The warm days and cool evenings of autumn embrace the Bay Area like an old friend, and this is my favorite time of year here. The A's and Giants are driving for the playoffs, 49ers fans are obnoxious, the Raiders still stink, and the hiking is perfect.
I started out at Castle Rock Regional Recreation Area on the Castle Rock Trail which turns into the Stage Road Trail when it enters Mount Diablo State Park, then up to the South Gate Road on the Barbecue Terrace Trail.
It looks like a lot of wildlife has made it through the obscene dryness of a California summer, even in this abnormally dry year. I saw 10 deer, a lot of birds, and even more lizards though they were very camera-shy. I guess the lizards that linger didn't make it.
Pine Creek was bone-dry, and I've never seen it like that, but I haven't been here in at least of year.

Mellow hike to recover from the trauma of moving. There weren't a lot of people despite the beautiful weather.

Took the Stage Road Trail, then climbed up to the top of Castle Rock. Yes, "climbed." Semi-bushwhacked to the Castle Rock Trail, and headed down to Burma Road Trail w/ a short stretch on Falcon Road Trail. Down to the Stage Road at Pine Pond.
The bird life is exploding across the Bay Area, and today exemplified this. Turkey vultures, red tail hawks, some sort of falcon, 2 flocks of turkey, the brilliant blue western scrubjay was everywhere if impossible to photograph, a hummingbird, red winged blackbirds, California quail, and some mallards all made appearances today. I even heard a bunch of owls towards the end of the hike. Wildflowers were disappointing today compared to last week @ Briones Reservoir. No poppies.

I noticed that I was #81 on the 2011 mileage list. No bueno. I'll submit a full description when the development I'm able. Today was very warm for this time of year, and the sky was brilliant. However, there was a lot of haze so long-distance photography was worthless.
Typical California oak savannah, and the open areas are basically rodent civilizations. I think they're California ground squirrels, and most fields in this area feature thousands of burrows. Consequently, this area has a lot of coyotes and raptors including red tail hawks, northern harriers. Lots of vultures as well. This area should feature a jaw-dropping spring wildflower display because of the incredible amount of rain we had in the early winter.
