Thought we would make a loop of the following trails:
1. Slates Trail
2. Military (? not sure about the name, this is on the east end of the loop
3. Flat Rock
4. Go John
5. Jasper

Not to many people until we hit the Go John trail. Not overly impressed with hike, I think the Go John trail was more interesting and had better views.

We decided to hit the Garden Valley starting out on the Weavers Needle overlook, then heading over to the Hackberry Spring, following the streambead south until it hit the Garden Valley loop, then continue on that hike through Garden Valley back onto the Hackberry Stream, then back to the Vista Overlook parking for a 8.5 mile hike.

Weather was nice and so was the hike, but we encountered a lot of folks hiking on the way back; probably about 6 groups.

Red Mountain - Capricorn Loop
------------------------------------------------------
We wanted to hike the east side of Red Mountain, so decided to make a loop of it with Red Mountain Rush being the scenic part of the hike (I do like Red Mountain, offers some great views). Starting at the NRA Pit Trailhead, we put together a loop with these trails:
1. Wild Horse
2. Red Mountain Rush
3. Goat Trail
4. Iron Goat Trail
5. NRA All Mountain Park 1 (Double Black Diamond)
6. Wild Horse to Trailhead.

It was close to a full moon so we decided to do this as a night hike to avoid bikes. Most of the trail was fine until we hit the NRA All Mountain Park 1 trail. This was very steep in a number of sections, Very difficult to go down and would be no fun going up (Not sure how anyone could ride a bike on this trail!) anyhow, If I were to do this again, I think I would exit the Iron Goat trail by taking the NRA All Mountain Park 4, it's only a single black Diamond, so probably better. I will not do this section again, and can't recommend it, so I won't be uploading the GPS route for this particular excursion.

Still, the night temperatures were perfect, and Red Mountain has some great night time views.

We decided to do a quick hike this morning starting from Needle Vista creating a figure 8 type loop that hit the Hackberry Spring loop as the eastern section of the figure 8.

This was a good hike, was lucky enough to get a real good photo of a bobcat at at the spring area. I think we startled it at first, but then it just casually walked away. What a wonderful animal.

Red Mountain - Gemini Loop
--------------------------------------

This was a loop hike utilizing the following trails:
1. Wild Horse Trail
2. Red Mountain Rush
3. Sunset Ridge
4. Twisted Sister
5. Back onto Wild Horse Trail

We initially wanted to do this in the opposite direction, but missed our turn off at the intersection of Twisted Sister to Sunset Ridge. This intersection is not marked, and can be missed if you are not careful. The intersection at the top of the mountain (Red Mountain Rush - Sunset Ridge) is marked. The problem is that Sunset Ridge is rated a double black diamond, so this section of the trial is best tackled going uphill, so I would recommend you doing the route in the opposite direction that we did, although doing it in the direction we did wasn't terrible, but was a little tricky in some places.

Generally a good trail, but same warnings as all the trails in this area, there are lots of bikes, so this loop is best tackled during a weekday when traffic is low, or done as a night hike.

I'll upload the gps trail, and reverse it so it shows you the direction you should head, it also includes intersection points so you don't miss your turn.

Clear skies. Though we would do this one again. Got a nice early start. Didn't run into anyone until near the end of the hike.

Trail is pretty easy to follow except for about 1/4 a mile on the back of the mountain, you are in a little valley in the streambed, so you know what direction you need to go, just the trail comes and goes for a while; probably due to flooding.

A pleasant hike.

We decided to hike in the Toms Thumb area, so created a 10 mile loop linking:
1. Toms Thumb Trail
2. Windgate Pass
3. East End Trail

We did a variation on this trail about 4 years ago, and decided to do it in reverse order this time (East End Trail being the last section before rejoining Toms Thumb). This seemed easier, Toms Thumb Trail goes on forever uphill :)

It was pretty enjoyable.

Trying to get a good loop to hit the Red Mountain Rush, was going to like the following for about a 10 mile loop:
1. RiverView
2. Mine
3. Sunset Ridge
4. Red Moutain Rush
5. Wild Horse

Unfortunatly, we seem to have missed out turn onto the Sunset Ridge, so ended up doing a loop at the base of Red Mountain:
1. RiverView
2. Mine
3. Twisted Sister
4. Big Sister

While all of these trails are frequented by bikes, didn't see anyone on RiverView, then met 3 different hikers on Mine, and no one on the Twisted Sister section we did until the intersection of Twisted Sister and Big Sister. Seems that the Twisted Sister to Big Sister loop is very popular for bikers, we have a half dozen bikers pass us on the Big Sister section.

Wouldn't recommend this hike. None the less, I will post this loop since this area is not documented well for hiking. Will have to try again for the loop on Red Mountain later.

Downloaded an alternate route to horse with no name loop. It started following a dirt road and then heads up the canon till it hits horse with no name. Best just to stick with the Horse with No name route, dirt road part wasn't particularly interesting.

Horse with no name is a nice hike with some great views.

We decided to do a Night Hike in the area since this area is so heavily utilized by bikers. I went to the Hawes Trailforks webpage
https://www.trailforks.com/region/hawes ... -111.66127

and put together a 9ish mile hike with the following segments:
1. Wild Horse
2. Red Mountain Rush
3. Sunset Ridge
4. Mine
5. Riverview

Got GPS coordinates for all of the intersections on my GPS and we headed out. Got there about 7pm and discovered I had forgotten the GPS. :(

I did have the trails written down along with a section of the map on paper, so I figured we would still be fine. Also had my Watch GPS to record my tracks, but didn't download the waypoints. Anyhow things went well up to Red Mountain Rush, but the intersections we came across on the mountain did NOT match what was on the website. Ended up going down on the wrong side of the mountain on High Ridge. Finally the wife put her foot down and we retraced our steps back the way we came.

Bummed out that we didn't get the loop done, but that Red Mountain Rush trail is something else(really cool). Views are great up there. We will have to go back and do the loop. I can see possibilities for about different loops between 8-13 miles(I'm guessing) that I would like to do.

I think hiking in this area during the day could be dangerous due to all the bikes, but a night hike is perfect since the trails are very easy to follow (except you need to get GPS coordinates of the intersections since some of the trails don't seem to match what's on the website).

Look forward to doing the loop hike next chance we get.

Wanted to do this hike for a while. I have done most of it for other hikes, but about 25% had not been hiked before. It was a nice trail with some great views. There were burn spots but things are recovering.

Thought we would do a loop in the Eastern section of the Skyline park. I expected the 2nd part of the hike to bump along the ridgeline before dropping in a wash to the car, but really, it just went up a couple of washes and followed some roads. Also, the track in the Lost Creek section seems a bit dated in one section where you should keep on the road leading up the canyon and you will reach the same saddle location.

We thought we would check out this area. It is certainly used heavily by mountain bikers. Got there a little early, and one car was there. Another couple of vehicles with bikes pulled in while we were waiting for dawn to break. Friday morning? Usually we will have the trail to ourselves this early on a weekday.

Our plan was to go down the Wild Horse trail, but as we were started we had three different bikers pass us. We thought the Twisted sister trail looked less used, so we backtracked a little to the intersection and went on that. Now we were winging it. Lucky enough we ran across a sign/map at the end of the Twisted Sister leg, and mapped out a balloon hike. The map did have a barcode you can scan for the latest mountain bike trails. I don't have a smart phone, but I took a photo, and when I got home it leads to this website:
https://www.trailforks.com/region/hawes ... -111.66429

All the latest updates are here, and It looks like we could have made this an actual loop if we were to hit the Mine trail followed by the Riverview trail. Riverview trail wasn't on the map on the trail, so we ended up retracing the Twisted Sister trail.

The trails here are extensively used by mountain bikers, ran into probably a dozen of bikers over the course of the hike. As stated in the Coon Bluff hike, this area looks to be a good night hike area; trails are easy to follow, so I think I'll wait until spring/summer to explore more in this area at night; not one I would recommend during the day, to many bikers.

We decided to to a quick hike. We hadn't been to this general area yet, so we decided to give it a try.
Got there pretty close to sunrise, but we could see this area is heavily utilized, were worried about running into other folks on the hike, but it turned out we didn't meet anyone on the trail, although the parking lot had lots of horse trailers when we got back.

For the most part the trail is relatively easy to follow, but I don't think the trail GPS track follows the existing trail at this point in sections. We just decided to follow the marked trail, and we eventually ended up at the parking lot at the east side of the mountain, Pretty much the most western section of the hike, We did see a faint trail heading south, which is the direction we needed to go to loop around the mountain, so we followed that. Lost the trail a couple of times (GPS maps shows there are no trails in this area). The off-trail hiking wasn't for too long, and the desert made for easy hiking. Eventually we came out of a wash and onto a ridge (as we were hiking in the south direction). The ridge had a trail heading East, so we jumped onto this, and although we did manage to get off the trail once(not sure how!) we re-located the trail pretty quickly. The trail becomes more and more prominent as you continue East until you hit another parking lot. From the parking lot the trail even gets bigger, so no missing that! Followed the trail east to the trailhead.

Overall it was an okay hike, but the general area is heavily utilized, and you can see the highway and recreation areas for a good percentage of the hike, so you don't really get the out-and-about feeling on this hike. I think this area may be a good prospect for some night hikes, Not locked gates at night, and it seems many of the trails should be easy to follow.

I'll post the GPS track if you want to follow it, you should be on a trail for about 90% of the time.

Did this 9.8 mile loop as a night hike back in June. Thought I would check it out during the day. Honestly, this is better as a night hike. Although it probably has some of the best views in the east side of the park, it's not really very interesting overall.

We started Friday morning pre-dawn, and encountered two hikers and one biker near the end of the hike.

I'll post the GPS route if anyone is interested in doing this as a loop.

Thought we would make another quick trip to the Goldfields. Decided we would try the Willow Springs Basin Loop (At least that is what it's called on the topo map in our GPS program. I'll upload the GPS track.

We got a little bit of a later star than normal (7:15am). Parking lot already had a number of cars. A bit worried about running into others on the hike, but turns out that we only saw two other people on the whole hike, pretty much at the end.

The first half of the hike is following a dirt road, then when it's time to start working your way back it is on a well defined horse trials.

A good ways down the dirt road we ran into a a pack of Javelina. Got a decent picture of a mom & baby.

All-In-All a nice hike, super easy to follow the road - then track.

We wanted a quick hike since it was Thanksgiving, and we wanted to get in and out before the crowds. This was a typical hike for this area. Nothing super special but still nice desert scenery.

We did initially get off onto the handy cap loop, and had to backtrack to the intended hike. Need to pay more attention to the signs! Map on GPS seems to be a bit outdated, and was focused on that instead of reading signs!

Me and the wife just finished the trail today(2021-11-21). Looks like John10s let the cat out of the bag before we completed the final touches. :)

I have emailed Joe & HAZ_hikebot on the process of updating the trail guide including description, and GPS route so expect that to be updated shortly The new trail is well defined with cairns, and some rocks lining the trail in some sections. I will include photos of various sections of the trail so you can get an idea of how it is marked.

The new official trail is almost 0.5 miles one way, so this is a short one, but it's a fantastic location for sunset/sunrise photos.
