"Summer Summits #4"
an awesome hike, for sure! started our weekend with 10 miles of MTB on local trails, then sunday began to climb and climb some more, but along a well balanced grade. if the walk up the big hill doesn't get to you, the descent will!
16.2 miles and 5884 AEG of great scenery. Pickles and i set out at 7:30 and passed maybe 7 people in 8 miles. the real treat however, was having the summit to ourselves!
clouds moved in around noon, we kept an eye on them. rain in the distance over dragoons and chiricahua. there was a chubby rock squirrel at the summit and i could swear he kept saying "alan! alan! alan..."
a trip back towards the trailhead tested the quads, and we finished the day with some sonoran fare and a good night's rest.

determined to bike some trails in the middle of the hottest day so far this year, we hit the Apache Wash loop, then continued on to Ocotillo trail at 4 pm with 114 hair dryer blowing, direct sun blasting degrees. perfect!
10 miles of riding the easy/moderate apache wash area in north phoenix, obviously the only ones out there. I was testing out my new front fork, new chainring size, and dialing in my tire pressures. Lesa (Pickles) and I finished with a well-deserved Whataburger and waffle-cone ice cream.

biked 17 mi on the roads out by browns ranch.. AFTER a 9 mile hike to W. Fork, and a 17 mi hike to Humphreys! my legs hate me.. haha

Another one that was on our list of summertime summits. Starting at the beautiful Lockett Meadow, walking through the Aspens was a really nice treat in short time. Trail doesn't mess around with elevation obviously, you have to get 4650 AEG finished in just eight miles. Pushing on we reached the service road and took that for a ways until the Inner Basin Trail heads up towards Weatherford. This is where the fun begins! Climbing, and more climbing. Pretty soon after several switchbacks you can see Humphreys peeking out over the horizon. It's still a couple of miles away, and it seems like no matter how much more you hike you don't get any closer! After passing Agassiz we made the descent down to the saddle which was filled with people. Looking up you could see the stream of army ants coming and going from the peak. That last section of Humphreys was really rocky, and a lot of little ankle twisters along the route... Getting up to the top was fairly enjoyable, and I imagine the other 40 people would have agreed. A quick lunch, and back down we went. Probably passed four to five people the entire way down to the service road, then at least 15, with one group sitting on a log awaiting the rescue team. We passed a sheriff's deputy, and I told him where she was waiting. Headed back down the hill without incident, and we were both glad it was over. A great hike, a good workout, and excellent views. I'm glad we got to scratch it off the list :-)
ran into @DixieFlyer on the way up, his group was making their way up to Fremont. nice to meet ya!

Took Pickles into the West Fork for her first time. We went about four and a half miles in, past the crowds, where the canyon really starts to shine. A great way to spend a Friday morning, with our goal of smashing Humphreys in the near future... was a great day, I think she really enjoyed it!

Lesa showed me a 3 min video from the u-tube where i could just barely make out the canyon for a brief couple of seconds. but based on the flora, the size and shape of the canyon, i was interested. i thought about it. Pickles then shared a couple still shots of the canyon, and i set out to locate the precise location, after a small clue.. so google maps to the rescue! searching around we were able to get a basic triangulation of the view that was taken from one of the dwellings, and i matched it on Maps, then decided what cliff it would be hiding in. we drove the old roads, parked at the top and walked 4 miles while following our desired path using Route Scout.. and lo and behold, after getting below the cliff and then scrambling around the outer flank, i saw the first of the dwellings. yelling back to her "i found them!" was hilarious, as i never heard so much joy and excitement!
spending some time in the great room, having a lunch and then finding some 'glyphs was a great day. not too many know of this one, and we are not privy to disclose, either.

started our summer of summits off with a good challenge! we had eyed Gorgonio since last year when we did cactus to clouds. the time was right to hit up this big 'ol peak and it really tested the legs after "warming up" with a 9.6 mile, 2600' trek up Tahquitz peak the prior day. fun summit, wonderful weather and GREAT company! Lesa (pickles) really charged up that hill, and i did my best to keep up.. what a perfect way to re-connect, re-evaluate, and re-examine our deep connection to nature, hiking, and each other. would not trade days like this for the world.. :DANCE:

this 9.3 mile round trip hike is fantastic! seems like a local favorite, as we passed about 15 people coming down on a thursday.
We were planning to do San Gorgonio the following day so this was a great warm-up hike to get us used to 8000 + feet elevation. Lots of interesting scenery and a few flowing seeps, interesting trees and formations kept us company until we got up to the fire tower at the peak where we had lunch and then headed back to the car. Was nice to visit Idyllwild again, it is such a quaint cool little town.

Lesa invited me to roll around on some beginner trails, and i couldn't say no! so we rode the mountain bikes out from the four peaks trailhead (the mcdowell mtn one, not the actual mazatzal range) for just under 13 miles. always a pleasure in her company, we went along the washes and took a connector trail across the basin to pick up the downhill ride home. this is a lot different than hiking, i might be a little sore tomorrow :o . definitely a new hobby that i'll squeeze into the schedule, it's so fun.. and with THIS company, a HUGE incentive to get back on the bike.. soon!
kinda warm out there, so saw no other riders. just the way we like it..
THANK YOU Pickles, today was just what i needed!

finally made it to the top, near the Thumb. first time, we went out and a freak windstorm pummeled us with hail, and we ducked out a couple hundred yards from the goal. second time, we went over to east end (shhh... ) so, third time's a charm. Lesa and I took a short break to cool off in the shade after a 110 degree hike up, and then boot scooted down to the car to get some Barro's pizza. a good, short workout!

took the kids to a (usually) quiet, serene spot that i've been about 4 times by foot, 2 times by kayak. the bridge over tonto was packed, as was the Horton t/h. traffic continued for 1/2 mile up the road. saw no others on the hike except a lone dude at the end near Knoll. on the water however, more ppl than i've ever seen. trout hit hard for a bit, i landed 7 on black rooster tail and 3 more got away. too bad there is a fire restriction! after 4 pm most went elsewhere but a few late day backpackers. quiet, cool night. tried to angle in the a.m. but only got wrist-exercise. a pleasant hike down the rim, passed a couple, then made it home to a cool swimming pool. life is good!

Back to the Mazzie's for the third weekend in a row! We wanted a short leisurely hike with good weather and a creek to cool off in and Deer Creek delivered! Just a 3-mile hike to this great little camping spot where we sunbathed, took naps in the shade and enjoyed a day of solitude. Funny thing, within 5 minutes of leaving the trailhead we were buzzed by a 2000 strong swarm of bees about 30 feet over our heads... And when we got to this little camping site discovered there was an old white oak with a beehive inside only about 15 feet off the trail. we didn't bother them, and they didn't bother us so that was good luck, I think. Decent stargazing, bellies full, and sleeping in hammocks is the te-wa family agenda :-)
Very relaxing and refreshing to have a stream in the desert.

goal was to get in about 25 miles, do part of the copper camp loop. got down to mcfarland canyon after 8.5 miles and ran into a few azt thru's. Bird had hiked from mexico (now at the 400 mile, halfway point) with only one pair of socks. i happened to have a nice pair of barely used Farm to Feet merinos, so i became a trail angel and gifted her my socks, to help her journey. E.T. was a fresh out of college long trail hopeful, and ate like a pubescent boy. so i gifted him some peanut M&M's and a MRE i dragged into camp. Dad Bod, who was my age trying to keep up with these whippersnappers, was prolly hungry too! so i gifted him a nice white bread salami, ham, bacon, cheese sando. all three were great to hang with. i wanted to push on, but got about 1/3 mile up the sheep camp trail and bailed back to mcfarland. it was pretty gnarly, overgrown. so i re-joined my azt friends and we set up a nice fire for the eve. two more thru's came by, one who had finished her CDT trek just recently, was determined to keep going. i guess a 15 mile day in the mazzies is weak sauce, for the pros. finally some scraggly looking character who was lagging, came running into camp wearing little huaraches, he is doing the entire 800 mile azt in these ridiculous sandals. (brings teva-joe to mind) and we all stayed the night in colder-than-expected temps, down to about 42. a good morning and high spirits had us hang for an hour, then part ways. i was to go home, they were to go north. another 400 miles north (if GC re-opens). also passed by Prince, Crop-Top, and Boomer on the way out. fun chatting with the thru's - i like their style. someday...

did the loop expecting an overnight at the tank. tank was gross. so by the time we got back to the flowing creek, it was about 1/2 mile from the car. kids elected to just drive home. a good day hike, training hike, with all packs full. which, combining all 3 of our overnight packs, is prolly still lighter than most typical backpacker's overnight kit. so now they're sitting 'round the backyard campfire eating ramen, in their hiking clothes, with a tent and all necessities in the backyard. camping WILL happen. and with their little dog, too.

Intended to make this a mountain bike / backpacking trek through a shallow canyon, so I rode my bike about 4 miles and stashed it amongst the bushes and proceeded to hike half a mile through a lightly overgrown canyon to the base of some cliffs below Dome mtn. where there is a seasonal waterfall. Unfortunately even though I carried all my overnight gear the only water I saw was a small puddle filled with mosquitoes. Decided to call it, returned to my bike and ride back down Bulldog Canyon to my car. It was a nice ride and saw a few jeeps and razors here and there but not too crowded. Tons of cars along the Bush Highway though. A nice little Nine Mile Excursion into the Goldfields, which never disappoint!

so get this, from Miles you walk a good bit until the fire damage. oak flat was spared. after that, the "easy to follow, well maintained" spencer spring trail becomes a faint, washed out mess. no worries, trust Wally! did not have much trouble navigating the path, although i cant for my kingdom figure out why there is a "teaser" hill just before the big climb. nothing in the creek requires a 200' gain, then drop, before you exit. huh. anyway, spencer is thrashed. top of the hill and on to the road to drop down into Rock. now, i've been known to get excited for off trail hikes in the E. supes, and this delivered. this upper section of Rock is about as useless as a "trail" as a third big toe. so carry on, try not to get killed via pushwhacking. once in the creek proper, it's easiest just to stay the course. get your Jordans on, cause you'll need Air to get over the approximatley 1,642 felled trees. i camped after the guesstimation of 9.25 miles from Kennedy ranch. above freezing, but not by much. so i anticipate a good 4.5 miles back to the car as "off trail" the whole way. after all, it was pretty slow going. then voila! a pink ribbon, a couple cairns here and there, and for the continuing 4 miles the trail was a breeze.. crossing the creek about a dozen times, but never hard to find. thank you to whomever has been out there with a saw! maybe they can carry on the length of the trail along the upper section where it needs maintenance the most.
spencer is a hell hole. it will take a dozen-strong crew for a month to make that one fun again. Rock, however, is a gem and just what i needed in the E supes. that's some dang nice country, there. NO MORE FIRES, PLEASE!

spent the valley's version of a "white christmas" over in the hiding secrets found in Turk's backyard! what a mystical, eerie sky held out for the first hour let loose a little on the final push up the canyon. so we stopped at a 250' long cascade in a perfect lunch spot and admired the scenery. someone packed a 12' aluminum ladder to (what appears to be) access a couple of caves up in the rock face. after spending a bit of time at the falls, hopped from side to side in the creekbed to make our way back to the car. spotted a familiar puppin' dog.. Blanco! chatted with friendofThundergod for a bit, then scarfed down a couple well deserved donuts before the drive home. always did like off trail, the rain and fog made it more interesting - but was glad to get home to a hot shower ;)

quick day hike into the last canyon left out of the several on the S. side of Supes Mountain we've hiked. this one is steep, par for course. and has 'glyphs! there's a scrambly route over towards monument that might take you to the ridgeline but not for us, not today. each of these canyons have similar personalities, but interesting, minute differences that make one want to see them all. of course, carney just being "there". Hog is cool. Hiero is really fun, Monument has wreckage (a must see) and the canyon "west of hog" is ok. Spirit, like Hiero, has a small panel of about 10 'glyphs. was nice to cross it off and actually made a terrific spot for lunch. there's a saddle with a reasonably flat camp spot about 2 miles in, with views all the way to DTPHX. would be a good chill spot to watch the city lights.

NOTE: even tho we parked on the asphalt where it stops, and dirt begins, we were greeted with a ridiculous note on the car that we were "trespassing" and next time they'd tow us. however, the signs that say "no trespassing" are actually posted on a RIGHT OF WAY that is owned by the county. so the neighbors out there are not very neighborly.. just a heads up.

paddled back to Blue Tank with an attempt to hike up into Hell's Hip pocket. too much water in Blue Tank!! there were chest high wades in the first narrow that we were not prepared for.. we had just a bit of rain two weeks prior, but man that stacked up high when forced into a 4' wide slot. anyway, turned around after the 5 mi paddle to ol' Blue, and stayed the night near the Point. looks like the FS took the metal canopy away, have no idea why they would. so now, there's no longer shade at the Point.

fyi, debris on the water from woodbury fire, lake level is good, but we saw one jet ski/sea doo that ruined the impeller full of bullrush/cattail reeds and he had to be towed out.
