Surprisingly, Daniela had never been to Squaw Peak before, so we got that taken care of today. Up to the summit first, then clockwise on the Circumference trail on the way back down. We made the loop a little bigger by going down Irregular Link then back up VOAZ. This was a good choice, since that part had the best flowers of the day. Finished up at 11:00. Fairly warm all morning, windy at the top.

Lots of flowers along Irregular Link, especially poppies; VOAZ had a lot too.

Had a nice hike with the entire family for a change today. My wife decided to come with the boys and I so we didn't try and tackle the summit as her hip has been bothering her. Managed to find parking right at the Summit Trail parking lot for a change which was a little surprising.

We made it about a 3/4 for a mile before the boys started complaining that they wanted to go home so I pushed them a little further and then we turned around. I love taking them out because they always complain and go slow until we turn around and then its smooth sailing all the way back to the car.

Little do they know, slowly but surely I will be increasing the distance on them.

Hit the Preserve for some exercise today. Parked at the 40th st trailhead as it's close to my house. I have done pretty much everything in this area, or so I thought. So it's fun to find new paths to travel. This whole route pretty much avoids the crowds at Piestawa, Dreamy Draw, and 2-Bit, so that's good for solitude. I tried to follow the official route as best I could, but still missed a few turns here and there. Hard to get lost out here, but easy to get confused  Fun little hike in the heart of the Preserve! :)

Enjoying the cooler temps, I took the harem on a loop through the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Starting at 40th Street south of Shea trailhead, we took the old road up to Two Bit summit. From there we followed a clockwise loop on LVYates, Perl Charles, Freedom, Irregular Link, and trail 100 back to the parking lot. Good times! Lots of other hikers, many with dogs.

Went back to this area to do a few more trails that I either haven't done in 15+ years, or haven't done at all. There is such a maze of unofficial trails here that I never really tried to keep track of hiking them all like I do with everywhere else I hike.

Started at the 40th St. trailhead and did and out and back on Trail 100, then did a loop down to 8B, up 302 and 304, and back to the trailhead via 1A and some unofficial trails. Got more elevation gain that I expected with the hills you have to climb over. the weather was a lot more comfortable that it was the last time I was here now that things are cooling off.

Morning hike. Got there around 6am and found only a few parking spots left. Luckily I was planning on doing the Freedom Loop and one of those parking spots happened to be at the cul de sac. Did the loop CCW. Was able to (slowly) jog the whole loop, excluding the Summit section. First time successfully accomplishing that...there are two climbs that have always got me walking in the past. This is a rough trail to jog. Very rocky throughout with some pretty steep inclines. Saw 18 on this part of the. Felt like I saw 1800 on the summit section. Conga lines in both directions with multiple bottlenecks. :? Amazing the amount of traffic this trail gets. Followed the lines up and down and then finished my jog on the Freedom trail back to the Cul de sac.

Decided to do something different this morning so up early and to Piestewa Peak. Started walking about quarter past five when there was barely enough light to figure out where I was going. Summitted Piestewa Peak with some friends, one of which placed a flag for 911. We stayed at the top for over 50 minutes before heading back down. On the way down, saw and talked to Joe for a quick hello - Yes, it is different that I wasn't at Deem Hills or the BCT. On the way down took the Circumference trail and when I got to the end of the road parking lot, I decided to find a couple of nearby geocaches so took the 8B and then the Mohave Ridgeline to the Peak. My legs where tired by then. Ugh.

I had really good weather today. It was very nice with a refreshing breeze on the Piestewa summit, then the circumference trail was mostly in the shade. It only started to get warm at the end climbing up to the Mojave Ridgeline and then back down.

Did a short, early, beat the heat, in-town hike this weekend. One of my favorite loops in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Most of the harem hadn't been on this loop before, so it was quite the treat. Ambulance was taking someone out when we got there at 5:20. Parking lots are under construction, cars parked everywhere along the entrance road. Trail stewards were doing maintenance on the east side trails. Humidity was up, we were soaked. Post hike treats at Snooze were excellent!

Technically, I've never hiked Piestewa Peak before. The last time I did, it was still Squaw Peak. And that was a solid 19 years ago. I think I've only ever hiked it once. Maybe twice, but I'm honestly not sure.

I figured the closest lot would be packed, so I decided to start from the Dreamy Draw area. It added some mileage as well, which I wanted. There are way too many trails in this area, and I always have a hard time figuring out which trail I'm on exactly. It took a little while to get to the Circumference Trail, mainly because I kept having to check Route Scout to see which was the best way to get there.

Once I got on the Circumference Trail, I headed counter clockwise to the junction of the summit trail. I wasn't really sure I wanted to try to do that trail today. For some reason when I got there, I felt good enough and started up. I think only two people passed me. I was able to stay ahead of many younger hikers and pass a few older ones. :y: Lots of hikers here routinely ignore the etiquette of "downhill yields to uphill", just like on Camelback. ](*,) I noticed that if you don't look up much on your way up, they tend to give you a bit more room : rambo : . I took a break by the one railing at the level spot to catch my breath and get a drink. Then, just before the final push, I had to take another break to rest my legs, which were starting to feel the burn. I did leg presses the day before, so I think tomorrow morning it's going to hurt trying to get out of bed.

At the top, everyone seemed to be on the lower peak. I got up there and noticed that the actual peak was over a bit. I made my way up there, just as much to get away from the crowd as be on the actual peak. Getting back to the trail required having to Honnold my way down a few dicey stretches due to taking a bad angle and having to move around other hikers.

Once back on the Circumference Trail, I kept on the counter clockwise loop and headed back to my car. Took the VOAZ up to Trail 100 to avoid more climbing over the higher saddle.

This is a really cool loop. Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, typically where you're not disliked, but damn I'm glad I changed the beat.

Rarely get out on this side of Perl Charles 1A. Realized WestWorld & Pinnacle Peak are clearly in view at prime points.

Yesterday was packed. Today maybe 50%. Bees & gnats are rolling full throttle. I'm sure they'll annoy me before the mercury destroys their life nurturing moisture. For now I have far greater anyances than bugs swarming my eyes, ears and nose.

Prehydrated as always. 2 frozen 12oz water bottles were perfect at 2.1mph, upper 80s, light breeze. Typically prefer laps as I'm not into carrying a pack on a hike under 12ish miles.

I just walked a mile to the park and Nikki drives right up and parks... lol

Rancid drift is strong on the west side of the circ which I noted a couple months ago too.

Down on Piestewa Basin Trail #1D, cool breeze. Everything is green, heaven esque.

A lot of people out in the Irregular Link vicinity. Far from crowded. Cool to see the rarely used gems getting attention.

Changing back to sandals realized this was my first hike without insoles. Forgot to put them back in yesterday after shaking out pebbles. Always wondered if the 1/16? inch thing was necessary. Probably, but I didn't notice a difference. Perhaps on rougher terrain the foot might slide around. Then again I like my Salomons for their tight yet comfortable fit.

Dismal compared to SoMo. Interesting as the north stretch of the circ was a great wildflower show back in the late 90's.

#1D is a gem. Backside of the circ is nice but #1D on the flip side swings lower so you get a larger mountain backdrop. Awesome little trench ascent on the NE end. Trail designers undoubtedly shake their heads. Luckily too far for 97.821% it's rugged natural cut is safe.

Always get a kick out of post-noon good morning greetings. Naturally attributed to my glowing personality that reminds folks of a fresh joyous day.
