aguila accessed from 27th Dr. and Carefree Highway. Beautiful neighborhood and park; but there was nobody in the park or on the "trail". I guess this area is not well known except for a few hikers and neighborhood residents. I used Nightstalker's route as a guide. Thanks for that. Other than the very beginning and some on the ridges and peaks, there really is no trail. Route finding at it's finest! I made sure to visit all three peaks and each climb was harder than the one before it. You really need good balance and grippy shoes because there is so much loose granite like ball-bearings! The mountainsides were plenty green too! Not much wildlife or human life though! I was the only one out here all day. The constant gunshots from the nearby firing range and the traffic from the Carefree Highway were a little off-putting though. You wander a little too close to people's backyards at some parts which isn't fun. Will the city ever expand into this area a trail system like the Preserve further South? Only time will tell. :)

Went up Echo Canyon to Camelback today, since I had the day off and it was on the way home from dropping off family at the airport. Thinking it was going to be tough to park on a holiday at 9:30 am in the lot, I was pleasantly surprised to see the lot only half-full. I scored a spot right by the start of the trail. Sadly, this wasn't the case when I came down; Ranger had the lot closed and people were circling the neighborhood. ](*,) I soon remembered why this isn't my favorite trail.
There were lots of puddles and mud from yesterday's rain which made everything very slick adding to the challenge. And it was cold!!!
The views from the top were very nice, however, not so much smog. I must've just missed the Christmas tree and Santa. :( Oh well next year.
Happy New Year everyone! :y:

I decided to head to the McDowells today for some fun and distance training. The summer got me out of shape a little. :(
I have never completed the Bell/Wingate loop and so today was the day!
I like this loop, especially once you get away from the crowded Gateway portion; then you're pretty much alone. The views and the desert get prettier as well. I checked out some future hikes and summits along the way. A great day in the McDowells!

Great hike today with my friends at 3H. I had never hiked this mountain, but was always curious about it.
The cactus were out in full force and more than one person got stuck with needles today. I really like the views from the top as well as the climbing past the saddle. I tried to find the alternate way down and got stuck a couple of times, but made it ok. I want to check out the Southern tip of the mountain next time, as there's some cool crags to climb and little arches to check out.
Fun day!

Hiked to the top of Picacho Peak today! Great weather for this hike!
Not too hot and not much haze in the air; Great views!
Next time I think I'll try the Sunset Vista Trail or perhaps Newman Peak across the freeway.
I finally climbed this mountain after passing it so many times on the freeway! Nice Day! :)

Had the day off of work today so I went for a quick hike up Shaw Butte. A nice little workout in the middle of the week.
I plan on hiking Picacho this weekend and just checking all of my aches and pains aren't too much of a bother. I parked in the neighborhood off central and went up the road first before going down the backside of the mountain. Little bit easier that way.
Pretty soon the Christmas Palo Verde on the trail will be decorated with pretty ornaments just like last year. But it's not decorated just yet. They have a decorated tree on Lookout Mountain every year too! Happy hiking and Happy Thanksgiving! :)

My first time hiking in the Northern part of the Sonoran Preserve; I like it! I usually hike in the McDowell portion of the park, but I'm slowly recovering from a hurt ankle, and decided this was just the right speed for me. Nothing too difficult today, just some flat trails and a quick summit up Brown's Mountain. I was really impressed with all of the trails up here and how beautiful it was. The summit had great views of the entire valley and just the right amount of challenge. Not too crowded either once you get away from the trailhead. I may have to return here soon and try out my mountain bike. Great facilities as usual for Scottsdale parks. The bathrooms are wonderful and don't stink!
I'll have to check out the other trails in the area. :)

Beautiful day after a good rain, what better way to stretch the legs than hike in the Preserve!
I always wanted to climb the neighboring Northern peak of Squaw; (Squaw Peak's Sister or Piestawa's Pal?) today was the perfect day. I parked in the neighborhood and connected onto Perl Charles and then Freedom until I got to the wash and made it up a high saddle. Pretty steep but the soft, wet ground made everything so much easier. Then you climb the spine of the ridge (lots of crags) until you get to the sub-peak. Finally, made my way around a Palo Verde and up a nice slot to the summit! Nothing too scary but a couple of class 3-4 climbs with solid holds. I found an interesting ring of rocks at the top; no idea who put them there or why. Beautiful day and beautiful views abound! I could see from a distance the 50 or so people on Piestawa's summit and laughed! I did run into one other soul doing the whole ridgeline from where I was to the Squaw's Summit from the North Side.
I finished off my trip with a stop at the stone house near the neighborhood. Never been there before! Very interesting day!

Beautiful area and beautiful weather! I have always wanted to hike this mountain and finally got around to it!
Not too far from my house and trail was easy to access; although you must park in a neighborhood, just be responsible.
The hike goes along a jeep trail for a mile or two before heading up the mountain, a good way to warm up. The trail then loops around and then up the mountain. There, you find the summit and a pretty ridge to walk on as you visit a couple of other peaks. There is an American flag and some chairs on the other peak as well as a summit register. I met 3 friendly ladies up there who shared their snacks with me and a couple others who hiked up from their house in the neighborhood. Also a couple motorcycles trying to get to the top of the mountain. Couldn't do that in Phoenix!
I'll have to check out nearby Gavilan Peak someday. All in all, a great hike!

Decided to hit the North Phoenix Sonoran Preserve today. Previously, I have hike the loop and Dixie Mountain, but this time I also added in the Western Vista mountain trail as well. Good elevation change and distance for a warm morning in late September. This is a good park with great scenery and low crowds. I sat at the top to catch my breath and watched the hot-air balloons land a short distance away. A great hiking option in the North Valley! Just watch out for the cholla cactus fields up here! :o

In town for vacation and thought I would check out San Diego's popular hike. It reminded me of Shaw Butte and Squaw (Piestawa) Peak in Phoenix. Luckily I went on a weekday morning and avoided the crowds. Nice little hike to get the blood pumping and the views were great once at the top. I want to check out other hikes in the area next time I'm in town. Fun!

Good alternative to busier Squaw (Piestawa) Peak or Camelback. Pretty crowded at the parking lot, but not so much on the trail or the summit. Mostly Mtn. bikers this morning. I had no trouble making it to the top this morning even though it was 90 degrees and dew point of 64. You bring enough water and pace yourself and you're fine. Had the summit to myself as I sat there watching planes come in and hawks circle overhead. There's a good ridgeline you can walk while you're up here too! Good hike whatever you call it. Pk. 2429, Two-bit, Dixie. Good hike! :)

My summer of easy local hikes continues! Eastwing Mountain!
A good little trail not heavily trafficked. Seems to be a new neighborhood and park nearby; that's where you park. A short hike to the trailhead and you're off! There's good views of the Northwest Valley including: The CAP canal, Lake Pleasant area, Bradshaw Mountains, and all of Peoria. Nearby are Ludden, Westwing and Sunrise Mountain too! Deems and Pyramid to the East. All good hikes! A short mountain, but still good views. Not a hike I would waste my time on in cooler weather, but great for a quick workout in late July!
When it cools off, I will try and tackle Ludden and Pyramid Peak! :)

Parked in the North Mountain Visitor's Center and decided to do something different. Crossed under 7th St. and through the "Enchanted Forest" to continue along Trail 100. I could smell food from the restaurant and hear people splashing in the pool. Fancy Pointe Resort not more than 50 feet away.
The loop took me around a couple smaller hills and through many forks in the road. A popular place for MTB'rs for sure! As I cconcluded the loop hike, I decided to climb up Stony Mountain ( I think that's the name) and get a view of the resort and many other trails including the work being done on North Mountain. Good little hike I will put in my repertoire for future outings.
I think the group Trail Mix comes here every Wednesday or so. Nice! :)

My first trip on the Hackberry Springs Loop. I had a good time with this one!
I'm still very new to this side of the Superstitions and have a lot to explore yet. It's pretty good when you can do a hike like this in late May. I think it was pretty quiet due to the fact it's Memorial Weekend and most are out of town.
Following the map I downloaded, I decided to take the loop clockwise, so I hit the springs first and then back around Garden Valley. My mistake, it's harder this way as I got lost finding the trail after Hackberry. I wandered in the wash wondering where the trail was and bushwacked around a mile, only to find out that it was right above me the whole time! ](*,)
Looking back, it may be easier going the other way as it's easier to stay with a trail.
It's beautiful out here, i bet really pretty when it's not bone dry. No water and barely any color whatsoever. Still loved the hike!

A quick jaunt up the mountain to catch a sunset. Been up here many times but never a sunset. Beautiful.
Wasn't too busy either. The temperature was nice and a gentle breeze felt quite good. Wildlife was almost non-existent; except for a few bats and baby mice I encountered on my way down. Will have to do this again as it heats up. Night hikes are fun! :)
