My visitor from Texas wanted to do something with a little more bite than the Rim Trail at the Grand Canyon but not as much as say Rincon Peak so I choose the Bridal Wreath Falls Hike. This hike has a fair amount of AEG and the trail is in good condition and To top it all off it has an interesting destination. There was a good flow over the falls or maybe I should say a heavy trickle. On the return route I chose the new Carrillo Trail (I guess it's not new now) to the three Tanks Trail then returned on the Wild horse Trail.

The GPS route along the Carrillo trail did something funny so the track isn't quite correct. Don't know what happened but when I left the Douglas Spring Trail onto the Carrillo Trail it went off on its own. It shows me climbing some hill before making a correction putting me back on the trail. Gremlins I guess.

Took an evening hike/walk with friend Jenison to debrief about a tough week. The moon was almost full and looked quite nice behind the saguaros. We started at the parking lot, headed east on the Douglas Spring trail, then took a right on the stock trail to finally head north back to Speedway and back to the parking lot. No big deal. But it was nice, only a light jacket was needed. No animals to be seen. I need to do more of this. Start time was 1900 hours and it was dark.

Joel had to be on-call this weekend so he told me to do a hike that he didn't think I could complete. That was a challenge I just couldn't pass up.

We started out on the Wild Horse Trail in Saguaro National Park. Soon we found we were off trail in Wild Horse Canyon. It's a very beautiful canyon with a few problems that had to be worked or bypassed. We did a variety of both.

The vegetation was pretty aggressive...

We finally left the drainage and started to bushwhack for the peak. We head up steep hillsides, working our way around a couple cliff, and crawling through dense brush.

At one point, Amy screamed and pointed and we just couldn't comprehend what was wrong. Finally, we learned that at 6000 feet there was an Arizona Black Rattlesnake buzzing at us! January, 6000 feet, and with a patch of snow around the corner! Crazy reptile!

As we neared the peak things leveled out. However, the manzanita didn't get the message that they should be nice to us. I knew we were getting close to the trail and here I found myself crawling through manzanita with trucks the size of my thighs. They did not want to budget. If it had been an option, I think I would have sat and cried in defeat. However, that was not an option!

We finally found ourselves on top of Tanque Verde Peak at 2:15 PM. We had started hiking about 6:45 AM. What a long day! And we still had to get back to the trailhead and it was well over 10 miles away. We managed to get down in 4 hours! I do think that there will be 6 people who can barely walk tomorrow!

Another BK Special Hike starting at zero dark stooopid o'clock. 95 % of the elevation gain was done on the bushwacking segment of this hike. We started on the Wildhorse trail and then went up Wildhorse Canyon, when we left the canyon, it was steep, loose footing slopes, choked with manzanita, and shindaggers. We only finally got to the peak trail, just .3 miles below the summit.
It was warm, and pleasant on the peak; really would have liked to taken a little nap there. Then finally down a very welcomed trail back to the cars.

My first long hike back after my nasty 4 month long heel spur. Had it taped, and it did just fine, thankfully!

See Belinda's triplog, it says it all. What a crazy day! My arms looked like they went through the paper shredder after this day!

Thanks for leading Belinda, you are awesome to hike with :)

The waterfall was running a bit at Little Wild Horse tank.

From Speedway Trail head. Wildhorse Trail to Three Tanks Trail, Three Tanks to Carrillo Trail to The old abandon Bajada Vista Trail. Bajada Vista Trail to Wildhorse Trail and return to Douglas Spring Trail via the Converse Trail. These are excellent hikes for when you just want to get out for a short walk and don't want to drive too far (I live on East side of town). Not a recommended summer hike except in very early morning or late evening.

I had to spend the night in Tucson for work, so what better idea than to get in a good little hike? I did not have as much time as I hoped (i didn't get to the trailhead until 4:30) so this seemed like a good choice. All of the short trails right around the Douglas Springs trailhead are a bit confusing and overlapping, but certainly nothing too crazy. After I got about a mile in, I had the whole hike to myself and didn't see anyone else. Since we had some good rain (and even a little snow) the day before, i was hopeful to find some moisture at the falls, and I was not disappointed. There is a nice secluded grotto amongst some One-seed Junipers and Emory Oaks where there was a steady shower coming down from the falls. Great views of the Gaileyuro Mountains once I got a bit higher along the ridge. Well worth the trip!

This was our first hike of 2013! Decided to take a short drive to the Douglas Spring Trailhead and try out our new DSLR camera lense. The hike was an easy one as we wanted to ease our way back into it after not hiking for almost a year. Not much to see if you're used to looking at cacti, at least in the winter.

Took an evening hike to watch the sunset. Ended up staying out past dark and walking back with my headlamp.

When I was walking along the road to get back to my truck I encountered some spider marching along the road with near military precision. There were two groups of them: each about 2 feet long marching in perfect straight lines, headed due west. I have never seen anything like it before and the only thing I could think of was in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when Harry & Ron follow the spiders that are fleeing the castle to Aragog and learn that Slytherin's Monster is a Basalisk :scared: . And thats when I realized I have read Harry Potter too many times...

Headed out to SNP hoping I might get to run in the rain. It was raining when I left my house, but 10 minutes later as I arrived at the trailhead everything looked dry! Nice to not run in the sun, but it was very humid. Didn't see anyone else on the trail.
